Reinventing a High-Performance CPU Cooler with Additive Manufacturing 05/06/2026

Reinventing a High-Performance CPU Cooler with Additive Manufacturing

High heat loads limit the miniaturization of portable computers, power electronic devices and high-power LED lighting. Most ambitious technological solutions from the lab are not ready for mass production and deployment in consumer products.

But industrial 3D printing, or so-called additive manufacturing, can bridge the gap for thermal management components and keep lossy electronics cool even when the available space is severely limited.

The freedom of design provided by 3D printed thermal management components offers the same or superior effectiveness as conventionally manufactured components, but requires much less space. Enlarged surfaces, any-shape geometries and conformal cooling channels are among the opportunities of this manufacturing technology.

The efficiency gains that can be achieved were demonstrated with a gaming CPU cooler design for additive manufacturing. To maintain the same chip temperature, the new part requires 81% less space and 93% less weight than the best-in-class conventional cooler.

Printing without supports or with a minimum of supports is a hot topic in metal powder bed fusion. The reason is apparent: Cost and waste reduction.

The number of supports impacts not only post-processing but also build-time and material consumption.

AM is moving quickly to meet even greater requirements—such as fully 3D printed combustion chambers with high-performance features, lighter weight structural components, or even fully 3D printed satellites.

Never before in the history of manufacturing has the development of commercial space hardware been so accessible.

The challenges of fast development and innovation have lessened because of industrial metal 3D printing (additive manufacturing, or AM). Whether propulsion, structural, or integrated componentry, AM is accelerating the latest space race.

The latest advancement? Fully printed 3D components up to one (1) meter tall.

COVID-19. A Tipping Point for Additive Manufacturing
In the wake of COVID-19, the manufacturing industry has been turned upside down. In a world of fixed supply chains and complex logistics, the mega factories we rely on are receiving a beat down.

Manufacturing is not a cure for COVID-19, but with the shortages of basic medical products like PPEs and respirators, it’s clear that manufacturing is an important cog in the machine needed to battle the virus.

While we deal with our current crisis, it’s time to get real about where industrial 3D printing (additive manufacturing, AM) fits into the manufacturing ecosystem.

Time to rethink … now.

The next crisis is going to happen. We don’t have a crystal ball to know what industries will be disrupted, but it is not hyperbole to say that industrial 3D printing can reduce risk.

The question now is will manufacturers be more open to the flexibility additive manufacturing offers with mass customisation, production and spare parts on-demand, localized sourcing, simplified logistics, and sustainability.

Rapid 3D Appointed as the Dyemansion Reseller Partner for Sub-Saharan Africa 03/06/2026

We are an EOS partner in South Africa as well and we believe that in order to grow the additive manufacturing industry, it’s very important to have a finishing workflow.

And in order to do that properly, you need to have an automated finishing workflow and, I think DyeMansion [https://sbee.link/6vt7hx43gq] meets all of those requirements to move into production. It’s very important to be able to give the customer an end-use product, that is coloured and professionally finished. And you can’t do that without some sort of printed product workflow. And again the DyeMansion workflow — Powershot C, Powershot S, DM60 ticks all of those boxes and does their job very well in terms of being able to provide a complete solution for a customer that wants to go into production. It opens up all sorts of opportunities for the customer and, therefore, for us as a DyeMansion reseller partner.

It’s very important to be able to offer the entire production system. We started our discussions when DyeMansion was starting out, so we saw immediately that there was potential there and I think that DyeMansion is a very dynamic and agile company, and they’re great to work with. It’s been a very good journey so far and hope it continues for a long time.
