The Victoria Falls Stock Exchange Logo and Corporate Identity are now done and approved. Jericho is proud to have played our part in bringing the vision of a First-Class Bourse to fruition.
So, our Zambia agency has caused quite a stir in Zambia with their latest campaign for ZANACO bank, which was banned after ABSA Bank Zambia complained to the Regulatory Body in that country.
Provocatively put up on a billboard outside the ABSA Bank HQ in Lusaka, the billboard unfortunately, had to be taken down after the ABSA complaint, but the reaction from the market has been ABSALUTELY fantastic, lots of goodwill generated for Zanaco, Zambia's biggest bank.
Our South East Africa Region CEO, Denford Magora, comments that this is basically anti-competitive behaviour by ABSA: "It's unheard of for any brand to complain to a Regulatory Authority over a factual and truthful brand campaign. It's anti-competitive behaviour and does a great disservice to consumers. We are just glad that, to a man and a woman, Zambian people affirm this campaign by their overwhelmingly positive reaction to it, making it THE Number 1 Trending topic on Zambian Twitter!"
Zanaco was voted The Best Bank in Zambia by Global Finance. Congrats to Zanaco and to our Team at Jupiter Lusaka!
IN the mid of the night. Ba ZANACO have removed their banner at Absa Headquaters in Lusaka.
2020 ADVERTISING SPEND FORECAST NOW OUT
At just 1.1% of Global Advertising spend, Africa is projected to see a spend of of just under US$7 Billion. Worldwide, advertising spend is forecast at a total of US$660 Billion in 2020.
Television is making a comeback (US$192 Billion globally), forecast to outstrip both Online Display (that's your google etc display ads) which is forecast to attract revenue of US$172 Billion. Social Media (Facebook, Twitter etc), is forecast to see revenue of US$102 Billion. Twitter and Snapchat are the least popular advertising channels, at US3.3 Billion and US$2.3 Billion respectively.
Overall, though, online will see revenue of US$335 Billion, while offline (Press, TV, Radio, Out Of Home etc) will attract revenue of around US$324 Billion.
The situation with Africa explains why there are virtually no Billion Dollar African Companies. Elsewhere, including China and Latin America, their investment in Advertising and Marketing comes from the genuine understanding that these are genuine drivers of sales and growth for companies.
The yearly forecasts, based on information collated worldwide from the budgets disclosed by clients to their agencies as part of the 2020 Strategic Planning, have always been accurate within a 1.5% to 2% margin.
Glad to see our latest ad for Nando’s taking the market and social media by storm. We’ve just finished assisting Nando’s launch a new Casa at Fife Avenue in Harare. Another new Casa is on its way Harare as well. Congrats to the Jericho and Nando’s teams!
Jericho's Voters' Roll Ad for Nandos is getting positive coverage on television channels like eNCA news in South Africa. Well done team!

BRETT GOOSEN JOINS JERICHO
We are delighted to welcome Brett Goosen as Executive Creative Director at Jericho Advertising.
Brett joins Jericho from Shift Engage where he was the Head of Creative.
We are excited to welcome Brett to the natural home of Superbrands.
Brett will work with the Jericho team as we seek to conquer even greater heights in Zimbabwe and beyond. He comes on board at an exciting time for Jericho. We have just opened our second office in Malawi, located in Lilongwe. Our Blantyre Office is now indisputably the largest agency in Malawi. The Lilongwe office has experienced a flying start, with three blue-chip clients already signed on, barely a month after the office was established.
Meantime, in Zambia, our office there continues its solid performance, picking four new clients in the first half of this year.
Two more office are being opened in Southern and East Africa before the end of the year.
We are over the moon to see our client, PPC, kick off their sponsorship of the Rest of Africa Sponsorship of the FIFA World Cup broadcast on DSTV.
The deal, negotiated by Jericho and announced by us on this page a couple of months ago, sees PPC as a brand gain immense value during this most coveted advertising period.
The TV ad was conceptulised and shot by Adrenalin Advertising, also from here in Zimbabwe!
The sponsorship runs across Studio branding, repeat screenings and commentary.
We are delighted to have helped PPC secure a sponsorship that was being fought over fiercely by companies from across Africa. PPC is one of only three Anchor Sponsors on DSTV, the others being Hyundai and Budweiser.
ZIMBABWE INTERNATIONAL TRADE FAIR NOW ON DSTV
We’ve put yet another Zimbabwean brand on DSTV. The ZITF is the latest addition to a fast-growing list of Zimbabwean brands featuring across Africa on this platform. You can catch the ZITF ad every single day across CNN, BBC and Sky News during prime time. The client tells us the feedback and response has been awesome.
Jericho CEO, Denford Magora, spoke to Business Day and Financial Mail of South Africa recently about the realities and nuances of marketing and advertising to African markets outside South Africa.

JERICHO SEALS US$12.5 MILLION FIFA WORLD CUP PAN AFRICAN SPONSORSHIP DEAL ON DSTV
We are elated to announce that Jericho has sealed the deal for one of our Pan African clients to be main/anchor Rest Of Africa (ROA) sponsor for the broadcasting of all FIFA World Cup matches across the African continent (excluding South Africa and Nigeria).
There was only one package available for the co-Sponsorship for Rest of Africa, which our client has now taken.
Delight Magora, Jericho’s Chief Finance Officer Officer, is seen in the photo attached with Sindiso Moyo, Account Manager, SADC, for DSTV Media Sales in Lusaka, Zambia, celebrating the signing of the agreement earlier today.
Worth US$12.5million dollars, the deal will see our client brand the Supersport studio, air several adverts across all 64 matches of the World Cup on DSTV’s Supersport and also prominently feature in all World Cup promotional advertising across Supersport channels, all repeats and highlights.
The only advertising slots remaining for the FIFA World Cup broadcasting on Supersport now are the spot advertising packages, giving the advertiser one advert per match across all 64 matches and repeats. These are going for a few hundreds of thousands of US dollars each and are limited in supply.
Jericho has already sold three of these on top of the Rest of Africa package worth US$12.5million that we have sold.
If you are interested in the spot advertising as an advertiser, please get in touch with our offices in Lusaka-Zambia, Blantyre-Malawi and Harare, Zimbabwe.
WHY JERICHO ADVERTISING IS NOT ENTERING THE LOCAL NGOMA ADVERTISING AWARDS THIS YEAR
Let us start by telling you that we fully expect and gleefully await the brickbats, insults and general badmouthing that will come from the usual suspects as a result of this announcement/post.
But that will not change the facts stated here.
The background to this is as follows: Jericho’s mission from its founding has always been to help elevate the creativity in Zimbabwe to international levels. To help creatives and our clients in Zimbabwe take on and beat the world.
As a result of this focus, we remain the only Zimbabwean advertising agency to have won a Loerie Award, one of the top 5 most prestigious advertising and creativity awards in the world. We are also the only agency in the history of Zimbabwe to be shortlisted at the Loeries for the last 4 years in a row.
We also walked away with an award for Effective Creativity from The New York Festival.
Keep that in mind when you see those who have not won even a wooden spoon outside our borders throwing brickbats at us as a result of this post.
The concerns raised herein were raised immediately after the awards last year by Jericho specifically with the Chairman of ZAAPA, who assured us that action would be taken and that the current organizers of the discredited awards would have no further role in future awards ceremonies.
The ZAAPA Chair also confirmed that the concerns Jericho had were shared by the industry at large and that other players had also complained to them in the interests of protecting the integrity of the industry.
The commitments and promises made then have not been honored and this is why we feel we can not legitimize the most discredited advertising awards in the world today: The Ngoma Awards of Zimbabwe.
So, why is Jericho writing off the discredited local Ngoma Awards?
All awards in the world demand that your entry includes the results that your ad or your campaign achieved measured against the objectives set by your client and their brief. Anyone who thinks results of a campaign or an ad are immaterial in any advertising awards show clearly does not understand world-class standards because there is NO advertising awards show in the world that says results of the investment into advertising by clients is immaterial.
First: when clients invest their money in marketing and creative strategies through advertising agencies, they deserve and expect a return. That return should be measured in how much the campaigns and strategies their advertising agency put on the table increase their sales or meet the objectives of the investment in the first place.
We had a sole judge at the Ngoma “Awards” last year who announced at the awards ceremony that results achieved for clients by campaigns he was judging did not matter and had been ignored in the judging. This was compounded by the fact that this judge was effectively the sole judge of the awards last year. Which takes us into our second point.
Second: The Zimbabwe Ngoma Awards we’re effectively judged by one local “judge” last year. Let that sink in for a moment: a whole country’s advertising awards were judged by one man who sat in a room and made unilateral decisions about tens upon tens of millions of dollars’ worth of client marketing investments. This is unprecedented and is the first time in the history of advertising awards ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, that something like this has happened.
No other country on earth has ever done this because it is unprofessional and an insult to clients and creatives alike. By that very act, no matter who you ask anywhere in the world, the awards show become completely discredited. This is not opinion, but fact.
Third: The organizers of the Ngoma Awards last year, decided not to invite an international judge to judge the awards, again something unheard of in the world for any advertising awards.
New York, The Loeries in South Africa, Cannes, The One Show, The London International Advertising Awards - all these ensure the participation of international judges in their awards. These are always drawn from Chief Marketing Officers and Creative Directors from other countries who have excelled by winning big at prestigious and credible awards around the world.
Zimbabwe chooses to wallow in mediocrity on this specific measure. Unfortunately, Jericho is allergic to mediocrity.
We will not support such infantile and contemptuous treatment of the millions of dollars Zimbabwean clients pour into their advertising strategies and creative executions. They deserve to have their investments and their businesses taken seriously.
Instead, Jericho will continue to enter select, credible international awards, like The Loeries, The New York Festivals, The One Show in New York and Cannes Advertising Awards.
We will continue pursuing return on investment for the clients who invest their advertising and marketing dollars through us by holding ourselves accountable for delivering increases in sales and real results every time.
We waited until today, the deadline for the Ngoma entries, to make this announcement because it is not our intention to influence any other agency not to enter these discredited local awards.
This is an individual decision based on principle.
Money is paid for each entry into the Ngomas. But over and above this, it takes an incredible amount of resources within an agency to prepare the entries properly and professionally.
To have all this effort treated with contempt by the Ngoma Awards is an insult to clients, creatives and the industry at large.
We wish those participating this year good luck.
Now, where are those brickbats?
ZIMBABWE CONSOLIDATED DIAMOND COMPANY GOES ONTO DSTV
The Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company has become the latest Zimbabwe brand to start advertising on DSTV. Companies across Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Angola are finding advertising on DSTV not only incredible value for money, but very very good for business. If you want to get onto this platform at unbelievable rates, get in touch with our offices in Zimbabae, Zambia or Malawi.
FANTASTICO: ANGOLA RULES
We are surprised at the vibrancy of Angola. We believe its economy is probably understated and underestimated. In terms of advertising revenue, Angola is proving to be second only to Nigeria, if we exclude South Africa.
FIFA WORLD CUP SPONSORSHIPS PACKAGES NOW AVAILABLE ON DSTV ACROSS AFRICA

For Co-Sponsors, the one package on offer will also include studio branding amongst a host of other placements across all matches, which will be broadcast live in HD Quality.

JERICHO SHORTLISTED AT THE LOERIES MIDDLE EAST & AFRICA AGAIN - UNPRECEDENTED AND HISTORIC 4th YEAR IN A ROW
Zimbabwe's Only World-class Advertising Agency has done it again, winning Finalist awards at the Loeries Africa and Middle East awards held in South Africa this year.
This is the 4th year in a row that Jericho has featured at the Loeries, one of the most prestigious award shows in the world for the Advertising industry.
Jericho remains the only Zimbabwean Advertising Agency to have won a Loerie in the history of the country (winning a Gold Loerie for in 2014).
Congratulations to the team for their two Finalist wins this year. It just goes to show why Jericho truly is Zimbabwe's one and only World-class Advertising Agency!
THE EVOLUTION OF ADVERTISING
We could have titled this post "Print Is Dead" or "Outdoor Is Dead" or even "TV is Dead". But those facts are actually known by each every savvy marketer not only in Zimbabwe, but around the world.
"Half of my advertising dollars are wasted. Problem is, I don't know which half." This famous quote applies today more than ever.
This post is a bit long, so only serious marketers and serious brands need read on.
Zimbabwe is fast moving away from the Me-too mentality amongst the real marketers in this country.
So much so that, the best way to identify an amateur marketer or advertiser today is to look where they are spending their budgets.
The amateurs are still obsessing over antiquated media like print, press, Outdoor and even Facebook. Yes, Facebook is now an antiquated medium. Those at the cutting edge of consumer psychology, reader psychology and behaviour will tell you that the days of brands dictating to consumers are long over. It died with that other favourite of amateur marketers: "The Call To Action".
Elsewhere, marketers and agencies are always digging to find out WHERE the consumer is now, so that they can connect with them at the places they congregate. That's how Facebook grew its advertising revenue into billions: people had migrated from media like Print and even Television and were now to be found on Facebook. So brands followed them there.
The world has since moved on. Again. The consumer has since moved on.
The consumer now calls the shots about where, when and how you connect with them.
You may be shocked to learn that, in this day and age, there are brands who still use email marketing (yes!) and Bulk SMS!!
There are channels and media in Zimbabwe today that 99% of our local marketers do not even know exist. And those who do know are making a killing using them, raking in millions of dollars a day by using those mediums instead of following the amateurs into media that now brings little to no returns on the marketing dollar.
At Jericho, we spend a fortune doing deep dives into the market, constantly monitoring not only our clients' competition, but also constantly looking at new latest media with hefty audiences and new channels that have audiences of millions a day but are ignored by other marketers.
Because these mediums are below the radar, they do not (yet) charge a fortune, but the results they bring our clients are stunning.
This is how Jericho has been able to become the first and, so far, only, Zimbabwean agency to achieve billings of US$15 million in a year.
Pan African clients now account for 55% of our revenue primarily because they know and recognise that geography means nothing in the era of these new, effective media.
We look forward welcoming you into our world-class offices for solutions that will cost your brand HALF of what you currently spend on marketing.
BECAUSE WE HAVE FIGURED OUT WHICH HALF OF MARKETING BUDGETS is being wasted ACROSS AFRICA, not just in Zimbabwe!
