WHAT IS PACK JOURNALISM?

Pack journalism is the characterization of news reporting in which reporters from different news outlets collaborate to cover the same story, leaving news reporting homogeneous. This is the practice whereby reporters use the same sources of information for their stories.

CHRONICLES OF AN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT
- There's no Place Like Home

Part One
My name is Joseph Soko and I am from Zimbabwe. I am 35 years of age. Currently, I live in the sprawling high density suburb of Cosmo City, located in northern Johannesburg, South Africa. I
stay with my wife, Kelly, and our two sons Joe Jnr (8) and Jason (5). I first arrived here as a visitor in 2013 soon after the elections
in which Robert Mugabe (90) allegedly beat Morgan Tsvangirai (61) in a hotly contested poll. The resultant economic downturn led to the closure of a furniture manufacturing firm I worked for and I came alone to seek greener pastures. After finding a temporary job I sent for my family in 2014 and we haven't gone back home ever since. It’s not that I don't have relatives or friends to go back and
visit, but I already have my wife and kids here with me so I really don’t have anyone whom I’m obligated to visit – even though both my parents are still alive, and so is my wife’s mother.

The fact that we don't have documents to legalize our stay is partly the reason we have stayed put, but there really isn't any reason for us to be in a hurry to go back. To those in the know, Zim is a textbook basket-case which has only gotten worse since the ouster of Mugabe in 2017 through a military coup. Nowadays, a bottle of cooking oil
over there costs as much as ten bottles of cooking oil here in Mzansi! Who in their right mind prefers to freely go and get
robbed in broad daylight like that?

Let me state from the onset that I am not a politician - never have and definitely never will be. But the thing is that most - if not all - of the problems in my country were caused by that cursed species which calls itself by that name. This has led to probably all Zimbabweans becoming de facto political pundits as they ponder whether such-and-such a person or event will either worsen or ease their already desperate plight. The near-death of a vice President will have thousands of nimble Facebook fingertips typing away sure enough as if a person's next meal depends on that morbid occurrence. On the other hand, the potential discovery of petroleum deposits in some obscure parts of the country will sharply raise collective hopes even if we’ll have to wait for several years just to see if there is a bucket of hope in the
entire hullabaloo surrounding this "life changing" possibility.

Well, I'd rather weather the storm right here in South Africa working piece-jobs whilst my family gets three decent meals every day and my kids go to school (for free, if I may add, including a wholesome free lunch on top of that). How my two children go to a government school whilst I don't possess legal immigrant papers is an issue for discussion at another time, suffice it to say that they would be the first to demand that we return to S.A if we were to somehow end up back in Zim and they found themselves attending school there once again.

What makes my life almost bearable in a foreign country is the
fact that I'm not the only Zimbabwean scratching out a living in
S.A. Whilst I'm fortunate to live in a somehow decent two-
roomed brick cottage, many of my countrymen stay in patched
up tin shacks affectionately called "mikuku". The rent for these
abodes is comparatively very cheap, but the downside is the
almost transparent walls which are definitely far from being
soundproof, not to mention the searing heat in summer and
biting chill in winter.

It’s not really that I particularly enjoy the company of my
fellow countrymen, but just the fact that I’m not alone gives
me a certain amount of comfort in this place so far from
home. However, before I get into the intricate relationship
between me and the folks from back home, let me state why I
think that there really is no place like home.

The Zimbabwe Union of journalists has its roots in the Guild of Journalists formed in the early 1950s by journalists who had been active in what had been the Rhodesia branch of the South African Society of Journalists (SASJ).
