INDUSTRY NEWS | What this means for your business

South Africa's electricity costs aren't going away; here's what businesses should be planning for

A recent BusinessTech article highlights growing concerns that while load shedding has eased, South Africa's electricity system is approaching another financial crossroads. Maintaining, upgrading and expanding the country's electricity infrastructure will require significant investment, and those costs are likely to be reflected in future electricity tariffs.

📰 Read the full article: https://businesstech.co.za/news/energy/867542/south-africa-heading-for-a-cliff-and-people-will-have-to-pay-more-to-avoid-it/

So what does this mean for your business? It means the conversation is no longer just about keeping the lights on during power outages.

It's about managing the long-term cost of electricity. Forward-thinking businesses are already asking different questions:

• How can we reduce our peak electricity demand?
• Are our electrical systems operating as efficiently as possible?
• Is it time to invest in battery storage or smarter energy management?
• Are we monitoring where our energy is actually being used?

As electricity becomes a larger operating expense, every kilowatt saved has a direct impact on your bottom line.

This is why electrical engineering is becoming increasingly strategic. Modern electrical systems should not only be safe and compliant—they should also be designed to improve efficiency, reduce waste and prepare businesses for rising energy costs.

At Forge Projects, we believe resilience isn't only about backup power. It's about designing infrastructure that helps businesses remain competitive, regardless of what happens to future electricity tariffs.

The businesses that prepare today will be better positioned for tomorrow.

What steps is your business taking to improve energy efficiency and reduce long-term electricity costs?

🌍 EARTH OVERSHOOT DAY | Building a more sustainable future

Today marks Earth Overshoot Day, the point in the year when humanity's demand for natural resources exceeds what the Earth can regenerate in that same year.

It's a reminder that sustainability isn't only about making big changes. It's about making smarter decisions every day.

Whether it's improving energy efficiency, reducing unnecessary electricity consumption, investing in renewable energy or designing systems that perform better for longer, every step contributes to a more sustainable future.

At Forge Projects, we believe good engineering should deliver more than reliable performance; it should help businesses and communities use resources more responsibly and build infrastructure that's ready for tomorrow.

The choices we make today will shape the world we leave for future generations.

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT | The most expensive mistake we see during COC inspections

One of the biggest misconceptions we encounter is that if the lights switch on and the plugs work, the electrical installation must be compliant.

Unfortunately, that's not always the case.

During Certificate of Compliance (COC) inspections, we regularly identify issues such as unprotected circuits, incorrect wiring, damaged components and previous installations that don't meet current safety standards. Many of these problems remain hidden until a property is sold, renovated or inspected.

The cost of addressing these issues is often far lower when they're identified early, rather than at the last minute when a COC is urgently required.

At Forge Projects, we conduct thorough inspections and provide Certificates of Compliance that give property owners confidence their electrical installations meet the required safety and legal standards.

Because compliance isn't just about ticking a box, it's about protecting your property, your investment and the people who use it.

⚡ WEEKEND HOME ELECTRICAL CHECKLIST

A few minutes this weekend could help prevent electrical faults and keep your home safer.

Before the new week begins, take a quick look at the following:

✅ Test your earth leakage unit to ensure it's functioning correctly.

✅ Inspect extension leads for cracks, fraying or loose connections.

✅ Check plugs and sockets for signs of damage, overheating or burn marks.

✅ Avoid overloading multi-plugs and adaptors with high-powered appliances.

✅ Replace any damaged electrical cords or plugs—temporary fixes like electrical tape aren't a safe long-term solution.

Regular visual checks won't replace a professional inspection, but they can help you identify potential issues before they become costly or dangerous.

Stay safe, and have a great weekend from the Forge Projects team.

💡 TIPS WITH FORGE | When Should You Replace an Extension Lead?

Extension leads are convenient, but they aren't designed to last forever.

It may be time to replace yours if you notice any of these warning signs:

⚠️ Cracked, frayed or damaged insulation
⚠️ Loose plugs or sockets
⚠️ Burn marks or discolouration
⚠️ The lead feels hot during normal use
⚠️ It has been repaired with tape or makeshift fixes

Using a damaged extension lead increases the risk of electrical faults, equipment damage and even fire.

A simple replacement today could prevent a much bigger problem tomorrow.

If you're unsure whether your electrical equipment is safe, Forge Projects can help assess your installation and recommend the right solution.
