Today young people in Zimbabwe have woken up to a shocking data price review by a Government entity. Data prices have been reviewed for the third time in this quarter and now with an unimaginable 250% increase making the lowest data cap price to be $155USD. An average young person in Zimbabwe earns $1USD per day. Before the price review Zimbabwe was one of the countries with the most expensive data in SADC region and the review makes the country have the most expensive data in Africa and be amongst the top three in the world. In this era, access to data should be treated as a fundamental #humanright as the world has gone digital. This increase in data fights against the Government's mantra of 'leaving no territory behind, leaving no one behind.' The Second Republic under National Development Strategies 1 and 2 seeks 'to attain an upper middle income society by 2030.' This price review fights any effort that has been made by the government to attain the vision 2030. We therefore are calling upon the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe Potraz to make data prices be restored to their previous prices.

For over 18 months, Youth Alliance for Safer Cities (YASC) has been training youth-led groups under the Safe and Inclusive Cities project on civic engagement and social accountability. Of recent months, the youth-led groups supported by YASC have initiated various social accountability processes across the two provinces; Bulawayo and Harare.

The youth-led groups have been working with constituency development fund committees to understand how the Community Development Fund (CDF) works and also if the committees had young people representation. In Bulawayo YASC and youth-led groups successful advocated for young people representation in the committee, as a result the Pumula constituency now has three youths representatives in the CDF committee.

In Harare the processes are at different stages across the constituencies of Epworth, Mbare and Harare North. Of late the youth-led groups representatives from Mbare have approached the Parliament of Zimbabwe to understand what their Member of Parliament has done with Constituency Development Fund. The Parliament of Zimbabwe informed them that most MPs in urban areas particularly Harare have not been forthcoming to initiate processes for funds disbursements. The delegation learnt that the constituency can request the funds through the Senate for utilisation if the MP does not request them from Parliament. Armed with knowledge the youth-led groups are continuing engagements with CDF committee and other stakeholders so young people are represented in the committee and that fund are requested and utilized according to community priorities guided by the CDF utilisation principles.

#No to Drugs

My name is Tawanda Mumanyi, I am Zimbabwean. I was born and raised in the ghetto so I feel and go through the pain of watching my peers and neighbours being destroyed by an enemy that can be contained... DRUGS!!! For so long we have watched a lot of young people dying and falling victim to Mutoriro but nothing fruitful has been done to contain this drug killing our future. Who is supposed to keep us safe on the streets from drugs? Why do drug Lords seemingly have more power than the authorities in our country ? Everyone knows who the drug lords are and where they sell from but those with the power to put a stop to this menace destroying lives in our country watch and do nothing. On behalf of all children and parents who are victims of all the damage Mutoriro and other hard drugs are causing in our society I am screaming for HELP and intervention in our societies. We need to feel safe and protected tikwanise kuponesa vechidiki vedu. The YOUTHS are the Future. I know myself and other artists we have songs in which we sing like we are praising drugs and if that has in any way caused someone to take drugs, I am sorry. I don’t encourage it and that’s my stand. Sometimes we just sing, it doesn’t mean we do what we sing about and it doesn't make it right. I also have done songs discouraging drug abuse and so have other artists. My name is Tawanda Mumanyi, I am Zimbabwean.#Shotreipapo

Basket Hounds empowers girls in Mbare.

Story by Lynn K Mwawa

Basket Hounds conducted a Capacity Building Training which was aimed at empowering young women with skills to impart in their social and academic lives at Stodart gym Hall, yesterday.

Speaking during an interview with MBILEZ24, Basket Hounds Administrator, Mr. Munashe Saukira said "this Capacity building was a follow up of the Covid19 tournament we held in October, as we were celebrating the International Day of the Girl child, the tournament was aimed at bringing the girls together.

"We had discussions with the girls, and they raised issues that were affecting them as girls --exposing themselves to s*xual exploitation, gender based violonce, and this brought about today's programme" added Mr. Saukira.

Saukira went on to say that Basket Hounds was trying to come up with ideas and solutions to curb these challenges by teaching young women about grooming, gender-based violence and other factors that affect their well-being.

One of the girls who attended the training, identified by the name Tatenda, highlighted that "we have learnt a lot on this workshop, I now know how to build my confidence the dos and don'ts, I can say I am now empowered".

Most of the time, communities lack fair analysis to ensure girls' competitiveness and capacity for growth, particularly for the transformation and the future, and this interactive workshop also aimed at covering that divide with role-playing and individual practice, covering topics like grooming, hygiene, assertiveness, and social graces.

BasketHounds intends to grow and wants to make it a culture of doing these workshops once a month to make sure that young women in the community are safe and are able to voice their concerns and not be regarded as vulnerable beings.

Ethical digital story telling

Tabeth Chingwaru

Mbilez24, yesterday hosted youths from different communities at Mbare Gym Hall for a capacity building workshop which focused on the importance of ethics in digital story telling and the important aspects required in story telling.

Speaking during the workshop, the facilitator, Mr. Mlondolozi Ndlovu said '‘In digital protection one has to make sure they protect their audience by not spreading unverified news and subjective news." He also emphasised on the importance of news sources and how they are the important aspects of story writing especially in telling communication and development news.

The Director of Mbilez24 Mr. Richard Fani, one of the organisers of the event, pointed out that the capacity building was neccessary to equip more young people, especially young women with story telling skills along with the ethical guidelines that come with the profession of story writing in the era of social media. '‘This story writing capacity building has helped us to train ethical story writers who can serve their communities without bias.’' reiterated Mr. Fani.

Speaking after the workshop, one aspiring storyteller from Mbare, Abigail Chapotera expressed gratitude on the trainings she received and pointed out that she has acquired knowledge on how to be a story teller and how to craft different kinds of stories like feature and hardnews stories, and not forgetting to be ethical when writing those stories.

Youths raise allegations against Mbare Art Space

On Wednesday morning a group of youths from Mbare stormed into the "Mbare Art Space" accusing the owners of the space for disengaging with the community, promoting g**s and le****ns, and s*xual exploitation of young girls in Mbare. The youths marched from Mbare Musika to Mbare Art Space chanting songs that expressed their great distress over the issues.

Speaking at the demonstration which lasted for about 1hour 30 minutes before it was called off by Community Leaders and the Police, youths said that they were tired of seeing g**s and le****ns at the center and exclaimed that this is a threat to their cultural space and Mbare is not going to be silenced over this matter.

Speaking on s*xual exploitation allegations, Mr Garikai Makuyah who is amongst the founders of Mbare Art Space said, "They are key institutions in the country that deals with such issues and if there are any victims they must go and report otherwise everything is just heresy... the institution is there to serve the community and any person within the Art Space is sorely doing it on their own".

In a phone call interview with Mbilez24, Mbare Art Space had this to say, "On 1 December 2021 the Mbare Art Space was attacked. We thank the authorities for their timely intervention and their support to solve the matter.
Please bear with us while investigations are ongoing."

Residence who live nearby the art space had different views in support or against the allegations raised. "Vanhu ava vanonyepa hapaitwe zvinhu zvakadaro pa center apa, mayouths aya varikufurirwa kuita noise," said one resident in Pazarangu Rd. However another resident begged to differ and said "Mukomana wepa center apa anetsa paraini pano apedza vana vedu tave kutoshaya chimiro tichinzi takatadza kukudza vana vedu zvakanaka," although the identity of the guy was not reviewed.

There were also several debates in various WhatsApp groups in which residents participated. However, to calm down these discussions Councilor Shingadeya who is the Ward Councillor of the Mbare Art Space and Councillor Mangwiro of Ward 12 both pointed of leadership crisis at the art space. "What I know is there's a dispute between the Project Directors, Inyaya ye power iyi," commented Councilor Shingadeya in a WhatsApp group where residents had asked what was happening.

However, we also learnt that Zimbabwe Republic Police Stodart, arrested Mr Garikai Makuyah one of the founders of the art space on allegations of inciting public violence and facilitating a demo against homos*xuality at an institution that he is also a founder. Mr Garikai Makuyah spent one night at the police station until his lawyers came through the following day and he was released as the police are still carrying out more investigations around the matter.
