AFRICAN ACADEMIC COLLABORATIONS AND INTEGRATION VITAL - HIT VICE CHANCELLOR

HIT Vice Chancellor Dr. Eng. Quinton Chamunorwa Kanhukamwe has expressed hope for African universities to go beyond the traditional academic exchange programmes and pursue collaborations that contribute to a more practical African continental integration framework in order to move the continent forward.

Dr. Eng. Kanhukamwe said this while leading a visiting HIT delegation to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Takoradi Technology University (TTU) in Takoradi, Ghana. The aim of the Memorandum of Understanding is to establish academic relationship between the two institutions as well as strengthening mutual and friendly co-operation. The MoU shall also promote sustainable and productive academic collaboration through joint research projects in areas of mutual interest and students exchange learning programmes.

Vice Chancellor Kanhukamwe said the MoU with TTU will strengthen the already friendly relationship that exist between Ghana and Zimbabwe which was started by former President Cde Robert Mugabe.

“We believe in fostering sustainable relations. More so as sister countries on the same continent, we believe we need to be at the forefront of the integration of African countries and as institutions of higher learning, we must play a leading role,“ he said.

He stressed the need for African universities to move beyond mere academic collaborations to help in pushing for practical integration of the African continent.

“We are here basically to learn from the setting that you have and share where we are coming from to facilitate technology transfer framework where we can both collaborate over and above the traditional issues of academic exchanges, student exchanges and research collaboration. We hope that we will work together in contributing towards the internationalisation of our institutions and more importantly ensure a continental framework to bring integration to a more practical level so that we live it, see its fruits and move the continent forward…The era of generation of knowledge for knowledge sake should be done away with! We need solutions that move our nations up to the modernization and industrialization framework”, he added.

The Pro Vice Chancellor of Takoradi Technical University, Prof. Victor Kweku Bondzie Micah said his management should place collaborations with relevant institutions like HIT at the heart of TTU’s 5-year Strategic Plan which seeks to make the University a world-class preferred centre of excellence for TVET education. Prof. Micah also emphasized TTU’s commitment to forging such important collaborations first with university’s like HIT on the African continent.

“We look forward to having a very good working relationship with HIT which the Vice Chancellor is keenly interested in, as he sent us to Zimbabwe in May 2021 to initiate this collaboration. As a University, we believe in internationalization but then we also believe we should first start from Africa before going elsewhere. That is what prompted us to come to HIT so that we can learn from you on how well you have practicalized your programmes. TTU became a university some four years ago and now almost all our trainings are being turned into Competency-Base-Training, CBT, and that is where we are keen to learn a lot from you,” he said.

HIT Communications and International Relations Director Mr Tinashe Mutema said HIT is not in the business of producing just graduates but producing problem solvers who can monetize or commercialize innovation and technology while addressing societal problems.

Mr. Mutema added that HIT has so far patented seven (7) innovations, registered eight (8) industrial designs and has 33 copyrights hence currently seeking Pan African collaborations to advance its vision.

There were also presentations from the six faculties of Takoradi Technical University to the visiting HIT delegation.
The HIT delegation visited Takoradi Technical University in December 2021.
