Human Rights Day is a reminder of the sacrifices of ordinary people, standing united to reclaim their rights. No human, no matter what background, colour, or orientation should be subject to discrimination or stripped of their rights.

The late, great, Archbishop Desmond Tutu beautifully said:
“My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together"

Be kind, be respectful, and have a wonderful Human Rights Day, South Africa.

Human Rights Day is one that affords us, as South Africans and Nelson Mandela University, an opportunity to reflect.

This day, which is celebrated on 21 March yearly, is a commemoration of a painful day in South African history and a stark reminder to its citizens about the sacrifices made for the attainment of democracy in the country.

WEBINAR: YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT AND THE SOLIDARITY ECONOMY

The Centre for Integrated Post-School Education and Training (CIPSET), Nelson Mandela University and the merSETA invite you to participate in a two-part webinar series related to our work with unemployed TVET graduates in the Eastern Cape. Our research explored how TVET graduates in engineering experience unemployment and ways in which these students could use their engineering and related skills in the establishment of collaborative and solidaristic forms of work that are meaningful to themselves and to society.

The webinars seek to reflect on and share experiences that emerged for this work and how this project could contribute to policy and practice in community, vocational and worker education.
Each webinar is divided into two sessions. You may choose to attend both or join the session that is of interest to you. We would value your participation in both sessions. The dates for these webinars are as follow:

Day 1 Thursday 24 February 2022

Webinar 1: 12h00 – 13h00 The Experience of Youth Unemployment and the Solidarity Economy

Webinar 2: 13h30 - 14h30 Youth-led Cooperatives and Livelihood alternatives

Nelson Mandela University has repositioned itself as a transformative, responsive university; in service of society. To achieve this ambition, the university established a new portfolio rooted in the interplay between engagement and transformation, and their interlinkages with research, learning and teaching.

As such, the university is responding to a key dilemma facing the higher education sector, nationally and globally. That is, if not immersed in society, universities will find it near impossible to engage authentically and, thus, productively with the current socio-economic, environmental and political challenges of our time, our place.

The core purpose of this portfolio is to provide intellectual and strategic leadership and oversee engagement and transformation in support of the vision and strategic objectives of the University. The portfolio has a substantive coordination and facilitative function, interwoven with faculties, entities and other business units across the institution; and beyond.
