Canโ€™t understand what your toddler is saying? ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

1. Tell your child to show you (or point to) what they need or want ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ

2. Take your best guess! What is your child looking at? Look at body language๐Ÿ‘€

3. Give your child a choice between 2 items you think they may want ๐Ÿค—

4. Be sincere and let your child know you donโ€™t understand ๐Ÿซ‚

Welcome to my Sensory Spot!

Did you know that many kids who arenโ€™t regulated or are not getting their sensory needs met can struggle to access their language abilities? Itโ€™s true!

Iโ€™ve been slowly adding sensory based items into my Communication Station - aka speech room- the last few years (flexible seating, movement activities, sensory bins, sensory toys) and this year I added a sensory spot and couldnโ€™t love it more! Neither can my teachers who keep asking to come use it as a calm space ๐Ÿคฃ

Hereโ€™s what I added:
๐Ÿถ dog beds (yes for real, and yes if you do this you have to sit on them at the store to test their comfort level ๐Ÿ˜‚) from HomeGoods

Everything else I got on Amazon and will link in the comments:
๐Ÿ  32 inch bubble fish tube
๐Ÿ’ก Hexagon touch wall lights (has a remote and changes colors when you touch it!)
๐Ÿ”ตSensory spot matching disks by Special Supplies
๐Ÿ”ฎGolden fidget spinner ball
๐Ÿ’ฆ Liquid Floor tiles- moves when you push or jump on them
๐Ÿ’Ÿ reversible sequin pillows

Want to know one of the best ways to get your toddler talking? ๐Ÿ’ฌ

1. Pay attention to what motivates your little one and then create language learning activities around those things ๐Ÿงธ

2. If your little boy is interested in cars - your target words can be โ€œcarโ€, โ€œvroomโ€, โ€œgoโ€, โ€œstopโ€, โ€œfastโ€, โ€œslowโ€ ๐Ÿš—

3. If your little girl is interested in dolls, you can target words such as โ€œdollโ€, body parts, โ€œfeedโ€, โ€œwashโ€ โ€œgo to sleepโ€ ๐Ÿช†

Your toddler is more likely to communicate about something that is fun and interesting to them! Follow your childโ€™s lead ๐Ÿค—

1๏ธโƒฃ How do you know if your child has an ear infection? ๐Ÿ‘‚๐Ÿผ
Fever
Pulling/ tugging on the ear
Irritability or restless sleep
Decreased activity
Lack of appetite
Vomiting or diarrhoea
Draining fluid from the outer ear

2๏ธโƒฃ Can Ear Infections Affect Hearing?
Fluid buildup in the middle ear blocks sound, which can lead to temporary hearing problems. Kids having a problem might -
Not respond to soft sounds
Need to turn up the TV
Talk louder
Seem inattentive at school

3๏ธโƒฃ How Long Do Ear Infections Last?
Middle ear infections often go away on their own within 2 or 3 days, even without any specific treatment.

If signs still occur, let your audiologist know, as untreated ear infections can lead to more serious complications.

If your child is learning (or has plans to learn) two or more languages we need you to know this โ€ฆ
โ โ
๐Ÿ‘๐ŸผGO FOR IT! Bilingualism or multilingualism is an AMAZING gift to give your child!โ โ
โŒ Exposing your child to 2+ languages WILL NOT cause a language delay.โ โ
โ โ
Let's discuss the 2 factors to consider when raising a multilingual child:โ โ
โ โ
1๏ธโƒฃ Talk to your child in BOTH languages A LOT! Think QUANTITY! โ โ
Do not underestimate the power of consistently exposing your child to two languages. We want you to use both languages as much as possible and talk to your A LOT! Remember to use new vocabulary in EACH language and use it AGAIN and AGAIN to reinforce these new words your little one is learning.โ โ
โ โ
2๏ธโƒฃ Language proficiency matters! Think QUALITY: โ โ
When you are exposing your child to two or more languages, the proficiency of the speakers they are learning from matters! It is important that your little one is hearing and learning the correct syntax and grammar in each language. โ โ
โ โ
๐ŸŒŸTIP 1โ€ฆIt is super helpful to get FACE to FACE with your child when teaching them new words. Providing them with stimulating face-to-face interactions is crucial in helping children acquire each language! โ โ
๐ŸŒŸTIP 2: Show actions and objects as you label words in both languages! This will help add meaning to these words!โ โ
โ โ
There are no universal rules to follow when it comes to raising a multilingual child. At the end of the day, focus on raising a happy child. The ability to speak two languages and the cognitive, neurological, and social benefits that come with it are an added bonus ๐Ÿ’–โ โ  Every child is different, and so it is important to consult with your speech therapist.
โ โ
โญ๏ธ We want to know, is your child growing up with one language ๐Ÿ—ฃ or more than one? ๐Ÿ—ฃ๐Ÿ—ฃ If so, what languages?โ โ

Acute otitis media โ€“ Middle ear infection in children

75% of children will develop an ear infection by the time they are 3 years old ๐Ÿ‘‚๐Ÿผ
This can consequently affect speech and language development ๐Ÿ’ฌ

Hi everyone ๐Ÿ˜Š Iโ€™ve started using a lot more sensory play in my therapy. โ€œSensory exploration allows us to provide language stimulation in a meaningful context and create functional learning opportunities. Sensory play is fun and keeps children engaged and motivated! It takes the focus off of the articulation or language targets โ€“ making therapy feel less like work, and great for generalizing skills.โ€

Weโ€™ve therefore created Peachy Speech kits - we have a farm, insect, wild animal and space kit. They are R220 and include language enrichment ideas and activities ๐Ÿ˜Š you can also visit our Instagram page - https://instagram.com/rbspeech_audiology?igshid=w1idiubth341
