So, this is one of our latest installations. There are 18 x 320 watt Solar Panels connected to this system (5760 Watts) It is a 10 Kva Victron Quattro Inverter with a 13,8 Kilowatt Hour LITHIUM ION Battery (Made by BYD).
BYD have been working with Victron to ensure that there is full connectivity and communication between the Battery and Victron products.

This is our latest installation!
An Outback 3kva Inverter.
There is a 2.4 kilowatt array of panels.
A Morningstar 60A MPPT Charge Controller.
4 x 200Ah Batteries.
Notice that we have protected the Battery cables with a 100A DC breaker.
We have a breaker on the incoming cable from the panels to the charge controller and the outgoing cables from the charge controller to the batteries.
The batteries are neatly housed in a protected battery cage!

An Interesting Article taken from DC Battery .com Website. Always ask to see a Data sheet showing the cycle life of the battery you are purchasing. Batteries with a cycle life of over 1000 cycles at 50% depth of discharge are the ones worth going for.

DEEP CYCLE BATTERIES
What is the difference between deep cycle batteries and starting batteries?

ANSWER:
Unfortunately, the term Deep Cycle has been overused by the battery industry as a sales tool to imply a heavy duty product. This has led to confusion and difficulty in battery selection. One must understand that any battery may be termed deep cycle as all batteries may be fully discharged and charged. However, a true deep cycle battery, such as Rolls or Lifeline, is capable of thousands of these hard cycles during its life without losing its capacity. Comparatively, many advertised deep cycle batteries composed of thin plates, excessively porous separators, and low density plate oxides will suffer permanent capacity loss after a few dozen cycles and will shortly sulfate or shed plate material and fail. Batteries without substantial materials designed for true deep-cycling will lose more than half of their capacity after only a few cycles. A 200 Amp-hour battery will shortly become a 100 Amp-hour battery for the remainder of its shortened service life. What initially may seem to be an inexpensive battery to purchase, now costs twice as much per Amp-hour. True Deep cycle batteries will perform well as cranking (car or truck ) batteries, however, cranking batteries will not survive deep cycle use.

Deep cycle batteries can be used in any application and exhibit a long service life, while cranking batteries are limited to starting applications only. Cranking batteries exhibit poor service life in cycling applications.

Ok. So there is a local Solar Company claiming savings of up to $80 a month when fitting their type of solar geyser. Let's take a few moments to analyse this. $80 Is equivalent to 800 Zesa units. Divide this by 30 days and the non solar geyser is using around 26 units a day. The average 200 litre geyser will be fitted with a 2 kilowatt element and is required to be on for around 4 hours for the geyser to go from ambient temperature to an acceptable 65 degrees Celsius. So that means that the element will have consumed 8 units. A far cry from the 26 units claimed to be saved by the solar geyser. Don't get me wrong, I think that having a solar geyser installed is a solid investment and savings of around $30 -$40 a month are achievable. Up to $80?? Hmmmm!

Solar Power for Dummies Part 7: Inverters - Techzim

This is a comment from Tech -Zim
"Devices you should never use with your inverter"
"High voltage/current devices like stoves, irons and microwaves are likely to damage your solar system if you use them with your inverter so it would be prudent to never use them when the power is out. You can always use LP gas like I do."

I Disagree with this statement (Except for the stove) if you have an inverter capable of Handling the above equipment, for example the 5Kva Quattro pictured below. Most microwaves consume around 1500 watts and you probably will use it for 20 minutes, you can get a 1200 watt Iron and the Iron cycles on 20 seconds off 30 seconds. You can purchase 1500 watt Kettles - only on for 5 minutes! - Comments?

OK! So you’ve heard about a local company offering an “Off Grid” solar power system that will run TV, Lights and a refrigerator selling for just around $1600-00 The system includes the following:
Qty 4 x 160watt Panels
Qty 1 x Solar Regulator (Charge Controller)
Qty 2 x 120Ah Batteries
A 1600Va Pure Sine Inverter

Let's analyse what is being offered!

What is the Maximum amount of energy that the 4 x 160 Watt Panels can harvest?
On a good Sunny day in June (Shortest daylight month in the year) Probably around 3200 watt hours of energy or 3.2 Zesa Units (640 Watt array x 5 Peak solar hours)
How much energy will the TV Lights and Refrigerator use in a 24 Hr Period?
Lets allow for 6 Energy efficient Lights (11 Watts) to run for 6 Hrs
6 x 11 x 6 = 396 Watt Hours
Lets allow the TV + Decoder to run for 6 Hours (Average 32” TV plus Decoder uses 120 Watts)
6 x 120 = 720 Watt Hours
The Refrigerator will cycle on and off and will be on for about 14 Hrs a day. The average Upright single door Refrigerator runs at around 150 watts
14 x 150 = 2100 Watt Hours

Add all these up and they come to 3216 Watt Hours. The same amount that the panels are theoretically capable of producing! (Not allowing for cable inefficiencies) BUT if you have a small amount of cloudy weather the system will fail!
The major problem is in the size of the batteries!!!
How much energy can you safely draw from the batteries?
You don’t want to discharge the batteries more than 50% or they will fail prematurely!
So you will have a useful 60Ah of battery
60 (Ah) x 24 (volts) = 1440 watt Hours
The fridge alone will drain the batteries more than 50% overnight Causing the system to fail! (Bear in mind that you have had the TV and lights on for a good 4 hrs in the evening!)
So the batteries have been grossly undersized!

We would be interested to know how many people have bought a system similar to this and have found it to be working successfully??
Then we wonder why people lose confidence in Solar Energy!!

Here is something interesting! Take a look at the Graph (Courtesy of http://www.zaraho.org.zm/hydrology/lake-levels) The generation level of Kariba is 1.2 meters below where we were this time last year! Zesa is currently pumping out a fairly constant 600MW of power! At this rate, will we still be able to generate adequate power from Kariba by the start of next year??

This is one of our latest installations! We have 12 x 300Watt Solar Panels (3.6 Kilowatts) feeding into a Magnum PT100 Charge Controller which is feeding Qty 8 x Surrette S-550 Solar Batteries. (430Ah at 48 Volts) The inverter is a Magnum 4.3Kva 48V unit which is wired into all the plugs and Lights, running the fridges, Microwave, Kettle, Washing Machine, Hair Dryer, computers etc. The Borehole Pump and Tank Boost pump are also connected to the system! This system does not run the Stove or Geysers! We have programmed the system to "Lockout" Zesa from 8am till 4pm Making use of Zimbabwe's abundant sunshine! With Careful management of the system, the owner could go completely off grid in the event of a prolonged fault!

This is a very simple installation of an Outback 2Kva 24 volt Inverter at local Medical Institution Lecture Centre. The inverter powers 3 x electrical power points for 3 Digital Projectors and Laptops. This is a back up installation and keeps the projectors and laptops running for up to 30 minutes while the facilities' main Generator is being turned on. The 2 Batteries in the lock up cage below the inverter, are Deka 8G27 99Ah Gel Batteries.

Educational Institute goes off grid during student working hours 19/05/2016

A Local Educational Institute has contracted us to take them off grid, and operate off solar during their student working hours. We have achieved this with a Magnum Energy 4.3 Kva Inverter system. The system has Qty 8 x High Quality Rolls - Surrette S550 Solar Batteries. (430Ah at 48Volts) Qty 12 x Suntech 300 Watt Solar Panels (3.6 Kilowatt Array), a Magnum PT 100 (100A MPPT Charge Controller)
The system will also give the institute over 24 working Hours of Backup energy in the event of chronic Load Shedding! We Commissioned the system Today -19th May 2016. Another happy Customer!!!

New legislation recently promulgated for battery importation into Zimbabwe, has removed Deep Cycle batteries from the Open General Import License (OGIL) list, and an import permit will now be required.
How will this affect the Solar/Backup industry??
Much will depend on how readily the required permits will be granted, but what we can be sure of is that high quality Deep Cycle Solar batteries could become harder to find. Local manufacturers do not have the capacity to meet the range of current needs, nor the technology to produce Gel and AGM type batteries.
UPS will be applying for the necessary permits to ensure that our standards of installation are maintained. However, in the interim, supplies are guaranteed, as we are fortunate to have over 19 tonnes of top quality, Rolls deep cycle batteries in stock. These batteries are produced by Surette of Canada, and have long been recognized as a leading brand for Solar applications.
