- COVID compliance behind bumper Graduation season for Mandela Uni
Mandela Uni will be hosting 26 Autumn Grad ceremonies in Gqeberha & George to enable its students to graduate safely in-person, while maintaining COVID-19 compliance protocols as per the President’s announcements last night (22 March).
This is only the second mask-to-mask Graduation season to be hosted on campus since the global coronavirus pandemic began more than 2 years ago. A smaller number of doctoral & masters’ students graduated in December last year.
All told, some 6200 students are expected to graduate, with 3 ceremonies in George from 7 to 8 April, & 23 ceremonies in Gqeberha from 20 April to 5 May
Strict adherence to COVID protocols
The increased number of ceremonies is to ensure that the 50% of capacity or maximum limit of 1000 people indoors is not exceeded. These adaptations also mean that the length of ceremonies is likely to be reduced to under 2 hours.
Adherence to the COVID protocols means each graduate is limited to 2 guests. A strict ticketing system will be in place to manage access to the ceremonies. All graduates & their guests should use the University’s self-screening tool https://webapps.mandela.ac.za/screening ahead of their ceremony to ensure wellness.
The wearing of masks indoors & social distancing, albeit at a slightly reduced distance, also remains compulsory.
Graduating students will be advised of all these COVID-19 protocol expectations & related matters via individual Graduation invitation letters. These will be distributed shortly.
Dates of various ceremonies
In the interim, the full list of ceremonies (https://graduation.mandela.ac.za/Graduation-Dates,-Times-Programmes) is provided to enable graduates and their guests to start making plans.
We trust that there will be no further changes to these dates and the hosting of our first full in-person Graduation season, in light of the ever-changing fluidity of the pandemic.
3 distinguished individuals – Ms Noxolo Grootboom, Mr Sindiso Mfenyana & the late Professor Lungile Pepeta – will also be conferred honorary doctorate degrees (a separate Memo will follow).

2022
Human Rights Day is one that affords us, as South Africans and Nelson Mandela University, an opportunity to reflect.
This day, which is celebrated on 21 March yearly, is a commemoration of a painful day in South African history and a stark reminder to its citizens about the sacrifices made for the attainment of democracy in the country.

In welcoming the arrival of students and the return of staff to campus, safety and security is recognised as central to creating a vibrant campus environment.
As University Management, we are thus deeply perturbed about reports of criminal acts perpetrated on and around our campuses. As an immediate response, access control is being tightened, supported by heightened on-site supervisory support.
The following measures are also being prioritised:
Boom-gate management
Increased frequency and visibility of campus patrols
Infra-structure renewal, notably camera upgrading and replacement
Ensuring safe campuses requires continuous, multi-stakeholder involvement. Safety Forums are being established under the leadership of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: People and Operations, Mr Lebogang Hashatse, as the critical mechanism for working tirelessly with both internal and external stakeholders to protect our staff and students.
I appeal to all of us for vigilance and to play our part in looking out for our own safety and that of those around us.
You are also urged to follow the safety tips that are distributed regularly via Memo and online, and to report suspicious activity to uniformed Campus Protection staff in your vicinity or contact the relevant emergency numbers listed below.
Working together we are stronger!
I take this opportunity to, again, wish all of us a safe return to campus, and a successful 2022 academic year.
Professor Sibongile Muthwa
Vice-Chancellor
