On July 8th, 2026, Safe Strides Initiatives (SSI) visited Mahatma Gandhi Secondary School in Mtendere, Lusaka, with a clear goal: to strengthen and build the capacity of the newly formed Student Prevention Club (SPC) committee, the pupils who have volunteered to lead substance abuse prevention efforts in their own school.
๐ฅ Each newly selected SPC executive member received hands-on training using SSI's Student Prevention Club Leadership Manual, covering peer-led prevention, life skills, and how to plan and run awareness campaignsโequipping them to lead with confidence long after SSI leaves the room.
The day opened with a prayer led by a pupil, setting a tone of unity and shared purpose.
Alongside the committee training, SSI also engaged the wider student body through a lively sensitization sessionโrole-plays, group discussions, and Q&A on the dangers of drug and substance abuseโgiving the new committee their first taste of the peer-education work ahead of them.
Educational materials were distributed to both students and teachers, to reinforce continued learning and advocacy beyond the day itself.
This marks an important milestone in building a peer-driven prevention network at Mahatma Gandhi Secondary Schoolโone led by young people, for young people.

International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking | 26 June 2026
Yesterday, Safe Strides Initiatives joined the global community in commemorating the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking under the theme:
"The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses."
As highlighted in the message from the UNODC Executive Director, Dr Monica Juma, addressing the world drug problem requires innovation, evidence-based prevention, strong partnerships, and compassion for those affected.
At Safe Strides Initiatives, we believe prevention begins long before substance use starts. Through education, youth empowerment, community engagement, research, and strategic partnerships, we are working to build a generation of young people equipped to make informed decisions and lead healthy, productive lives.
Drug abuse is not only a public health challenge, it also affects road safety, education, livelihoods, families, and community well-being. Preventing substance abuse is therefore a shared responsibility.
On this day, we renew our commitment to empowering communities, preventing harm, and creating safer environments where every young person can thrive.

At Safe Strides Initiatives, our work is anchored on two critical pillars: substance abuse prevention and safe mobility, because the choices we make off the road directly impact the safety of our journeys.
This month, let us:
