Happy Birthday Desmond Tutu! born 7 October 1931

Bishop Desmond Tutu was born in 1931 in Klerksdorp, Transvaal. His father was a teacher, and he himself was educated at Johannesburg Bantu High School. After leaving school he trained first as a teacher at Pretoria Bantu Normal College and in 1954 he graduated from the University of South Africa. After three years as a high school teacher he began to study theology, being ordained as a priest in 1960. The years 1962-66 were devoted to further theological study in England leading up to a Master of Theology. From 1967 to 1972 he taught theology in South Africa before returning to England for three years as the assistant director of a theological institute in London. In 1975 he was appointed Dean of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Johannesburg, the first black to hold that position. From 1976 to 1978 he was Bishop of Lesotho, and in 1978 became the first black General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches. Tutu is an honorary doctor of a number of leading universities in the USA, Britain and Germany.

Desmond Tutu has formulated his objective as “a democratic and just society without racial divisions”, and has set forward the following points as minimum demands:

1. equal civil rights for all
2. the abolition of South Africa’s passport laws
3. a common system of education
4. the cessation of forced deportation from South Africa to the so-called “homelands”

Your help is needed please.

The Knysna Alien Buster team have been working in and around Knysna since the fires in 2017.

Makkie Scheepers, who lives in Brenton, started this initiative, as she is very passionate about the very special fynbos we find in our area, and additionally, she was concerned at the rapid regrowth rate of the alien vegetation.

Makkie ensured that the team were well trained and well equipped, and the team have done a superb job of clearing many properties of alien vegetation to ensure that we keep the fuel load under control, and allow the fynbos to regrow.

We are desperately looking for more work for the team.
The cost to you is the daily fee of R1700.00, which covers the wages of the 6 workers, transport, herbicide, equipment, safety clothing is all included. The group of people working behind the scenes, who try and help the team, do not earn anything for their efforts. All admin costs, marketing, fund raising, data, telephone charges, the drivers wages, and any other costs needed to make this community service a success is absorbed by them.

Please could you spread the word, and help keep this team working, and keep our beautiful area cleared of invasive alien species. We have many references from landowners who have used the team and who are willing to recommend them.

Please contact Judy Harrison on 0832661200 or Makkie Scheepers on 0832635405 or Candace Myers on 0834479315 for more information or for a quote.

Sharing a happy moment over coffee and cake with Shawn and what a joy to meet his significant other. Shawn stayed a whole month with us because Knysna is home to the best TEFL school and fantastic people come here to be trained as English teachers before going to other countries. Of course, the pandemic impacts on most people's plans so it is great to hear from Shawn and others about the creativity they make use of to navigate this nee world. And in Shawn's case there was even love waiting for him in his hometown.
