ZIMTA President Mr Gundani...
Teachers' Regrading Exercise a Welcome Move !
‘Zimbabwe Teachers Association welcomes the government`s imitative of awarding teachers according to their level of education experience . This has been the union`s cry for over ten years together with other unions . The last job evaluation that was done was done in 2003 that is when the Patterson system was adopted ‘ Said Mr Richard Gundane during an interview .
`This is a positive development .This is what we have been asking from the government for the past ten years that educators` salaries and allowances must be placed according to their grades . The salaries were supposed to be commensurate with the grade one is placed in , the qualifications that a certain individual holds and also it should recognize experience . I think the government should resolve the issue of basic salary first so as to give meaning to salary grading to an extent that everyone will be happy that they are in a professional grade then start the grading system. This then gives meaning to promotion, as we speak senior teachers and heads of schools earn almost the same amount of money .Very few people are applying to be deputy heads and to be school heads because there is no benefit . If you applied you will be moved from your good school to rural schools and what you get at the end of the month as disposable income becomes less because that promotion is not recognized when it comes to remuneration . Currently , the ministry is not recognizing those with masters degree but we should get to a point where holders of masters degree are recognized . We even have holders of doctorates in the schools , they should be recognized also ‘ Said Mr Gundane .
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF EDUCATION
International Day of Education is commemorated on 24 January every year as a reminder of the importance of education and changes that education has brought to the world . According to a United Nations 2023 press release the international day of education 2023 is a global platform to sustain political mobilization , take forward national commitments and global initiatives and step up public engagement in favour of education as the path to peace . This year`s commemorations runs under the theme " to invest in people , prioritise education ". As ZIMTA we commemorated the day with our President Mr Richard Gundani reflecting on the education system of Zimbabwe .
QUESTION : Do you think education is prioritized in Zimbabwe ? If not, what measures do you think should be taken to make sure education is a priority ?
ANSWER : We still have a long story to tell about education in Zimbabwe .Our education system still has gaps and unfortunately the gaps are growing . The major gap is in the area of funding . Over the years the national budget has been allocating between 12 and 13 percent of the national cake to education and fortunately this year we got allocated to around 18 percent . The education system is not adequately funded through the money that we generate in our country so a lot of work needs to be done in terms of international engagement and reengagement to make sure we get support from other countries as we used to do in the 1980s. Ideally the international standard is that 20 percent of the national budget should be allocated to education hence you see that there is a shortage of primary and secondary schools . There are hardly any public institutions to talk about Early Childhood Development (ECD) , private players are the ones taking up that space . We still have the domination of religious organizations ( churches ) that are building more schools and yet we talk about public education . The government should be the major funder for education.
Question :Some children still do not have access to education today . What measures should the government take to make every child has acess to education ?
ANSWER : "When it comes to sustainable development goal number 4 ( SDG 4) we still have quality gaps , acess gaps because a lot of the disadvantaged learners , young people and even adults are not accessing education . Yes we have safety nets such as Basic Education Assistance Module ( BEAM ) . This net goes a long way in supporting those that are benefiting from it but the number of those that we like to benefit from it is forever increasing to the extent that funds in beam cannot cope . There should be free education in the proper sense where we are saying that if we are starting at primary level or basic education we make sure that education is free to the extent that even the food that learners eat has been provided for through the social welfare department together with the ministry of primary and secondary education . All the books and all materials and resources that learners require should be adequately funded by the government .Parents are hardly able to pay school fees so this means that the government should take up its space by providing free education.
QUESTION :What fruits has education beared to the country and the world ?
ANSWER : Education brings about development , the peace that we are enjoying in this country is alluded to the levels education because of the literacy rate in Zimbabwe . Development is also another result that we talk about . Advocates of democracy say that educated people know their rights well . Our teachers and nurses are on demand in other countries because of the quality education that Zimbabwe is providing for example Rwanda and The United Kingdom .This clearly depicts that we have a strong and rich pool of humans that we are exporting to other countries .

ZIMTA Wins yet another Court Case
Harare 02 December 2022, Zimta bagged another victory in a court case where it had challenged unfair suspensions on teachers who had been absent from work 07 to 10 February 2022.
According to the judgement handed down on 02 December 2022, the suspensions were unfair and should be set aside.
"Effectively what this means is that all those who were
suspended for absence between 7 to 10 February must be
reinstated and be paid their salaries, allowances and other
benefits they were entitled to had it not been for the unlawful and unfair suspension."

Preventing school related GBV can be achieved through a variety of extra-curricular activities and by giving teachers the tools to prevent and respond to violence. (UNESCO)

Let's address gender issues to students at early ages...

Let’s Unite and fight School-related gender-based violence (SRGBV) which is defined as acts or threats of sexual, physical or psychological violence occurring in and around schools, perpetrated as a result of gender norms and stereotypes, and enforced by unequal power dynamics. It also refers to the differences between girls’ and boys’ experiences of and vulnerabilities to violence. UNESCO, GMR, UNGEI, 2015
