One day in the Moremi.... when Dieter and Harry were comfortably camped and ready for supper, they heard a series of loud crushing noises. By now, after the lion visits at night, and the invisible baboons....these two intrepid adventurers were taking a bit more care and approached the area very carefully.
Just as well. They found this young elephant bull making himself lovely to go courting...performing his ablutions.
Fascinated, they watched quietly for over an hour while he had a good (mud) bath, and scrubbed himself clean on a nearby tree. He walked around the entire tree, looking for the little branches, which stuck out at just the right height to scratch the itchy bits. Every time he got a bit of mud off and got rid of an itch, he almost smiled and shook his head (and tusks) happily.
Finally, clean and ready, he wandered off, we hope to find a nice lady...... botswana

One day we were driving in the Moremi district in Botswana- and saw a small group of elephants splashing around in some water in the morning sun, so we stopped and watched and took one photo after the other...just another blissful day in the bush for photographers!
Finally, ready to leave we looked up and found ourselves in the middle of a herd of at least 100 elephants- with more and more coming through the bush to join the bathers.....one young bull became curious- we held our breath and didn't dare move as he came closer and closer to the vehicle- flapping his ears at us, picking up sticks and shaking them, and stirring up huge clouds of dust.
At that point we knew we had to move out of there as quickly and safely as we could so we started the engine, which startled the elephants surrounding us and gave us a precious few seconds to get away fast.....with the young bull - once he had recovered from his fright, flapping his ears and chasing us for a few hundred metres - another timely escape!

One day in the Okavango....June and some fellow adventurers were far from everywhere in the middle of a baking hot, open plain alone with a large pride of lions feeding on the remains of a kill.
As the morning wore on and the heat intensified, one by one the members of the pride started to leave the carcass, seeking the nearest shade. Each one gazed longingly at the open Landcruiser as the closest shady sanctuary and so they approached, singly or in pairs, and flopped down panting in the patch of shade we offered, bloated bellies heaving. Very soon the shady side of the vehicle had more bodies vying for space than shade on offer and soon the growling and spats started as each lion refused to budge for the new arrivals.
The cubs scrambled right under the Landcruiser and settled down for a peaceful sleep, undisturbed by all the disturbances of grumpy hot lions trying to grab a tiny patch of shade.
It was the most incredible opportunity for photographs- and they took hundreds. Ready after some time to return to the cool of the camp and some cold drinks, June realised they could not move - the leonine visitors were obviously now settled down for the long haul …. until sunset! Leaving was not quite so easy with all the adult lions lounging alongside the vehicle and all the cubs underneath. but June started the engine whereupon startled cubs shot up from their blissful sleep, banging their heads on the vehicle floor before bundling out whilst the adult lions scattered in confusion. As they drove slowly away, June looked back to reproachful faces - they just couldnt believe they had been abandoned to the midday heat!

It was a very hot day in the Okavango....even the crocodiles were too lethargic to bother, and every small and large creature in the place was sensible enough to be snoozing the heat of the day away somewhere a bit cooler.
June Song was no exception- with three small children growing up in the safari camp, June needed every break she could get. Seeing them asleep and watched over, she snuck off to a safe (no crocs) watering hole, wanting to lie down near water and just doze....(do NOT try this at home!).
Snoozing happliy she heard a snuffling noise...and found a curious visitor checking her out at the water hole.....with great presence of mind she grabbed her camera and got this shot.....

Earlier this year on our recce to Botswana and Namibia, we came across what seemed at first glance just to be rocks on the mountain.
When we got there there it was silent and hot. We pitched our tents and looked up- and finally saw the rocks were a troop of about 40 Baboon. Where there are Baboons there are Leopard but we didnt catch a glimpse of these shy cats...

A common sighting in the beautiful Okavango Delta, just make sure you are on a boat and not a Mokoro (dug-out canoe) •
