Imagine a world where communities thrive independently, creating lasting change through a deep connection to nature. That's our mission.

UkwandaGro is dedicated to fighting hunger, poverty, and unemployment in South Africa by creating lasting food gardens. Our goal is to support people in overcoming mental health challenges through our healing gardening programs. We work with communities to use local resources and wisdom to enhance food security, boost nutrition, stimulate economic development, and enhance mental well-being through collaborations.

Gardening teaches us that nothing blooms year-round. Some seasons bring heavy storms, scorched soil, and pests, making you wonder if the seeds you planted will ever break through—or if you're just a "hope-fool" for believing they will.

In South Africa, there is roughly 1 non-profit for every 218 people. That is an incredible amount of heart, but it also means thousands of isolated causes trying to fix problems that unified communities should be solving together. We keep planting in separate pots when we really need a shared garden.

Why staying a "hope-fool" is worth it:

Growth happens in the dark: Just because you can't see the sprout doesn't mean the seed is dead.

Density creates protection: A solitary stem snaps in a storm, but a tangled, interconnected garden shelters itself.

Hope is a practice, not a feeling: It’s putting your hands in the dirt every day, trusting that small actions compound into real impact.

Are you feeling the fatigue in your own patch lately, or are you seeing seeds of unity starting to sprout? Drop your thoughts below—let's cultivate this conversation together.

What a weekend! If you missed Saturday’s Garden Walk & Seed Workshop at , you missed pure magic. 🌱✨

Glyniss lived up to every bit of her reputation. Her deep wealth of knowledge and generosity in sharing it left everyone inspired, grounded, and ready to plant with purpose.

Highlights from the day:

Hands-on Seed Saving: We broke down practical techniques to save open-pollinated seeds and build local garden resilience.

Permaculture in Action: Walking the homestead showed us what happens when a vision for regenerative soil comes to life.

Rooted Connection: Gathering with a community of growers who care about healing people and the planet.

The biggest takeaway from Saturday? Growth starts the moment you decide to nurture the soil beneath your feet.

🌱 Missed out or want the workshop notes?
We put together a quick recap of Glynis’s top seed-saving tips and key permaculture takeaways.

The Pests We Carry 🌱

Lately, I’ve been thinking about pests—not just the ones that find their way into our gardens, but the ones that find their way into our minds.

Old beliefs that no longer serve us.
Past mistakes we keep replaying.
Failures we’ve carried long after the lesson was learned.
Fear, doubt, guilt… little “aphids” quietly eating away at the things we’re trying to grow. 🌿

And just like in the garden, sometimes we reach for the strongest thing we can find to get rid of them.

But what if the answer is sometimes more natural?

In the garden, we can interplant, use herbs and flowers as natural deterrents, pull out the weeds by hand, and choose gentle solutions that work with nature rather than against it.

And perhaps our minds need a little of the same.

For me, that has meant returning to faith, grace, forgiveness and letting go—learning that I don’t have to keep feeding yesterday’s mistakes just because they happened.

Sometimes we don’t need to poison the whole garden to deal with a few pests. 🌱

Sometimes we need to change what we’re planting, remove what no longer belongs, and give the good things room to grow.

🌿 Swipe through our Natural Pest Control Guide for your garden—and perhaps take a moment to consider what “pests” you might be ready to let go of in your own life.

Grow naturally. Grow intentionally. Grow with grace. 💚

Sun-warmed skin, birds singing above, and my laptop open in the garden. Today is a reminder of how blessed we are by simple winter sunshine. 🌸💻

Pushing a vision forward and building something new isn't always easy. Yet in the quiet space of creation and nature, I realise that we don't always need to force progress—sometimes, simply being present brings the clarity we're looking for.

Finding peace in His presence today. How are you connecting with God in your day? 🌱🙏

Today is a beautiful day in Cape Town. ☀️

Warm, bright and certainly not what we normally expect from a winter’s day in the Western Cape.

Spending time in the garden reminded me that even when things appear quiet on the surface, there is always something happening beneath it.

I think the same is true for UkwandaGro.

We are still in the early stages of growing our vision for therapeutic horticulture and community healing through nature. There is still so much to build, learn and bring to life.

But just like a garden, growth doesn't always happen where we can immediately see it.

Every person who follows our journey, shares our work, purchases a product, opens a conversation or supports our mission helps us take another step forward.

So today, I'm grateful for the growth we can see — and perhaps even more grateful for the growth we can't.

Thank you for growing alongside us. 🌱

Gardens, growth, sharing, and connection—this is how we fill our cup. 💚☕🌱

Spent a wonderful morning with The Hottentots Holland Garden Club at the United Church in Somerset West! We were swept away on a kaleidoscope of color and awe thanks to guest speaker Christie Fourie. 🎨🌷

Christie (pictured above) is a retired school principal and seasoned traveler who has visited 31 countries! He recently returned from an epic 5,700 km trip through Holland, France, and Belgium, and sharing his photos of European gardens was pure inspiration. 📸✨

There’s nothing quite like gathering with fellow nature lovers to admire the world’s beauty and spark new inspiration for our own backyards.

"We all have a responsibility to learn how to live and develop sustainably in a world of finite resources." 🌍✨

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the state of the planet, but real change starts when we take responsibility for our immediate surroundings. Living sustainably isn't about perfection—it's about learning, adapting, and making intentional choices every day.

At Ukwanda Gro NPC, our mission is to transform urban spaces into productive, local food hubs. In a world where people feel disconnected, healing begins when we reconnect—to land, soil, and soul—building stronger futures, one seed, one garden, and one community at a time. 🌱

We believe that with the right tools and knowledge, everyone can play a part in protecting our planet’s future.

Let’s build a lighter, more resilient footprint together. 💚
