Happy Freedom Day

The Black Lawyers Association (BLA) is a voluntary association of black lawyers in South Africa. It co-exists with statutory bodies governing the legal profession.

The BLA was formed in the 1970’s for the purpose of resisting prosecution of black lawyers who practised law in the Central Business Districts (CBD) of the so-called white towns. No black lawyer was allowed to practise his or her craft in these towns as this contravened the famous Group Areas Act No.35 of 1966, a mean piece of legislation that regulated where South Africans should live and work. A new morning of a new week with a new set of possibilities. As we usher into Alert Level 2, here’s another motivational video to keep us hoping for better days✨

[08/15/20]   Att: Law students

Revolutionary Greetings

We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided.

After receiving numerous queries and concerns with regards to the treatment of Pathway 2 students contrary to what was the norm in Pathway 1, one of the many issues that stood out was the falling away of test marks (prior to lockdown) for Pathway 2 students. And the capping of 3rd opportunity marks to 50% for 1st-time attempt Pathway 2 students.

This does not speak unto the experience in Pathway 1 in the event that they attempt their third opportunity in Pathway 2.

We then engaged on these issues with the faculty as we felt that these were the most pertinent issues at hand. After robust and thorough engagement with the faculty, the resolution was that students who feel adversely affected by this should appeal the matter.

We, therefore, call on all students who are affected by this to contact student leaders on the numbers at the end of the statement by the latest Sunday 16 August 11:00 am. We request active participation as we try to resolve this matter.

We wish you well as you continue with your studies.

"When we talk as one, violence against women comes out from behind closed doors. Violence against women and girls in most societies goes unrecgonized and unreported because we are afraid to communicate about it. Violence against women is a public issue and it is a public concern that affects all segments of society." -Agnes M Fallah Kamara

As the Black Lawyers Association Student Chapter (BLAsc) we hosted a dialogue on, 'Gender Based Violence and Femicide in the South African Legal Context,' on Friday the 17 July 2020.

A detailed contribution was made by both our speakers, Ms Vuyo Ngcofe and Adv. Dumisani Apollos. Our attendees raised significant questions that impacted our attendees and shifted our perspective on this serious issue of GBV.

As BLAsc we would like to appreciate both our speakers for bracing our event and making it the success it was. Equally, we appreciate our attendees for affording us their time to come listen to the said speakers.

As BLAsc we would like to wish the founding President of our democracy a happy birthday.

As a nation we remain forever indebted to this fallen soldier and august leader. It is, therefore, trite for us as an organisation to appreciate this leader and challenge everyone who believes in the contribution of our beloved Tata, to join us in wishing him a happy birthday.

We challenge everyone who celebrates Tata Mandela's birthday, to use this day for good gesture, to impact people around them in whatever way they can.

As BLAsc, we say Happy Birthday Tata.
