Presidential candidate of the NDC, Peter Obi, has triggered fresh political speculation after declaring that Oyo State Governor and APM presidential candidate, Seyi Makinde, is qualified to become Nigeria’s president.

Obi said: “We have a candidate who is contesting for president, my dear brother Makinde. Is he qualified to be president? Yes, he is qualified.”

The development comes after Obi attended the inauguration of Makinde’s APM presidential campaign office in Abuja, fuelling speculation that the former Anambra governor could be preparing to step down from the 2027 presidential race in favour of Makinde in the coming weeks.

A PERFECT TIME FOR PETER OBI TO TELL THE PEOPLE OF ANAMBRA STATE WHAT HAPPENED TO THE $30.32 MILLION IN EXTERNAL DEBT RECORDED AGAINST THE STATE UNDER HIS WATCH.

The Debt Management Office recorded $30,323,574.40 in external debt for Anambra State as at 31 December 2013, alongside ₦3.025 billion in domestic debt.

Peter Obi was still Governor of Anambra State at the time.

So the question is simple.

WHAT WAS THE $30.32 MILLION BORROWED FOR?

Which projects did it finance?

When was the facility obtained?

How much was actually disbursed?

Who authorised it?

And what was the outstanding obligation when Peter Obi handed over to Willie Obiano on 17 March 2014?

These are not unreasonable questions.

They are questions of public accountability and stewardship of public funds.

Peter Obi has built a substantial part of his political reputation around fiscal prudence, financial discipline and responsible management of public resources.

That reputation makes scrutiny even more necessary.

The 2027 Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has vowed to constitute an Independent Team of Experts, to trace the ₦33.75 billion reportedly paid to 3.29 million vulnerable Nigerian households by the President Bola Tinubu Federal Government, after an audit report raised questions over whether the money actually reached its intended beneficiaries.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, on Saturday night, Atiku said that the audit findings amounted to a devastating indictment of a government that removed fuel subsidy, increased taxes and tariffs, and promised support to the poor, but failed to deliver.

The Auditor-General’s report flagged the ₦33.75 billon cash transfers to 3.29 million unverified beneficiaries, noting that, records presented to Auditors were inadequate to authenticate the payments and determine whether the recipients were genuine.

Atiku noted also, that the figures expose the inadequacy of the intervention, noting that, ₦33.75 billion divided among 3.29 million households amounts to barely ₦10,258 per household.

His exact words: "This is beyond a bookkeeping scandal. The intervention is insult!ngly small, yet even that small amount cannot be cleanly accounted for. If money meant for hungry Nigerians cannot be satisfactorily traced, while access to records required for accountability is frustrated, then what we are witnessing is unapologetic w!ckedness against the poor. You cannot punish people with hardship and then play hide-and-seek with money appropriated in their name."

The ADC Presidential Candidate therefore, challenged the President Tinubu administration to reconcile conflicting figures concerning the number of households reached under its expanded Cash Transfer Programme.

Atiku called on the government to publish detailed payment records showing verified beneficiary households, payment tranches, State-by-State disbursements, failed transactions and reversals, to show transparency.

The Auditor-General’s recommendations now place responsibility on the National Cash Transfer Office, to provide evidence supporting the disbursements, or where the funds cannot be satisfactorily accounted for, recover and remit the money to the Treasury.

Atiku further criticised President Tinubu's administration’s broader approach to poverty, arguing that, Cash Transfers can only provide temporary relief, without addressing rising fuel, transportation, food and medicine costs.

"A name on a Social Register is not a Bank alert", he said; insisting that the government must distinguish between households listed on a database and those that actually received funds.

"If N600 billion truly moved, then government must show the trail", Atiku stated; maintaining that Nigerians deserved transparency and independent verification of the funds reportedly disbursed by the President Tinubu Federal Government.
