SMILING

Your baby’s first smiles will be in the womb; these smiles are caused by muscle movement and are not intentional. The smiles are reflexive and “more grimace than smile”. It is only from about 6 to 8 weeks of age, that the first ‘real’ and intentional smile appears. You may be wondering how you will be able to tell the difference; rest assured that you will recognise a real smile when it happens!

A smile may seem like a simple thing to you and me, but for your baby to smile intentionally she will need to have learnt a number of important skills, such as:

- How to keep the head stable, so the eyes can work together to focus (muscle strength).
- How to understand the visual cues baby sees (visual development).
- How to connect and communicate with other people (social development); and
- how to express appropriate feelings, such as pleasure, excitement and contentment (emotional development).

If baby is not smiling, it doesn’t necessarily mean that baby is sad. If baby is/was tube fed or cup fed, and the facial muscles haven’t had the opportunity to develop, baby may seem sad because baby is not smiling.

If baby is suffering from sensory overload, or is not stimulated sufficiently, baby's little face may also appear to lack expression.

Don’t worry − it is possible to develop baby's facial muscles. Contact a BabyGym Instructor near you to learn to massage the face and lips: https://babygym.co.za/instructor_list/

By the age of about 4 to 5 months, baby’s smiles should progress into a delightful baby gurgle.

A RELAXED BABY

Yes, some babies need to LEARN to relax, especially if they had a rough start to life.

In the developing embryo the skin and the nervous system both have the same origin, we can therefor think of the skin as the external portion of our nervous system. Because the skin and the nervous system have such a close connection, we can wake up or calm down the entire nervous system with deep pressure touch.

Objectives of the BabyGym Massage
- To bond with baby
- To relax and calm baby
- To stimulate development
- To build mom, dad or caregiver’s confidence in handling baby.

Benefits of the BabyGym Massage
- Gives baby a sense of safety and security
- Removes toxins
- Reduces pain
- Enhances circulation and metabolism
- Boosts the immune system to help baby fight infection
- Strengthens muscles
- Increases joint flexibility
- Activates growth hormones
- Creates a map of baby’s body in the brain.

Remember, a newborn baby is not yet aware of the body, what it looks like and what it can do. By massaging baby, we create a body map in the brain and increase awareness of the body. The brain can only use what the brain is aware of.

Massage is therefore a wonderful intro to mastering milestones!

Last week Wednesday we mentioned the inside senses. This week we continue with the inside senses and focus on:

PROPRIOCEPTION

The first inside sense is called proprioception. Sensors in the skin, muscles, joints and ligaments continually send messages to the brain, this is called the proprioceptive system, so that the brain is aware of our static (stationary) and moving (dynamic) bodily positions.

For example, with your eyes closed you still know when you are moving, standing still or sitting still, and whether you are doing so with your arms relaxed to your sides, or with your arms crossed over your chest; similarly, with eyes closed you are also still able to touch your nose and clap your hands due to well-developed proprioceptors.

The contractions of labour provide baby with an intense proprioceptive and deep tissue massage. The activated proprioceptors help baby to navigate towards the ni**le, to latch on and to feed.

We are guilty of many errors and many faults, but our worst crime is abandoning the children, neglecting the fountain of life.

Many things can wait. Children cannot.

Right now their bones are being formed, their blood is being made, and their senses
are being developed.

To them we cannot answer, “Tomorrow”.
Their name is “Today”.
