As the colder weather settles in, many households are turning to gas heaters, fireplaces, and alternative heating methods to stay warm. While these can be very effective, they also increase the risk of fires and dangerous fumes if not used correctly.

Here are a few important reminders to help keep your family safe this winter:

🛢️ USING GAS HEATERS SAFELY

• Fresh air is essential. Always allow some airflow into the room when using a gas heater. Even a slightly open window can make a big difference.

• Inspect your equipment regularly. Check gas hoses, connections, and fittings for signs of wear and tear, and have your heater serviced if anything looks damaged.

• Position gas cylinders correctly. Cylinders should remain upright and be stored in a cool area with good ventilation.

• Keep heaters stable and clear of obstacles. Avoid placing them where they can be bumped over or where children and pets frequently play.

• Never drape clothing, blankets, or towels over a heater to dry.

🔥 FIREPLACE SAFETY

• Before winter arrives, have your chimney checked and cleaned to ensure it is free from blockages and excessive soot build-up.

• Always use a fireplace screen or guard to contain sparks and hot embers.

• Only burn suitable firewood. Materials such as plastics, packaging, or treated timber can create dangerous fumes and increase fire risk.

• Remember that ashes can remain hot for many hours. Dispose of them carefully in a metal container and keep them away from combustible materials.

• Do not leave a fire burning unattended, particularly overnight.

🚨 EXTRA SAFETY DURING WINTER AND LOAD-SHEDDING

• Maintain a safe distance between heat sources and items such as curtains, couches, bedding, rugs, and other household furnishings.

• If using candles during power outages, place them on stable surfaces away from anything that could catch alight and extinguish them when leaving the room.

• Ensure smoke alarms are installed and functioning correctly throughout your home.
