Given the significant degree of cross-linking of its carbon chains, the Firestone RubberGard EPDM membrane can be stretched more than 300% in all directions and recover its initial shape after stretching.

This high elasticity allows the RubberGard EPDM
membrane to withstand all dimensional variation without this having an effect on its physical properties.

The RubberGard EPDM membrane remains extremely flexible at temperatures as low as
-45 °C. It is therefore able to be used widely, since it adapts to all irregular substrate shapes, regardless of the external temperature.

When operating at low temperatures, if the membrane is under mechanical stress such as
when exposed on roofs, it maintains all its flexibility and its properties remain unchanged.

Low-temperature application nonetheless requires certain precautions to ensure safety
and a high-quality result.

The Firestone RubberGard EPDM membrane offers almost unlimited resistance to hydrostatic pressures.

Firestone has carried out laboratory pressure tests showing that pressure applied to the membrane can reach 35 kg/cm2 (equivalent to a water column of 350 m or 3.4 MPa) without causing damage to the membrane.

Tests carried out according to the EN 1928 standard have shown that, when pressure equivalent to a water column of 40 m (400 KPa) is applied, the RubberGard EPDM membrane and its seams remain waterproof.

Although Firestone recommends a minimum roof pitch allowing adequate run-off, stagnant water will not accelerate the aging of the membrane or the seams.

Due to its chemical composition (saturated and highly cross-linked carbon chains, no plasticizers) and its production process (hot vulcanisation), the RubberGard EPDM membrane is considered chemically inert because its chemical composition is constant over the course of time (upon contact with authorised products).

A stable chemical composition is indispensable for guaranteeing the mechanical properties of the membrane in the long term. Unlike some thermoplastic membranes, no decrease in surface weight has been recorded following the loss of the membrane's constituents.

Green roofs consisting of vegetation planted on top of a waterproofing membrane have formed an integral part of the landscape over the years.

The RubberGard EPDM membrane has successfully passed various tests of resistance
to roots (DIN 4062, CEN/TS 14416: 2005, EN 13948, FLL).

The roofing systems are compatible with extensive green roofing systems, using sedum, which requires very little maintenance.

However, care is advised with respect to certain plants that produce particularly aggressive rhizomes. A non-exhaustive list of plants that produce rhizomes can be obtained on request. Where this type of plant is present, a protective
barrier must be installed to prevent an attack on the roofing system. More information on green roofing systems can also be obtained on request.

Broad Range of Chemical Resistance

The Firestone RubberGard EPDM membrane has a relatively wide spectrum of chemical resistance (pH 4 to 10). However, certain products are not compatible with EPDM membranes, such as hydrocarbons, greases, oils etc.

A list of the chemical compounds compatible with the RubberGard EPDM membrane is available on request.

Unlike other waterproofing membranes, the RubberGard EPDM membrane does not have incompatibility problems with polystyrene, old asphalts, PVC membranes etc. It is compatible with almost all waterproofing substrates.

As a result of the large membrane sizes, good mechanical properties and easy assembly process, RubberGard EPDM roofing systems are quick and easy to install.

In an occupation that is heavily weather dependent, the installation speed of the RubberGard EPDM membrane is a major advantage.
