Every child deserves access to books.

In South Africa, we cannot talk about improving literacy without talking about access.

For many families, books are a luxury. Yet the foundations for literacy are built long before a child enters Grade 1.

And this is where ECD practitioners, parents, communities and funders all have a role to play.

When we put books into children's homes and ECD centres, we are not simply giving children something to read. We are giving them:

- Vocabulary
- Imagination
- Language and communication
- Curiosity
- A foundation for learning
- Opportunities for connection with their parents

And parents don't need to be teachers to make a difference. 10 minutes of reading together every day can change a child's relationship with books and learning.

Read a story. Talk about the pictures. Ask questions. Let your child tell you what they think will happen next. Read the same favourite book again—and again!

Because literacy doesn't begin when a child learns to decode words. It begins when a child learns that books are interesting, stories matter, and reading is something we do together.

So, to our ECD practitioners: make books visible and accessible.

To our parents: read to your children every day.

And to our funders and partners: invest in books, libraries and family literacy—not just classrooms.

If we want children to become readers, we must first make sure they have something to read.

There is no shortage of credible research that highlights the incredibly vital role that father's play in the lives of their children, but how often does it form part of the conversations that we have in our daily lives.
We all love to be affirmed in the roles that we play at work, in our community and at home, so let us make an effort to affirm the father's role in our conversations around the dinner table, the braai, at church and everywhere we go.
Mothers, celebrate the impact that your children's father has on your children.
Let us create opportunities for fathers to play an active role in parenting at home.
Let us create space for fathers to interact with our children in a way that comes naturally to them.
Let us encourage that precious bond between father and child and let go of our need to control every situation.

What you feed your children is one of the most challenging aspects of parenting! And one of the most crucial. Your child’s brain is growing every single day — and what goes into their body helps shape that growth.

Food is not only fuel for the body. It affects concentration, emotional regulation, energy levels, sleep, learning, and behaviour. A child who is constantly overloaded with sugar, processed foods, and artificial additives may struggle to focus, stay calm, or regulate emotions.

Healthy nutrition helps build healthy brains, balanced behaviour, stronger immunity, and better learning outcomes.

Every snack, every meal, every lunchbox is an opportunity to nourish not only a growing body, but a growing mind.

Yesterday, we celebrated the women whose work is often unseen, uninterrupted, and deeply life-shaping — mothers.

To every mother balancing work, home, caregiving, teaching, comforting, and guiding: your work matters more than words can fully express. The consistency you provide today becomes the strength your children carry tomorrow.

Happy Mother’s Day to the women raising, nurturing, protecting, and loving the next generation. 💛
