Mark Veness from Lean, Siyethemba Mbambo from Quality, Sean David from Heat Treatment and Ashanth Jugnarain, Jayson Chetty and Sheldon Haywood from Cutters attended a 3-day PMCB Lean Conference late last month where Mark and Ashanth delivered a case study presentation on the exciting new lean transformation we are implementing in our Somta Factory starting with a 3L1 End Mill Line. The Conference had guest speaker Billy Taylor from America and featured several South African case studies, allowing delegates to gain insights from other people’s experiences, inspiring them with new tools and new thinking, enabling them to make their operations more agile and productive.

Shown here on the right is a “tool blank” consisting of an EN9 shank and a M2 body, that has been friction welded together. On the left is this blank after a run in our new Hwacheon Cutex. This Hwacheon Cutex has a dual spindle which allows us to easily face, centre and turn the body in the main spindle, then synchronise both spindles allowing the job to be smoothly transferred to the sub-spindle where the shank is face, centred and turned. It also has live tooling on the turret which allows us to add milling cycles to the operations, as seen here, where the mill square operation is done all in 1 cycle. All of this basically means that we can combine multiple operations in a single cycle making manufacturing faster and more cost effective.

Some newly coated Solid Carbide 4 Flute Regular Length Knuckle Form Fine Pitch Roughing End Mills. These end mills form part of our standard stocked Somta range of tooling so they will now move on to the packing department to be laser marked, packed and labelled. Thereafter, they will be sent to our JHB Sales Office which is set up to offer same day delivery to customers within the Gauteng region, and next day delivery to customers in all other provinces within South Africa.

Somta was in Swaziland earlier this month, where our distributor, Toolrite, had our products on display at a supplier day held at Royal Eswatini Sugar Corporation.
Toolrite is one of our newer distributors, and we are delighted with their commitment to promoting Somta in the Swaziland market.

Another carbide special we recently manufactured per customer request - a 25mm Solid Carbide 5 Flute Long Series End Mill for Aluminium. This tool has a SAFE LOCK clamping feature on the end of the shank, preventing it from spinning or pulling out during extreme milling applications. Due to the tool cutting at full depth, chip breakers were also added to the cutting edges.
