A STUDY ON THE SOUTHERNMOST FREE ROAMING ELEPHANT | A year-long University study was conducted on Gondwana Game Reserve to collect data on the seasonal foraging behaviour and preferences of elephant in a Cape Fynbos biome. Gondwana’s elephant are the first free roaming elephant in the Southern Cape in over 200 years. The research reveals that instinctively elephant forage in this Cape Floristic Kingdom environment in a non-destructive way and feed on different types of vegetation in different seasons which instils a balance and compliments the natural cycles of nature.
.
The study was conducted by Cameron Scott as part of his Nature Conservation degree. Cameron is a member of Gondwana’s Conservation Department.

SASCO is the biggest student movement in Africa. It organizes students in institutions of higher learning striving for transformation... This is the official page of SASCO; Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

The South African Student Congress (SASCO) was formed in September 1991 at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, through the merger of the South African National Student Congress (SANSCO) and the National Union of South African Students (NUSAS). The predecessor of SANSCO, the Azanian Students Organisation (AZASO) was initially formed in 1979 as a continuation of the South African Student

"NO BREAD, NO BREAD, NO BREAD!!"
09/11/2021

SASCO Nelson Mandela University is shocked by the poor care and attention the Nelson Mandela University has invested towards students of the university. The university has continued to show that they do not give a damn whether the process of ensuring that students are constantly in a conducive environment for them to perform to the best of their academic ability is ensured.

In this time whereby, students are faced with a possible ‘new normal’ of online learning and a life under a global pandemic which has necessitated a life of ‘Lockdowns’, the expectation is that the university would make use of this particular period in time to curb some of the class contradictions the pandemic has sharpened and also ensure that students are adjusting adequately to the new challenges such a period would present to them. Issues of students not being able to adequately access devices due to 1. not having them and 2. Not having network coverage to be able to use them. Mental Health have skyrocketed under the period of new normal that is online learning. Many more matters have continued to be a threat to students’ livelihood and the university has been far too silent on those matters.

The University has not at the very least outsourced leadership to fill the void that they continue to showcase. Not even their toothless SRC has stepped up to lead students at the height of issues facing students.
SASCO has committed itself to sharpening its tools and providing the necessary leadership and political direction the University deserves. It is our view that the university has truly missed an opportunity to be a cut above the rest. We will be sure to, from this moment going forward, guide the direction of the University.

The entire University is held at ransom by a Student Affairs division that refuses to act within the Values of Nelson Mandela University. The departments that care enough to assist students are castrated by the unmeted beaurocracy and the power obsession of this division which is characterised by the Dean’s Joseph Stalin style of leadership, A bearer of the Bolsheviks flag but a true Menshevik at heart. The University that throttles Nelson Mandela’s name as a fundraising bait but fails to dispense a single hot meal for the students. The students, have been stuck in the Stone Age, par medieval primitive existence of the Tsarist tenure characterized by no electricity, cold water and “NO BREAD”, “NO BREAD’, “NO BREAD”!

The University along with the logically bankrupt SRC through its evasive ways and lack of ideas have opted for a quick fix pyramid scheme solution by choosing to pay allowances earlier than the normal date.

Using the students funds to solve a crisis they have nothing to do with and not insisting that the University use the money that they are obliged to use in times of crisis shows just how much vacuum of leadership there is in the SRC. Students went four days without electricity and the University has not moved a muscle to assist students.

Students are not able to bath, cook or do their academic work during this period and the only communication sent to students was from the DVC of Teaching and Learning, of which was a communication and request of SASCO, and, indeed, due dates of students’ assignment and tests were shifted accordingly.

Amilcar Cabral warned us fervently that " Hide nothing from the masses of our people. Tell no lies. Expose lies whenever they are told. Mask no difficulties, mistakes, failures. Claim no easy victories…” and we dare not shy from this historic mission of the student movement.

Hasta la Victoria Siempre!

Aluta continua - the struggle continues!

SASCO Nelson Mandela University would like to extend its gratitude to all businesses surrounding Summerstrand who were more than willing to assist students of Nelson Mandela University in their time of need.

We would like to particularly thank Steers at Sasol Strandfontein and Jeuques Moore who owns a catering company and did not hesitate to come to the fore.

We further commit ourselves in ensuring that we source more catering so that we may be able to assist more students once again today.
Further communication will be posted on the page.

ELECTRICITY OUTAGE IN SUMMERSTRAND, HUMEWOOD, FOREST HILL AND SOUTH END.

REVOLUTIONARY GREETINGS

During these tough and trying times, SASCO notes the repair of the 132kV cable that is still ongoing and is taking longer than expected. This therefore means that there are a number of affected students both mentally and academically.

SASCO calls for the management to :
1. Postpone of all tests and assignment submissions that were suppose to be written in the week of 08 November - 12 November.
2. Student counselling to operate efficiently and effectively for all students who are affected by this.
3. The clinic to issue out food parcels immediately to those who lost their groceries due to the damage caused by the outage of electricity.
4. Challenge all landlords in the area to contribute money for groceries of students within their residences and areas.

SASCO understands the frustrations of students and will therefore fight until all these above mentioned issues are met. We are always ready to locate our energies and meet at the boom gates if our students are made to live such a horrible state of life.

“There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe nor politic nor popular, but he must take it because his conscience tells him it is right.” - Martin Luther King

SASCO remains the only student organization that champion’s students issues and struggles
