Opportunity is a beautiful contextualizer. I could argue that several things are going “wrong” during the lockdown limbo we find ourselves in, but there are opportunities waiting to be grabbed, big and small.

For me, opportunity has looked like:
• plantifying our home and telling myself “this is the last plant” which I probably said a few plants ago;

• remaining socially connected and invested, though physically distant;

• prompting myself to rise before the sun to enjoy the benefits detailed in The 5AM Club, though I was more consistently in the 6AM club;

• wanting to be structured and channel extra home time in certain directions, but mostly letting myself go with the flow and see what I instinctively make of it, without feeling guilty if I don’t tackle an entire to-do list.

• getting to know myself better!

What opportunities has this last month brought you?

Hello June!

Can’t quite wrap my head around how fast time seems to have moved. Time flies when you’re having fun!

Winter is here for us in Zim. Now more than ever the opportunities to move and generate extra warmth is welcome.

Having embraced virtual Pilates for some time, we’ll continue celebrating what our bodies can do this way, as well as in person.

Day 17: The Shoulder Bridge has it all: stability and mobility, dynamic stretching and strengthening, body awareness and control.

Modifications include bending the knee to 90 degrees or supporting the pelvis with a ball, which provides feedback on your stability.

Day 16: Scissors & Bicycle

Classically done holding your pelvis with your hands, and arms strategically wedged underneath your body for support - I struggle with the weight on my wrists, hence a modification with the ball!
The opposing movement of the legs creates instability around the pelvis - and further added to with the ball - so the abdominals work in their stabilizing capacity here. Both exercises provide a great dynamic stretch to the hamstrings and hip flexors too.

BREATH is a crucial part of Pilates - the breath pattern facilitates the rhythm and coordination of these exercises.

Life must be lived, but I will still commit to following through on #marchmatness2021 albeit delayed at times!

Day 15 is the Neck Pull, the big brother of the Roll Up. Requiring us to move through a greater range of movement than usual abdominal exercises, with abdominal control and spine mobility. So good but oh so challenging!
My go-to modification is placing a bolster in the small of the back to assist the roll up - a rolled towel is perfect, I improvised with an ankle weight!
My second modification is reaching the arms forward prior to rolling-up, to modify my centre of gravity for a moment and assist my roll up.

🔴 Important safety note: a number of the “spinal articulation” exercises are contraindicated for certain conditions of the spine. With an understanding of this, an instructor will/should provide a suitable modification or alternative to keep you moving safely.

It’s been a satisfying end to the week in my edible container garden 🌱 it’s my first time growing most of these - nurturing them has been a huge learning experience and a rewarding exercise, physically and metaphorically!
With the netting and YouTube channels to educate me on companion planting, there’s been almost no need for further pest management. And our weather has been so wonderful.

Also one of my favourite extension exercises, with a lovely, much-needed stretch of the anterior shoulder area. The coords tend to be the first place the mind goes, but once the flow takes over, it’s really enjoyable.

Almost caught up: Day 13’s One Leg Kick is one I have tended to revere from a distance 😂

At the start of my Pilates mat journey, maintaining the extension of either my hips or spine was just not attainable. It frustrated me to the point that I was ok to forget the exercise existed.

As my mind and body became better conditioned through regular practice, it began to feel a little less intimidating, but still very hard work. Fast forward a few years and I got it in my comprehensive exam! I had no choice but to commit, BREATHE, dig deep and connect mind to my body. I never worked so hard in one exercise, but I think it paid off.

Today I could probably still practice and teach it more, but I have a better relationship with it. All thanks to modifications.

So again, my #mmthankyou is for the way Pilates will meet you where you are, and gradually refine what may have once felt totally impossible in your body, so you can reap the mental and physical rewards of this mindful movement practice.
