The Guardian-Redeemer is a relative who, according to various laws of the country, has the privilege or responsibility to act on behalf of a relative who was in trouble, danger, or need. The Hebrew term (go el) for kinsman-redeemer designates one who delivers or rescues (Genesis 48:16; Exodus 6:6) or redeems property or person (Leviticus 27:9–25, 25:47–55).
The obligations of the goel include the duty to redeem the relative, friend, or person in need from modern-day slavery, if the latter had been obliged to sell himself/herself into serfdom (Leviticus 25: 48-49); to repurchase the property of a member who had had to sell it because of poverty; to fund legal processes of members; to mitigate or stop property grabbing for widows; and to seek restitution if the injured member had died (Numbers 5:8) and give it to the next of kin and family.
