Our contribution to the development and deployment of the performance dashboard for the Port of Cape Town fills us with pride. The collaboration we shared with the South African Association of Freight Forwarders (SAAFF) has enabled us to efficiently realize this ambitious project.

Regarding the specific case of Durban port, the steady increase in the number of export containers over the last five weeks (from 5,271 to 6,369) indicates positive momentum in trade activity and potential economic growth. This trend suggests that businesses in the region are experiencing a rising demand for their goods in international markets. It highlights the port's significance as a gateway for export-oriented industries and underscores the importance of efficient port operations and logistics infrastructure to support trade expansion.

Monitoring and analyzing such trends in export container volumes can provide insights into the performance of local industries, identify emerging market opportunities, and guide policy decisions related to trade facilitation and infrastructure development.

Cost and time are often the main considerations when it comes to moving goods through Africa. However, geo-political related security events threaten the safety of conveying goods thus impacting transport corridors and countries.

This very notion is raised by Mr Gavin Kelly, chairperson of The Road Freight Association (RFA) on 9 July 2023, response to recent trucks attacks on the N3 and N4, " South Africa’s “Gateway to Africa” status has been lost and these attacks will further cement the move of transit freight from South Africa to neighbouring countries. Port revenues will drop, as will income through all support and related freight logistics users."

The Logistics Monitoring System (LMS), using Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) data, highlights the risk of these regional security events on the movement of goods, along transport corridors, in the below graphic. It is clear that land locked African countries have alternatives to South Africa.

Border Crossing Times in South Africa

The Minister of Home Affairs, Aaron Motsoaledi, told the National Council of Provinces of a massive overhaul at the border posts.

The turnaround times of trucks at some of the South African borders shows that these interventions are clearly needed, we hope that the Department’s efforts will have an impact on these measures. LMS tracks borders in near real-time and has data dating back to 2017.

Our suggestion for a smoother travel experience in and out of Lesotho is to prioritize crossing the border early in the morning, to avoid possible heavy traffic and minimize waiting time experienced later in the day as advised by our analytics and comprehensive reporting.

Our Logistics Monitoring System currently tracks 61 border posts and 54 regional trade routes, 100,000 heavy motor vehicles, 72 economic zones, and generates 100,000 vessel data points per week, giving our clients unprecedented visibility into logistics movement across the African continent. This enables businesses to optimize their supply chain, reduce costs, and improve efficiency by identifying areas where improvements can be made.

One of the key benefits of our Logistics Monitoring System is the analytics and reporting capabilities it provides. Our system can analyze vast amounts of data from multiple sources, providing our clients with meaningful insights into their performance across a range of key metrics relative to the industry.
