A heartwarming tribute from the International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People💛
ASSITEJ SA celebrates the life and legacy of Athol Fugard, who left this world on 8 March 2025, but who has left behind so many memorable worlds through his words.
Athol Fugard was, without a doubt, a master wordsmith—his words cut through oppression like a blade, exposing the raw truth of apartheid South Africa. He did not just write plays; he built worlds where injustice was confronted head-on and where all the dimensions of humanity were explored. His commitment to fearless storytelling lifted a defiant middle finger to apartheid, ensuring that the voices of the unheard were projected onto the global stage.
His work brought South African stories centre-stage and made these stories palpably visible to the rest of the world; he became the first point of entry into the theatre for thousands of children and young people who encountered his plays in the classroom, and also, memorably, in theatres.
The news of his passing has sent waves of reflection through the theatre community. Fugard’s name, his deeply politicized works, and his relentless pursuit of justice will forever be interwoven with our country’s history. His departure this weekend, on the anniversary of a key turning point in South African theatre, feels almost poetic. It was during this very week in 1978 that the battle to liberate South African theatre was won—when racial segregation in theatres began to fall apart. It is as if the muses themselves scripted his final bow. It is also the same week that his My Children My Africa runs at the State Theatre. My Children! My Africa! was inspired by the struggles of young South Africans, urging them to choose education over violence. His work, time and again, centered the experiences of women, children, and educators, making him an ally in the fight for a just future. Through ASSITEJ SA, we honor his unwavering belief in the power of theatre to shape young minds, ignite change, and challenge systems of oppression.
His legacy is more than just scripts and performances; it is a testament to the power of theatre as a tool for resistance, transformation and healing. We know that generations of children and young people will come to an appreciation and understanding of theatre through his extraordinary works in the decades to come.
Rest well, Fugard. Your ink will never run dry.

When we started a few months ago, we knew that we wanted to give our students good exposure and a sense of the camera so that the students were well equipped in an audition space, but we also wanted them to walk away with other skills as well.
