We have an eclectic mix of Creatives participating in our Playwriting Masterclass. Meet Lloyd Junior Munhanga, a Chemical and Process Engineer with storytelling inclinations.

In the class, Lloyd shared, 'The first person I ever wrote for was myself. Not myself as I am, but a part of me that never got to share an experience.'

Lloyd likes telling the stories of people that otherwise couldn't and starting dialogue about unpopular topics.

His hope for this experience is to network with creators, learn and share from each others' experiences, grow, and encourage each other to keep pushing as this particular industry is not an easy one; it requires passion, tenacity, and discipline.

@GladysKalichini wins 2022 @HenrikeGrohsArtAward!
"We are pleased to announce Zambian artist Gladys Kalichini as the winner of the Henrike Grohs Art Award 2022. Her multidisciplinary research-based practice really caught our attention. Through video, sculpture, and installation, Kalichini offers a melancholic meditation on Zambia’s colonial and postcolonial histories, addressing such themes as trauma and death. Her approach to the archive as a space of enunciation, shines a critical light on acts of omission or erasure of women’s contributions to Zambia’s political history and, her ethnography on the spaces occupied by women in contemporary Zambia is a brilliant contribution. The award will spur Gladys to continue to push her exacting and boundary-defying practice in interesting directions and could serve as a spark in energizing the art scene in her home country of Zambia” said the jury, made up of Ugochukwu-Smooth C. Nzewi, Serubiri Moses and Princess Marilyn Douala Manga.
Gladys Kalichini is a contemporary visual artist and researcher from Lusaka, Zambia. Her work centres around notions of erasure, memory, and representations and visibilities of women in colonial resistance histories.

Gladys is currently a PhD candidate at Rhodes University in South Africa and a member of the Arts of Africa and Global Souths research programme, supported by the Andrew. W. Mellon Foundation and the National Research Fund.

Congratulations Gladys!

General information

The Zimbabwe-German Society (ZGS) is a non profit making organisation and was established in 1983 as a society to foster mutual knowledge and understanding between the people of Zimbabwe and the people of Germany, as well as any other interested person. The Society accomplishes this task by promoting and supporting upcoming cultural activities to create a bigger cultural identity and supporting Zimbabwean artists and the cultural scene in Zimbabwe through providing them with a platform for career development. In 1996 the Society announced its inclusion into the Goethe-Institut family and since then is officially called the Goethe-Zentrum Harare / Zimbabwe-German Society (GZH/ZGS). In 2009 the German Development Service decided to take the GZH/ZGS as one of their project partners and the new cooperation was born. This is one of two cooperation projects world wide, where the Goethe-Institut and the German Development Service come together in a cooperation. GZH/ZGS fosters the Cultural exchange through programming of events and the teaching of German and the official languages of Zimbabwe. As culture is a mirror of society GZH/ZGS wants to challenge the thinking of Zimbabweans and Germans through intercultural social exchange.
