Your body is designed to move.

This is a wonderful movement called Forward Stretch in Pilates. The hamstrings are lengthening, the belly muscles are increasing the length of the spine, and the back muscles are engaging.

It has taken me years to uncover what my body can do. And now that I am 50, I am stronger and I enjoy exercising more than I did when I was much younger.

Your body is far more capable of what you think it can achieve.

Your are welcome to come and join the warm environment of my Pilates studio and discover the beauty of movement.

This is a hardworking client of mine that has set his shoulder blades in a beautiful position on his back, the blade should not have any pronounced edges. His pelvic floor and belly muscles are working hard to keep the length in his lower back. The more he strengthens this area around the blades, the better the posture. The work in the belly area also helps to increase the length of the spine which again improves posture and improves the blade position.

Our bodies are wonderfully made!!

These wonderful clients of mine have been coming to to my classes for over 3 years. There is a little ball under their sacrum to help them hold their legs in a vertical position, the stomach muscle and quads are firing. Doing any form of exercise takes discipline and commitment, our bodies if they are loaded a little bit more on a weekly basis will get stronger, but if the exercises are kept at a certain level your body will only maintain that strength and flexibility.

Hamstring stretches look so easy to do, there is a lot going on in the exercise, to protect yourself during the stretch especially the space behind the knee (popliteal). I encourage engagement of the front of the thigh, pulling the knee up towards the hip. The band is not to be hang on to if you remove the band the leg muscles should hold the leg up.

I love variety in my Pilates classes. This is an interesting variation of the age old plank, plank is a wonderful exercise to work those elusive core muscles. So much is going on in this combination of exercises, the back is stretched when touching your toes, the arms are strengthened and the flexibility is regained to return to a standing position. Most of us did this as a child, it is possible to regain the ease of movement in our bodies, it requires a bit of work on a frequent basis.

Beginner's Male Pilates Class on a Tuesday at 9h00.
The class will teach a basic understanding of Pilates - it will centre around core exercises to build a strong base , if you stay in the class longer than 6 months you will definitely be stronger and more flexible. It is a wonderful way to enjoy exercise and have fun. The classes are never boring as my clients mention to me. You will be not only be gaining strength and flexibility but a deeper understanding of how YOUR body moves.

My desire for everyone is to look after their feet. When a client stands before me I usually create awareness around their feet.

Is weight being placed evenly between the two feet?

Is each foot distributing the weight equally?

Are they creating an arch?

There are so many muscles in our feet that can make them point and flex, and you might notice that if you point your feet like a ballet dancer, your feet will cramp. This could be a lack of magnesium, or you seldom point your feet.

There are many exercises to build up the strength and suppleness in the foot and around the foot.

Spend time loving your feet, they are important.

Come and see me for a free assessment of your feet.

Yesterday, I was passing by some ladies enjoying Zumba.

There are so many forms of exercise.

Pilates, is a controlled process that requires thought.

My passion is to help my clients develop awareness of their alignment, posture, and overall well-being.

I am sure there are many people who have viewed this clip and are thinking I wish I could be so supple. Flexibility can be developed. There are people that are more supple than others, it doesn’t mean that you cannot improve your flexibility. Flexibility takes time and possible years to develop. I remember as a child I couldn't touch my toes even though I joined a dancing class twice a week. It was only in my 30’s that I could touch my toes, and now 3 months to 50 I can put my head on my knees. Each person is different and their bodies are different, and your body will take you where you need to go, if you put in the effort.

I am starting a flexibility training class. Phone me if you want more details. Vanessa 084 5512356.

Holiday time in Joburg. I hadn't seen my family for a while due to Covid so it is lovely spending time with them. My brother and I love to get together, and spend a little time together on our heads.

Happy New Year! My classes for 2022 have begun. I am loving the enthusiasm people show for movement in my classes. It is a joy for me to teach all of my clients. If you are keen to experience one of my classes you are so welcome to join. The first class will be free. I have various classes through out the day and the week. Due to Covid I have to keep the classes small and so it would be wonderful if you contact me and see where I can fit you in for a free session.

When we look at someone’s posture and movement we are looking at the end of a life lived, the shape of a life woven into the fabric of their muscles ligaments and bones. To say their posture is bad or wrong is a mi- reading of the situation and only shames the person. Every knot in a muscle, every bend of the spine has a story and the story is far more interesting than the shape of the body. - Donna Farhi.

I have recently been reviewing with my clients - the basics of Pilates: - core, pelvic placement, and breathing. These topics are the fundamentals of Pilates.

The area I would like to concentrate on today is the pelvic floor, one of the core muscles.

How do I ensure my clients understand their connection to their pelvic floor? It is as simple as this.

1. Create understanding: Show pictures of the pelvic floor and where it resides.

2. Build a neural pathway: Prevent yourself from urinating or another word we use in South Africa for this is “knyping”. Concentrate on this for a few minutes or take a few days to discover this.
3. Lie on your back with a ball between the knees. Squeeze the ball. The inner thighs stimulate a strong engagement of the pelvic floor.

4. Try No 2 again for a few moments.
Then return to squeezing the ball and lifting the pelvic floor.

Is it easier to access the pelvic floor with the ball or without the ball?

Catching a beautiful position in movement is immensely pleasing for me. In a great class this morning, I caught my client doing this. This exercise, downward dog is used in Pilates and Yoga. I am the woman on the right taking the pic and my client is on the left of me, she is in blue. I love how she is extending her spine and her working her legs, making a gorgeous pyramid shape, exactly what I enjoy to see.

Crazy times!

When 2020 arrived I would have never expected to be:

Stuck at home, and not allowed to leave my house.
Teaching Pilates only through a computer screen.
Teaching more than 8 people in a one-hour session, while I am explaining and demonstrating each movement and my clients aren't visible.
And actually enjoying it and my clients are enjoying it. I have even got more clients because of it. Strange times.

As the scare of Covid 19 arrived a few weeks ago, I moved my clients to the muncipal owned area outside my house. There are holes in the ground, as we overran with dune moles. We were laughing as our bums were neatly placed in a hole each, making it very difficult to show off our Pilates to the Firemen running up and down the street. (the pics are of us doing Pilates outside my house.)

We decided to move it to the Village Green overlooking our beautiful estuary, we did a few sessions there. Though one client had neatly placed her mat near some lovely dog poo.

With all the changes. Life goes on with Pilates.

We started at 8am this morning. My clients are doing a few warm up exercises before we get into stronger exercises.

This was a fun exercise I incorporated in a class. Please take note that the lateral muscles are in use when flowing your torso from one side to the other. Some people might think it is hard.

Happy New Year!

I wonder if you are one of these people that set fitness goals for the new year. BJ Fogg, a Behavioural Scientist from Stanford University mentions that an effective way to start a new routine is to only start with 30 seconds.

This reminded me of a story I heard years ago that has stayed with me.

A woman wanted to start exercising.

Every morning for a week she put on her exercise clothes. And then she took them off. She completed her day as normal.

The week come to an end and the next day she got up, put on her exercise clothes and got into her car. She opened her car door and walked back to her house, removed her exercise clothes. She completed her day as normal. And did this for a week.

The following week she put her exercise clothes on, got into her car drove to the gym. Turned the car around drove home. She completed this task for a week.

The following week, she put on her exercise clothes, got into her car, drove to the gym, got out walked through the doors of the gym and went home. She completed this routine for a week.

The following week she put on her exercise clothes, got in her car, drove to the gym, walked through the doors of the gym and got onto an exercise bike cycled for 5 minutes and went home. She completed this for a week.

The following week she got up, put on her exercise clothes, go into her car, drove to the gym, walked through the doors and did her 5 minutes on the bike and then completed another 5 minutes.

And this is how she continued until she had developed a full workout that lasted an hour.

The goal become a lifetime habit.

So if you ever feel like you are battling to start a good habit this is a wonderful way to start one.

Have a wonderful New Year.

Here are a few sidework exercises on strengthening the obliques. Let me know how it goes?

24/08/2018

I do love - One Leg Circles. The leg needs freedom in the hip to
create the movement of a pendulum. The pelvis and the contracted leg
laying on the floor is allowing the leg to swirl. If the leg can’t
extend, bend the knee, but be mindful that the goal is to extend the
leg. Enjoy creating freedom in the hips which in turn, releases
tension in the back.

Hip work on the Reformer

The feeling of ease in our hips is lost so easily the older we get. To pick up a pencil off the floor or to sit on our haunches while we look deeply into our our children or grandchildren's eyes, is the reason why we need to keep doing exercises that will strengthen and maintain suppleness around our hips.

Joseph Pilates said "If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old. If it is completely flexible at 60, you are young."

Each part of a bicycle chain needs to be mobile, as each vertebra needs to be independently mobile. Try and experiment with this exercise. Work from your tail bone to the crown of your head, visualising the separation of each vertebra. Try it daily. You might see changes quicker than you realise. Remember if you feel pain stop! Your body is telling you to be gentle.

Hamstrings! Long hamstrings place less tension on our spines when we seated. Some of us take longer than others to stretch out the hamstrings. Lots of daily or weekly practise.

I would never have thought that I would have found such joy in waking up early so I can spend time on perfecting Pilates movements.

Usually I am just thinking about what can I improve in the movement, today was different I was thinking of writing a post and wondering if these pictures are suitable.

These early morning jaunts has made me think about other areas of my life that I need to organise.

I do start with my slippers on and jerseys, I really don't like being cold.

Now I go and wake up the family, that hasn't woken up yet. Enjoy your day.

Great pleasure is found in watching the progress of my clients. I am demonstrating an exercise, which a lovely client of mine successfully accomplished this morning. This particular client is a new client, and already I have noticed her body alignment improving, her mind connecting to the correct muscles in the movement, and what pleases me the most the enthusiasm she has for Pilates. I am absolutely blessed loving what I teach.

The overuse of the spine is a major reason for back pain. The more supple the hips, the more balanced the muscles, which prevents over stressing the back.

Class times are as follows:
Monday: Novice 8am and 5 30pm. Intermediate 9am
Tuesday: Intermediate 8 15am
Thursday: Intermediate 8am
Friday: Novice 8 30am

Private lessons on request.

08/03/2018

The benefits of this flowing sequence, is centered around the strength in the belly, and the back muscles. Two areas that build a strong spine. Joseph Pilates said "You are only as young as your spine is flexible."

Times for group classes:
Monday 9am Novice class
Monday 5:30pm Novice
Tuesday 9 am Intermediate
Thursday 8am Intermediate
Thursday 9am Novice

Private lessons available (reformer and wunda chair included).

Congratulations to these girls, who today progressed from the Novice class to the Intermediate class. I am super proud of the way you progressed in less than 6 months. This just shows how quickly strength can be built with Pure Pilates.

There are now new openings for a new Novice class on Thursday's at 9 am. The Intermediate class will be at 8am on Thursday.
