SPRINGBOK REKORD — A desperate attempt by narcotics dealers to conceal physical evidence has been foiled after a specialized medical intervention confirmed they had swallowed illicit drug packages. The high-stakes arrest took place during the early hours of Monday, 21 September 2026, as part of a sweeping law enforcement crackdown across the Namakwa District.Members of the Springbok Public Order Policing (POPS) Unit intercepted the two male suspects, aged 24 and 28, during an intelligence-driven operation. Upon realizing they were cornered by law enforcement, the individuals quickly ingested their illegal stash in a bid to escape immediate prosecution.Vigilant officers processed the scene and swiftly transported both men to a local medical facility. Subsequent X-ray examinations ordered by detectives definitively confirmed the presence of distinct foreign objects lodged within the suspects' digestive tracts.Under the strict supervision of a licensed medical practitioner, the packages were safely retrieved. Forensic testing later verified the recovered substances as illegal narcotics, resulting in the immediate formalization of drug dealing charges against both suspects.According to a directive from Namakwa District Commissioner, Brigadier Schalk Andrews, the localized breakthrough formed part of a wider regional weekend enforcement initiative under Operation Shanela II, which yielded eight total drug-related arrests across the Northern Cape. The two men remain heavily detained in police custody ahead of their mandatory preliminary appearances before the Springbok Magistrate's Court.

SPRINGBOK REKORD, In a profession where courage is tested daily and the dangers facing police officers are ever-present, members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) gathered in Galeshewe on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, for the annual Northern Cape SAPS Provincial Prayer Day.
Held during , the service provided an opportunity for police management, members and stakeholders to come together in prayer, remembrance and reflection, while reaffirming their commitment to protecting communities and safeguarding those who serve.
The programme was directed by Chaplain Lesego Seturumane, with the service opening in prayer led by Archbishop Elisha Mofokeng.
A particularly solemn moment followed when Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, supported by the Frances Baard District Commissioner, Major General Gabathata Makgari and Chaplain Thusho Moseki, lit a candle in honour and remembrance of SAPS members who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The symbolic lighting of the candle served as a poignant reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by police officers in service to the people of South Africa, while highlighting the collective responsibility to strengthen police safety and ensure that every member returns home safely.
Welcoming attendees, the Frances Baard District Commissioner, Major General Makgari, acknowledged the importance of coming together as an organisation in prayer, particularly at a time when police safety remains a critical priority. She further reminded the congregation about the humanity behind every badge in the form of a colleague, a child, parent, spouse, sibling and member of the community, who place their lives and personal safety at risk every time they report for duty.
Major General Makgari highlighted that “our safety must never be separated from our values”, hence members must remain committed to professional, ethical, disciplined and responsive policing, while having the courage to confront criminality with the wisdom to conduct themselves in a manner that strengthens public confidence in the SAPS.
Chaplain Ntshavheni Mudau elaborated on the purpose of the annual Prayer Day, explaining that it provides an important spiritual platform to pray for the protection, safety and well-being of SAPS members as they fulfil their demanding responsibilities.
The congregation was subsequently led in a series of intercessory prayers by ministers from the provincial Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) component. The prayers addressed matters affecting both the organisation and its members, including Police Management, mental health and well-being, police killings, Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), and ethical policing.
The spiritual heart of the service was the powerful sermon delivered by Reverend Oliver Mothelesi, based on Matthew 10:16:
“I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.”
The scripture resonated strongly with the theme of the service “Smart and Tactical Policing without Fear”, and the realities confronting police officers, calling for a balance between courage and wisdom, vigilance and integrity, tactical awareness and compassion.
Delivering the keynote address, Lieutenant General Otola emphasised that policing requires members to be courageous, but that courage must be accompanied by intelligence, tactical awareness, discipline and sound judgement.
Under the theme “Smart and Tactical Policing without Fear”, the Provincial Commissioner encouraged members to approach the policing environment with confidence, preparedness and strategic thinking, while remaining firmly grounded in the values and ethical principles of the SAPS.
In closing her address, the Provincial Commissioner called on all members of the South African Police Service to reset their commitment to Integrity, Accountability, Professionalism and Service as we continue to give practical expression to the SAPS Reset Agenda. Furthermore, she also called on members to be vigilant and tactical, to use their training, available intelligence and to trust their colleagues; never to act without thinking, to protect themselves and those serving beside them. Members were cautioned to never allow fear to compromise their ability to serve, but equally never to allow their confidence to become reckless.
“Be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. That is the balance we are called upon to achieve,” said Lt Gen Otola.
The station commander of Kimberley SAPS, Brigadier Nicolas Mtongana, thanked every stakeholder and member for the roles they played in organising the service and the management of the Galeshewe Assembly of God Church for opening the doors of their premises to the SAPS.
