THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT CHILDHOOD CANCER
1. Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide. 1 in 264 children and adolescents will develop cancer before the age of 20.

2. Every two minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer. That’s 300,000 kids around the world every year.

3. The average age of a child diagnosed with cancer is 6. Childhood cancers are diagnosed in all ages, from newborn infants to children and young adults.

4. 80% of children diagnosed with cancer are in developing countries.Childhood cancer is a global problem, and one institution can’t solve it alone.

5. The most common childhood cancer is acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
In the 1950s, almost every kid with ALL died. But today, about 90% of children with the most common form of ALL will survive.

6. In 80% of kids with cancer, the cancer has already spread to other areas of the body by the time it is diagnosed. Children with cancer need to begin treatment right away.

7. Much of what we know about treating adult cancers has been learned from childhood cancer research.

8. There are over a dozen types of childhood cancer. Few children are diagnosed with some type which makes it very difficult to do research on these.

9. One in five children diagnosed with cancer will not survive. For the ones who do, the battle is never over.

10. More than 99% of childhood cancer survivors have a chronic health problem and 96% have severe or life-threatening conditions.

Improving childhood cancer survival requires supporting children and their families while they experience the unimaginable social, economic, and emotional burdens of having a child with cancer.

BLOOD CANCERS
Most blood cancers start in the bone marrow which is where blood is produced. Blood cancers occur when abnormal blood cells start growing out of control. This interrupts the function of normal blood cells which fight off infection and produce new blood cells.

Types of blood cancers
1. Leukemia occurs when the body creates too many abnormal white blood cells and interferes with the bone marrow’s ability to make red blood cells and platelets.
2. Lymphoma is a blood cancer that develops in the lymphatic system from cells called lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell that helps the body fight infections.
3. Multiple myeloma is a blood cancer that begins in the blood’s plasma cells, a type of white blood cell made in the bone marrow.
4. Myelodysplastic syndromes is a rare type of blood cancer sometimes referred to as bone marrow failure.

Treatment for blood cancer depends on the type of cancer, your age, how fast the cancer is progressing, where the cancer has spread and other factors. Some common blood cancer treatments include:
• Stem cell transplant infuses healthy blood-forming stem cells into the body. Stem cells may be collected from the bone marrow, circulating blood and umbilical cord blood.
• Chemotherapy uses anticancer drugs to interfere with and stop the growth of cancer cells in the body.
• Radiation therapy may be used to destroy cancer cells or to relieve pain or discomfort.
