FERTILIZER APPLICATION TIPS

Irish potatoes require a balanced fertilizer program because the crop grows fast and forms tubers within a short period. Each fertilizer applied at a specific stage supports a different physiological process such as vegetative growth, tuber initiation, and bulking. The program you outlined follows the growth stages of potatoes.

1. 21 Days After Emergence – Application of Compound WMB

At around 21 days after emergence the potato crop is entering a strong vegetative growth stage. Leaves and stems are expanding rapidly and the plant is building the canopy that will later support tuber formation.

Compound WMB fertilizer usually contains a balanced combination of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) together with micronutrients such as magnesium and boron. These nutrients are critical at this stage.

Nitrogen supports rapid leaf and stem growth. A healthy canopy increases photosynthesis. More photosynthesis means more energy available for tuber formation later.

Phosphorus promotes strong root development. A well-developed root system allows the plant to absorb water and nutrients efficiently from the soil.

Potassium strengthens plant tissues and improves resistance to stress and diseases.

Sulphur plays several important roles in potato production.

It helps the plant produce proteins and enzymes that support healthy growth. It also improves chlorophyll formation, which increases the efficiency of photosynthesis.

Sulphur improves nitrogen utilization in the plant. When nitrogen and sulphur are balanced, the plant produces stronger foliage and better tuber formation.

RAIN FED IRISH POTATO TRAINING

INTRODUCTION FOR DAY ONE

This is the first lesson for your rain fed Irish potato training. The aim of this introduction is to help every member understand the crop, the climate needs, the soil needs, the risks, the opportunities, and the best planting window for rain fed Irish potatoes in Zambia. Everything is written in simple grammar so that even a complete beginner can follow without any problem.

Irish potatoes are one of the most profitable crops for both small scale farmers and medium scale farmers in Zambia. Many farmers believe that Irish potatoes can only grow well under irrigation. This is not true. Potatoes can also perform very well under rain fed conditions if you prepare early and follow the correct steps. Rain fed potatoes can give high yields when the planting time is correct, the field is prepared early, the seed is good quality, and the rainfall pattern is well understood.

Understanding the potato plant

Irish potatoes are root crops that grow under the soil. The part that we harvest and sell is called a tuber. The plant has a short growing period of about three to four months.
