Important Forklift Maintenance Tips
For your forklifts to keep operating reliably for years to come with minimum downtime, you need to keep the relevant forklift parts and spares at hand to quickly make the necessary repairs when they are required. However, even with good-quality forklift parts and spares at the ready, it is still essential to schedule full maintenance at the right intervals. When you buy forklifts with built-in diagnostics functionality, this can help to plan for maintenance and routine services to ensure that operations are not completely disrupted. But, let us take a look at how well-planned servicing and maintenance can reduce the cost of having to invest in forklift parts and spares.
Do not skimp on the quality of the forklift parts and spares. This is one area where you do not want to compromise. Only buy original parts and spares, as this will help to reduce the number of breakdowns and, most importantly, help prevent serious accidents because of parts failure.
Schedule the Maintenance Dates
Do not wait until breakdowns occur before you schedule maintenance. Every time a forklift is out of action because of a breakdown, it means productivity loss. Indeed, you may very well find that it breaks down at a crucial stage of operations. And because you did not plan for such an eventuality, you may not have the forklift parts and spares at hand to fix it there and then. This means having to get a replacement machine and waiting a few days before your most-used forklift is back on duty. Apart from breakdowns, consider how a lack of maintenance leads to inefficiency. Fuel or energy usage increases and you also face more safety risks. If the brake system fails or operates incorrectly, it can lead to serious accidents and injuries. It thus makes sense to schedule maintenance at the right intervals. At Ice Age Enterprises we stock original manufacturer forklift parts and spares, offer full servicing and maintenance, and sell top-quality forklifts that are energy efficient, are equipped with self-diagnostics systems, and are covered by service and maintenance plans. Operating a forklift is a demanding job, and the stresses of a busy materials handling operation can put strain on drivers. This doesn't only make them uncomfortable and prone to injury, but also makes them less efficient and productive, harming the operation's bottom line. Let's take a look at the main causes of strain and injury when working on a forklift in and around a warehouse or loading area.
The vibrations that the driver can experience when the forklift truck is driving can be hazardous. Vibration injuries can occur in the fingers, hands and arms of those who regularly work with vibrating tools, but forklift vibrations affect the whole body, and have been shown to cause lower back pain in seated drivers. Truck-related factors such as quality seat suspension and driving speed can help reduce vibrations, but the driving surface is one of the most important factors – rough and uneven floors cause the most vibrations, and negatively affect drivers and their productivity.
2. Constant movements
Research carried out has shown that forklift drivers turn their heads more than 1,000 times an hour during a shift, and make up to 2,000 arm movements in the same period. Over time, all this movement can take a toll on the body, especially if the forklift is poorly designed. A forklift truck which makes these movements as small and strain-free as possible will help reduce these risks.
3. Unnatural posture
Operating a forklift for long periods in a position that is not relaxed and natural can become difficult for the driver. Even reaching slightly forward with the left arm to reach the steering wheel on a reach truck for instance can quickly cause discomfort in the arm and shoulder.
The forklift truck’s design should allow the driver to operate it with a relaxed, neutral posture. Not only does this protect the driver, but prevents fatigue occurring during the shift, helping productivity stays high.
4. Poor visibility
Poor visibility from the driver’s seat can be problematic for two reasons. Firstly, it increases the risk of collisions and accidents. Research shows that a third of all forklift impact accidents occur when the truck is reversing – how many of these could be avoided if the driver had a better view all around the truck? Secondly, poor visibility forces the driver to move around in order to look around pillars, hydraulic hoses or the mast. As we know, this constant movement can lead to strain injuries over time, so it’s better to ensure that the driver can get a good view while also maintaining a neutral posture.
Fortunately, these physical challenges of logistics work can be made much easier with the help of ergonomic design — not only does it make the job much safer and more comfortable for drivers, but also increases overall productivity. Contact us today for more information on quality forklifts that are ergonomically well designed to ensure high levels of productivity for your operation as well maximum comfort for your drivers. Knowledge is power!
Proper forklift training can achieve things that every warehouse manager wants – increased safety, better employee satisfaction and retention, and heightened productivity, amongst many other things. However, good training comes at a price, and involves taking time out of the working day, so there’s often people in an organization who refuse to prioritise it. If you’re considering offering training to staff but are facing opposition, you probably hear some common arguments, like: "We can't afford it" : "It takes too much time out of the day" and
"We haven't had any accidents, so we're safe enough already". The following are some facts that dispel the aforementioned arguments:
1. Training and education has a cost, which can increase as you involve more staff. However, in exchange for this onetime upfront payment, you get well-trained drivers who are much less likely to cause damage, saving on repair and service costs for the forklifts, as well as the price of fixing damage to racks, buildings and other equipment.
2. Depending on the training, a course might take up two or more working days – which is obviously time that your staff aren’t working as normal. But as with the monetary cost, this is a one-off investment which you’ll claim back later, since well-trained forklift drivers can operate their forklifts faster and more effectively. Trained operators will increase their efficiency with training.
3. If there’s been no major incidents, it can be easy to get lazy and assume your operation is 100% safe. However, when this attitude appears, accidents start happening. Accidents involving heavy machinery can be life-changing and even fatal, and extremely expensive due to fines and insurance costs. Don’t wait until it’s too late!
We at Ice Age Enterprises offer quality forklift driver training for individuals and organisations at unbeatable prizes. Training can be conducted at our training facility or at customer site per request. Don’t hesitate to contact us today for a commitment free quotation! When purchasing a new forklift, it's tempting to get caught up comparing different options on the purchase price alone. However there are more options to consider such as forklift related costs, i.e. Service costs, response times from service provider and your forklift warrantee. It is also vital to consider operator related costs such as operator Safety, performance and functionality.
When you invest new machines, you can reasonably expect them to provide good, reliable operation for a number of years. During that time you own the trucks, they are costing you money - and in the end, this cost is much higher than the original purchase cost. In fact, it makes up a whole 90% of the truck's total cost of ownership over its lifetime.
By going to different suppliers, it's likely you'll find some differences in the purchase price. However, factors like the truck's reliability, performance, ergonomic and safety value and the supplier's service and spare parts operation will have a much bigger effect on your long term costs.
