Driver of Vaal scholar transport is 22, overloading confirmed, reports he was overtaking four vehicles — here is what we now know.

Authorities have now confirmed new details following the deadly scholar transport incident near Vanderbijlpark in the Vaal.

Police say the Toyota Quantum involved was overloaded, carrying 18 occupants, despite being certified to transport only 14.

The driver of the scholar transport has been identified as a 22-year-old male. He is hospitalised and will be formally questioned once medically cleared. Concerns have since emerged with information suggesting he did not hold a professional driving permit which is a PDP - this is yet to be confirmed by police.

Sources also indicate that the driver had previously been warned by other road users for unsafe driving behaviour. It is believed that he tried overtaking four cars, which caused the crash.

The truck driver survived but remains unconscious, while several learners continue to receive medical care.
The learners were from both public and private schools.

Investigations are still at an early stage.
Statements have been collected from witnesses, including the scholar transport driver, and the focus has now shifted to driver conduct, vehicle compliance, and licensing.

At the scene, the recovery process was marked by intense grief as families gathered while forensic teams worked to remove the young bodies.

Condolences have continued to pour in from across the country, as pressure mounts for stronger enforcement of scholar transport safety regulations.
