Wearable Active Lighting Technology

#IlluminateYourWorld

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฑ Letโ€™s meet in Poland!

Weโ€™re heading to the New Mobility Congress in Katowice, September 22โ€“23, to talk about where active lighting fits into the future of mobility โ€” from personal safety gear people wear every day, to prams parents push through the city at dusk, to wheelchairs and scooters navigating traffic after dark.

Wherever someone is moving through a city and needs to be seen โ€” not just when a headlight happens to catch them right, but from every side, in every kind of weather โ€” thatโ€™s where SUNFIBRE comes in.

If youโ€™re around, letโ€™s grab a moment to talk. Drop us a message and weโ€™ll find a time.

This weekend you can find our technology at Czech Design Week in Prague โ€” at the booth of the brilliant brand MOD ๐ŸŽจ

MOD uses our SUNFIBREยฎ as a component in their bags and accessories. Optical fiber that doesn't just reflect light โ€” it emits its own, in every direction, so visibility isn't a question of catching the right beam at the right angle. The fiber and its textile casing are built to handle rain, washing, and everyday wear, it's simple to operate, and it recharges from any powerbank.

This is exactly where SUNFIBRE shines: a component that lets designers bring style and visibility together, without compromise.

Thanks to MOD for the great collaboration โ€” come see it in action! ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒ Fresh news from Africa! ๐Ÿ†

We are celebrating again!

At this year's Electra Mining Africa 2026, we teamed up with Soteria TechWear Solutions to win the Innovation & New Product Award โ€” this time for the rescue rope, a smart safety rope with lighting from SUNFIBREยฎ.

And it's no coincidence. We're building on last edition, when Equiray & Soteria TechWear Solutions also took 2nd place in the same category.
Two years, two award-winning entries โ€” proof that developing wearable safety technology for mining and industry is heading in the right direction,

Huge thanks to the whole team behind the rescue rope, and to the organisers at Electra Mining Africa and the SA Capital Equipment Export Council for the recognition.
We can't wait to share more about the product with you soon and show it in action! ๐Ÿš€

Onwards for Soteria TechWear Solutions and SUNFIBRE โ€” the light (and the rope) at the end of the tunnel is shining brighter than ever. ๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿง—

You can find our technology at Czech Design Week - International Design Festival in Prague, 10โ€“13 September.

We won't have our own stand this round.

Instead, SUNFIBRE is riding along on someone else's: ๐— ๐—ข๐——, a young Czech brand making hip bags and backpacks built for actually moving through a city โ€” or out of one, into the woods. Two guys who design and sew every piece themselves, no factory behind them, just their own hands and a lot of hours.

They chose our fiber as a component for their gear, and

Four separate functions decide what a worker wears: safety, procurement, the garment manufacturer, and the laundry. None of them is asking the same question.

โ— It took us a while to learn that a convincing answer to one is worth almost nothing to the other three. So here are all four.

โ–ถ๏ธ Safety asks: is it defensible? โ—€๏ธ

Tests at BTTG in the UK confirmed that SUNFIBRE technology can be integrated into clothing certified to EN 469, the European standard for firefighters' protective clothing. Anti-static performance is assessed to SANS (IEC) 60079-0 and 60079-11, for environments sensitive to static electricity. IP68, with testing to 3 metres depth for up to two hours. Production is certified to ISO 9001:2015.

โ–ถ๏ธ Procurement asks: what does this do to my supplier list? โ—€๏ธ

Nothing. We are a component, not a garment. The buyer keeps purchasing from the workwear supplier they already have under contract โ€” no new vendor, no new tender, no new approval process. And because the number that matters is cost per wear rather than unit price, durability is where most of our engineering time goes.

โ–ถ๏ธ The garment manufacturer asks: does this reopen my dossier? โ—€๏ธ

This is the question we get first and the one we have worked on hardest. Minimum bend radius, seam routing, connector placement, power draw โ€” all specified up front, so it integrates into a platform you already tool for. And you don't have to become an electronics company: the driver and battery modules are standardised and sourced from specialists.

โ–ถ๏ธ The laundry asks: will it survive my tunnel? โ—€๏ธ

The battery always comes off. A power bank doesn't belong in a wash and shouldn't have to be. What stays in the garment is the fibre itself, and that can be sewn permanently into the textile and washed with it. So for the laundry this is one step, not a disassembly: take off the power source, wash as normal. It also means the battery is removable by design, which is what the requirement applying to portable batteries from February 2027 asks for.

Everyone in this chain wants something different, and we try to meet all of it.

One week to Electra Mining Africa, and what we actually want out of it isn't just eyes on the stand.

It's conversations with the people who'd wear this, inspect it, or write it into a procurement spec โ€” because the product gets better the more of those conversations we have, not less.
We'd rather leave Johannesburg with a list of hard questions from the field than a pile of business cards.

For the mining segment specifically, that translates into a few concrete things: hi-vis PPE that stays legible without depending on someone else's beam finding it first, and โ€” the part we're still building out carefully rather than overselling โ€” a case for how this fits into rescue and emergency response, where ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฎ ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€.

We're not a mining company and we don't pretend to be โ€” we're a materials and lighting technology partner, working through Soteria Advanced Technologies (Pty) Ltd for the South African market, with real certification work behind us and real open questions still ahead, on regulation in particular.

Find us at Electra Mining Africa, 7 to 11 September in Johannesburg.

โ€œBut it already has reflective strips.โ€

Reflective materials only work if thereโ€™s a light source nearby to bounce off โ€” headlights, floodlights, a torch. Take that away โ€” fog on the apron, dust underground, a bend in a rural road at night โ€” and reflective tape goes dark.

SUNFIBREยฎ Active Lighting Technology doesnโ€™t reflect light. It generates it, through optical fibers woven into the fabric, visible 360ยฐ up to 3 km away, in any weather.

Same vest. Same job. A completely different level of visibility when it matters most.

Photos from SUNFIBRE's post 20/08/2026

Most people have never heard of wearable active lighting.

That's exactly the point.

We're not improving an existing product. We're creating an entirely new category.

So how do you put light into a fabric that can survive washing, bending, abrasion, and years of daily use?

At SUNFIBREยฎ, we use side-emitting optical fibres that emit light along their entire length. By encapsulating them in a durable textile coating, the fibres can be sewn directly into garments using standard industrial sewing machines.
No special equipment.
No complex production changes.
The fibre behaves like a textile threadโ€”flexible, durable, and washableโ€”while a compact rechargeable controller powers the entire illuminated element.
For manufacturers, this means integrating active lighting into existing products without redesigning the production process.

But something interesting has happened along the way.
When we started SUNFIBREยฎ, we thought wearable active lighting would be used mainly in clothing. Today, we're seeing opportunities far beyond garmentsโ€”from industrial PPE and emergency response to aviation, mining, maritime applications, and defence.

The photos in this post show some of our early prototypes and first applications. Since then, both the technology and the range of use cases have evolved significantlyโ€”and we're only getting started.

17/08/2026

Visibility you don't have to borrow.

SUNFIBRE builds active lighting directly into textile โ€” optical fibre that emits along its full length, so a person stays visible in dust, smoke and total darkness, without depending on anyone else's light source.

Come see it in action. ๐Ÿ‘ท
