Name: Byron Ramphal
Birthday :13/02/03
A level Subjects : Design and Technology, Maths and Physics

Byron is the St Christopher’s head boy and the head of the Merchandise committee under the Spirit committee for this year. He is the only appointed leader at St Christopher’s which has put a lot of pressure on him and changed his perspective of his life at school to one of wanting to give back and leave a legacy to be proud of.
He is pursuing a career in product design in which he wants to be all rounded and self employed in his designing and creating in all materials and be well known for his expertise. This is truly his passion as whenever he has free time, he’ll be in the workshop at his house. This was valuable as being a part of the Merchandising committee, he got to really put his skills to test and help build the foundations of the spirit committee and leave something he truly believes and worked hard at.

He is currently applying to universities in the Netherlands for next year yet he wants to return to Zimbabwe because it’ll always be home to him and he wants to help improve it.

The COVID experience taught him that they will always be a solution to a problem and this helped him in his career direction change during the lockdown, switching from an mechanical engineering degree to his true passion in product design.
Another activity that took up a considerable amount of time in his high school career was archery. He has been doing this since junior school and represented Zimbabwe every year from form one to four. This competition took him to the best place he has visited, Drakensburg in South Africa. Though he does not plan to continue archery later in his life, he’s grateful for the experiences and knowledge he learnt from it.

His biggest role model was the head boy of St Christopher’s when he was in form one, he was the first person Byron personally knew who’d lead with compassion yet was fair and strict which is how Byron gained his leadership style from.

We wish Byron all the best in his studies and in his return to Zimbabwe afterwards.

Full name - Phyllis Nokuthaba Panashe Mugadza
Birthday - 5th November
Major and A level subjects - Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Geography

Phyllis Mugadza was Headgirl of the Academy back in 2016 and is still well known for the impact she made on the school. She said her time at Hellenic was filled with growth and many lessons that taught her the importance of perspective; that is empathy and listening to truly understand other people. The Academy also taught her the importance of “purpose-driven-leadership.” which she has adapted to all facets of her life.

Her time at the Academy was filled with experiences and moments she still cherishes to this day and her fondest memory was the response she had from the last speech she had made. She also remembers many lively breaktimes that evolved from playing open gates in form one to the epic rap battles in Upper 6. She described Hellenic as a ‘training ground’ in which she was given the opportunity to create and bring her ideas to life. One of these ideas was to start the Debate club as she was motivated by the discussions she had with other pupils and thought it would be ideal to have a formal environment in which pupils could share and compare their perspectives. Another concept she started at the Academy was the Hero’s of Hellenic page which she envisioned being used to share the stories of those who aren’t in the spotlight yet have very valuable lessons and to add to the community of Hellenic.

At the moment Phyllis is currently attending Yale University, she is the first Hellenic student to do so and she feels incredibly grateful and privileged to experience this world class education. She has recently finished her undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering and has already begun her masters degree in Public Health. From these passions and her love of business, she has created a new startup company called Sprxng LLC. She chose to attend Yale because it aligned well with her outlook which she summed up as “embrace the and, not the or.”

She will never stop learning and being curious as she believes that inspiration is constantly around us in the people we are surrounded by. In five years from now she will most likely still be in the US working on her business but, in the further future her biggest goal is to return to Zimbabwe and help to rebuild this country as she says her time living abroad has given her a fresh perspective on Zimbabwe and the issues it's facing. We are wishing Phyllis the best in her studies and her start-up, and we are infinitely excited to see how she will impact the community when she returns.

Name: Tapiwa Zvidzai
Age: 19
Birthday: January 3rd 2002
A level subjects : Maths, Economics and Business Studies
Year graduated the Academy : 2020

Tapiwa, more commonly known by his nickname Zed, was at Hellenic from grade one all the way to graduating last year.
He was a prefect in 2020 and says it taught him many things; drive, discipline, understanding and most importantly respect for the leaders of the world.
Zed states that he did mess around a bit in his earlier years of high school but the turning point which set him on the right path of responsibility was when Taine Roelofsz told him “You can do great things”. Zed was in form two at the time and Taine took him under his wing, being three years his senior, and pushed him to be the best version of himself.

Zed’s most memorable moments at the Academy were in his sporting ventures: making the 7’s rugby team in form 4, golf tour to Sun City and playing Mashonaland Rugby 4 times throughout his school career.
His last memory was one of reward as after all his commitment to rugby at Hellenic, he finally received his white blazer weeks before he finished school. He says the main reason he achieved this was because of all his time at the gym, stating he received full gym colors definitely.

His last year of high school was altered hugely by COVID-19 yet it taught him that anything can go wrong at any moment so you have to keep trying again. This ties in with his life motto “Regret is worse than Failure” which he uses as a guide in all his decisions.

Currently Zed is a student at Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth where he is doing online classes from home for his business degree. This workload has not stopped him from pursuing his business knowledge in experience, he did some work for Cardinal Chartered Accountants but now has moved up to be a partner in his own startup company in Harare. He is planning on staying in Zimbabwe in the future where he can grow his business, Hercules Nutrition, and help the community here which is one of his great passions. He states in the future he may be interested in going into politics but prefers the entrepreneurship aspect of business which he got from Mrs Hrusa who was his favorite teacher at the Academy.

We are so proud of Zed of his endeavors in these hard times globally and trust he will succeed greatly.

Name - Zahra Sachikonye
Age - 18 years old
Birthday - 12/02/2003
Favorite slang word - Steezy

Our head girl of 2021! When her name was called for head girl at the end of 2020, she was completely overwhelmed and shocked but felt great honor as she has been at Hellenic since nursery school and it has become part of who she is.
To her, leading the academy is an absolute privilege, a job in which she can embody service to the entire school which is her favorite part of the role.
This position has helped her develop a lot too: her leadership style, her teamwork skills within the prefect body and her time management skills.

On top of her responsibilities, she is also head of interact, girls choir and public speaking this year at the academy!
Her role in this school brings about very little free time but the fact that this work is serving a purpose for the greater good keeps her determined.
Her role model is her incredible mother who gave her the confidence and core beliefs for her to be who she is today and to thrive.
She is currently doing economics, literature and history for her A levels and from these she’s looking at a range of possible degrees for next year, in the humanitarian sector, of which she plans to study in the UK. She states that she believes every job can have an aspect of leadership in it if you make one and that she will lead in any way she can in her future.

Her message to future head girls is to remember the reason you're doing this job and that they are there to serve the school, and that they are given the position because of who they are currently and not who the school wants them to be so stay true to yourself.
To the future U6s and prefects, she says lead with love because it’s the only way to lead right for a school.
The best advice she can give to the form 1’s is that everything will work out in time so persevere through, embrace the waiting, be patient with everyone around you and most importantly yourself.

She is a trying optimist who believes each day brings a new blessing, this belief comes about from her religious faith which is a central pillar in her life.
Her wildest dream is to one day go out and be a missionary which is quite far out of her current comfort zone.

We are so blessed to have her lead our school this year and her legacy will be one of absolute kindness

Name: Brian Kufakowadya
Birthday: 9th June
Nationality: Zimbabwean and South African
Favorite book: Things fall apart by Chinua Achebe and Animal Farm by George Orwell

Mr Kufa has been a happy smile at Hellenic academy for 4 years. His immense knowledge of chemistry, physics and maths has been used to teach students at 13 different schools for over 31 years! His love and passion in the sciences has been around from a young age through his older brothers both in scientific careers. His first inclination was to become an engineer in the footsteps of one of his brothers but pursued teaching after being placed in a vacancy once he obtained his bachelor’s degree. He says he could never decide on his favorite topic or field, he loves to read, learn and teach them all.
He first went to the University of Zimbabwe and did a Bachelor of Science and a Masters then continued onto Japan to complete his second Masters degree. After these, he went on to do many postgraduate courses specifically in Nairobi as well as in Harare .He had a passion for education thus received many diplomas and certificates in the sciences.
COVID-19 has been hard on everyone but in particular teachers having to adapt to the same quality education on a virtual platform. Mr Kufa, though missing seeing his students everyday, said he was grateful that the virus helped him improve his computer skills.
His proudest accomplishment has been seeing his children and students grow both intellectually and socially and what he loves most about his job is that he facilitated that growth in them. Another incredible accomplishment is writing several books used for Zimsec exams in physics, maths and chemistry that are used nationwide.
He thoroughly encourages all students to take some interest in the sciences and in particular girls. It is only developing and evolving thus is full of so many opportunities globally. Scientists play an important role in all fields and countries worldwide.
His absolute favorite place in the world, where he hopes to visit again, is the small city of Narita, Japan where he loved watching the planes take off from Japan International Airport. He had once lived there and it remains a happy place in his mind. In his free time he loves gardening and fishing to fully indulge in nature.

Mr Kufa is such a vibrant smiley face to see around the school and we are so grateful to have him leading our bright scientists at the academy into the future
