Security researchers have discovered a new Android banking trojan that can spy and steal data from 153 Android applications.

Named Ghimob, the trojan is believed to have been developed by the same group behind the Astaroth (Guildma) Windows malware, according to a report published on Monday by security firm Kaspersky.

Kaspersky says the new Android trojan has been offered for download packed inside malicious Android apps on sites and servers previously used by the Astaroth (Guildama) operation.
The Tesla Semi has the potential to make serious waves and dominate the trucking industry after the dust settles from the global pandemic. Currently, the segment is populated by veterans such as Daimler and its Freightliner brand--which accounts for about 1 in 3 heavy-duty trucks sold in the United States. Yet despite these challenges, the Tesla Semi has five key advantages and one overlooked trump card that will allow it to perform very well in the long-haul market.

The global pandemic has not been kind to the auto industry as a whole, and it has been especially brutal to the long-haul trucking market. As noted in a Freight Waves report, orders of new trailers plummeted 55% in March, primarily due to the effects of the virus. Amidst such drastic effects from the virus, there is a good chance that the long-haul market will see some changes once the pandemic is over. Among these may be the expedited emergence of electric trucks, which are not dependent on oil and are friendlier to the environment.

What do I do with a wireless mouse which I lost the plug to?

A common problem that needs attention

What do I do with a wireless mouse which I lost the plug to? Answer (1 of 2): By “lost the plug”, I assume you mean you lost the wireless receiver which plugs into a USB port and provides the other end of the communications link to the mouse. If the mouse used Bluetooth to talk to its receiver, you may be able to use it with a generic Bluetooth receiver. ...

These Researchers Want to Run a Cable From the Earth to the Moon

It's a space elevator concept that could actually work.

It would be much easier to escape Earth’s gravity if you could skip the energy-intensive rockets.

That’s the idea behind the Spaceline, a newly-proposed type of space elevator that would link the Earth and the Moon in a bid drastically cut the cost of space travel.

Described in research published to the preprint server ArXiv by researchers at Columbia University and Cambridge University, the Spaceline would be tethered to the surface of the Moon and dangle down into geostationary orbit around the Earth like a plumb bob, waiting for astronauts to latch on and ride into the cosmos. The proof-of-concept paper found that the Spaceline could be constructed out of materials that exist today, raising the possibility of easier space travel and perhaps even orbital settlements.

Instead of rocketing all the way out of orbit, astronauts would only need to reach the end point of the Spaceline, cutting back the cost and challenge of rocket launches. Once it reaches the vacuum of space, free of terrestrial gravity and atmospheric pressure, the spacecraft would meet up with the cable and latch onto a solar-powered shuttle that would climb along its length.

Zephyr Penoyre, one of the Columbia astronomy graduate students behind the Spaceline, told Futurism that “the line becomes a piece of infrastructure, much like an early railroad — the movement of people and supplies along it are much simpler and easier than the same journey in deep space.”

Earth-based space elevators would be too taxing for any existing material — Earth’s stronger gravitational pull and rotation speed would snap the cable before it could be completed. But the risk of a catastrophic collapse, the researchers say, is lower when the cable is only tethered to the Moon. Throughout the paper, Penoyre and Cambridge astronomy

Is 8GB of DDR4 actually better than 16GB of DDR3?

Is 8GB of DDR4 actually better than 16GB of DDR3?

M. Taylor, Professor in Computer Architecture

Updated Jan 4, 2017

TLDR: 16 GB DDR3 is the most sensible choice for most people.

Many great answers to this question. The detailed answer of which is faster is “it depends on which program you are running.”

But there's more to take away at a high level. If we look at the performance of a computer with equal quantities of DDR3 or DDR4, across a range of programs, DDR4 and DDR3 are very close, maybe with DDR4 a few percent faster on average. DDR3 is faster in some cases. In a very small number of real programs, DDR4 gets you as much as 10%.

On the other hand, compare the performance of a program running on 16 GB of RAM versus 8 GB of RAM. If you need more than 8 GB, then the program will start paging, and ex*****on could slow down by 4–100X. So the 16 GB machine could literally be 10,000% faster. In fact, the different is so great you would have to quit the program because you could not bear to wait for it to finish. The 8 GB machine can effectively run fewer programs than the 16 GB machine! Another case is where you are using a lot of data (e.g. scrolling through pictures), in which case your extra DRAM will be used as a cache and can also speed things up by many multiples.

So if you have characterized your programs and the data they operate on very carefully, then 8 GB DDR4 might be the right solution, giving you up to 10% more performance. But if you don't know exactly what you are running, more DDR3 means that you are less likely to encounter serious performance problems with your machine, at a small average cost in daily performance.

Enabling technologies for highly efficient positioning in 5G

In order to meet the demanding communication requirements of future 5G networks, it is expected that such networks will be deployed with wide bandwidths. Such bandwidths will most likely be located at high frequencies where the free spectrum is more easily available. Due to the high carrier frequency and concequently more demanding propagation environments, it is envisioned that network densification will also play an important role in future 5G networks. Such densely deployed access nodes (ANs) in turn increase the line-of-sight (LoS) probability between the user node (UN) and ANs, thus enabling highly accurate time of arrival (ToA) estimation. It is also expected that ANs in 5G networks will be employed with smart antenna solutions such as antenna arrays which in turn enable also accurate direction of arrival (DoA) estimation. In general, all the aforementioned measurements among others can be efficiently estimated from uplink (UL) plitos sign

The Art and Science of Remembering

Key techniques for creating a lasting memory

Robert Roy Britt

Cramming for the exam, repeating someone’s name: Some experts say they’re not that effective at solidifying a memory.

Memories don’t just happen — they’re made. In the brain, the process involves converting working memory — things we’ve just learned — into long-term memories. Scientists have known for years that the noise of everyday life can interfere with the process of encoding information in the mind for later retrieval. Emerging evidence even suggests that forgetting isn’t a failure of memory, but rather the mind’s way of clearing clutter to focus on what’s important.

Other research shows the process of imprinting memories is circular, not linear. “Every time a memory is retrieved, that memory becomes more accessible in the future,” saysPurdue University psychologist Jeffrey Karpicke, who adds that only in recent years has it become clear just how vital repeated retrieval is to forming solid memories. This helps explain why people can remember an event from childhood — especially one they’ve retold many times — but can’t remember the name of someone they met yesterday.

Making memories stick

Karpicke and colleagues have shown that practicing retrieval, such as taking multiple quizzes, is far superior in creating solid memories than doing rote memorization. To study this, they had students use different methods to learn the translations of foreign words flashed on a computer screen:

One group simply studied each word and translation once, with no quizzes.A second group was quizzed until they could recall each translation.A third group was quizzed until they could recall each translation three times in a row after initial success. The fourth group did the same as the third, but their quizzes were spaced out in time.

A week later, all the students were quizzed again. Here’s the amount they remembered via each method:

RockBLOCK & LOHAN / The Register

LOHAN is a madcap project involving using a high-altitude-balloon to launch a glider to the edge of space, then have it released from the balloon and navigate/fly itself down to a designated landing spot. The unit needed a way to communicate when out of normal GPRS coverage.

In addition, the authorities required an emergency balloon cut-down in the event that LOHAN wandered off course.

Therefore, as well as transmitting GPS data when the unit was out of range of standard mobile networks, the RockBLOCK was also used to receive commands from the ground. If they wished to abort the mission, a message would have been sent to the RockBLOCK using our API, which would then be received on-board the spacecraft, and have activated the self-destruct mechanism.
