The 🎨 PALETTE + TASTE CELEBRATION 🧀 Countdown: 3 Days Left! Want to know a little more about this incredible celebration on 30 April 2021? Well here we go: 😁

Playing on the idea of a painter’s palette, where ideas are brought to life, and the human palate, one’s ability to distinguish and appreciate different flavours, the Palette & Taste festival takes you on a journey through the heart of Great Brak River village where you can experience the colourful local culture, live music, delicious dishes and delectable drinks, and mesmerising artwork and crafts. 🖌🎵

Great Brak River is rich in local artists, and this festival will be the perfect opportunity to view incredible artwork and rub shoulders with some of your favourites. 😁

Notable artists include Maryna Human, Lynda Murison, Petro Taute and Carina Beyers, who will be hosting an “Art in the Park” event at Die Ou Pastorie Teetuin from 10:00 until 16:00. Enjoy a high tea while watching them paint live, share tips of the trade and check out their latest artwork.

Galleries that will be open on the day include Art @ Long, who will be sharing all different types of art mediums, including movie screenings, and Ken Maloney Art Gallery at Seeplaas, which will have some amazing three-dimensional artwork on display.

Music gives soul to the universe, and Great Brak River’s musicians are brimming with it. There will be something for everyone at this town-wide event – from solo singers to jazz and bass numbers, and guitarists to multi-instrumentalists. 🎷🎹🎸

Street musicians Hennie Mouton, Sanya Paeschel and students (from 10:00 until 13:00) and Den will be serenading the crowds, while Mordegai Erasmus will be playing at Periwinkel from 12:00 until 13:00 and Petronella Baard with Franco Engelbrecht on piano, Johan Engelbrecht on violin and guitar and Lelané van der Merwe on cello, will be rocking it out at Twin Trees Waffle House from 12:00 until 14:00.

Also on the cards are Acoustic Route (Frangos Restaurant from 13:00 until 16:00), Ovation Music and Viv Rivers (Klipheuwel Trading Post from 13:00), Vernon Barnard (The Pot - Groot Brakrivier in the evening), Richard Sharp (Frango’s Restaurant from 18:00 until 21:00),The Renegade Artist (De Vette Mossel - Grootbrak Seafood Restaurant at 18:30) and Two’s a Crowd (Searles Village Restaurant & Pub from 19:00 until 22:00).

Additionally, our local Groot Brakrivier Brass Bands will perform from 09:30 at the police station, heading over to the museum. At 15:00, they will play again as they reroute back to the police station.

What would a celebration be without food? Every restaurant in the area is hosting specials, and many of them are offering pairings or providing a meal as part of an artist’s show, so make sure you arrive hungry! 😁🍤

Some say wine is bottled poetry, and we agree. There will be multiple tastings and pairings in the area, including Boplaas Kleinbrak who will be showcasing their finest whiskeys, brandies, gins and Portuguese wines at and in collaboration with La Chocolaterie Rococo.

A Portuguese tasting will also take place at the famous Chicken to go, Seemeeu Vis en Tjips and Scoopy Doo's Ice Cream Parlour. Head over to Twin Trees Waffle House for a Jakkalsvlei wine, Sharlebel Foodies Delight and smoked cheeses pairing. There will also be Black Mountain Gin tastings at the same venue.

Additionally, The Salty River Beerhouse will be hosting some unique and exciting food and craft combinations throughout the day.

If coffee is more your thing, Brothers Coffee Shop will be doing a tasting with La Chocolaterie Rococo at 10:00. You can also visit their farm to experience their new specialty coffees.

Culture and history are the cornerstones of Greak Brak River. With so much of it, the Palette & Taste celebration hopes to highlight some of the local heritage, such as the Great Brak River Museum, the flower garden and our local artisans.

Starting with the Volkwyn chair – a variation on the Regency chair that was made famous by the Volkwyn family – it can be viewed at the Great Brak River Museum while enjoying a pork spitbraai. This delicious meal is hosted by the descendants of the Volkwyn family, who have lived and worked out of the Great Brak River area since the early 20th century. Join them from 11:30.

There will be a historical walk, departing from the Great Brak River Museum at 18:00 where all proceeds will go to keeping the Museum up and running. You will learn all about the fascinating history of the area, guided by Leon from Mossel Bay historic ghost walk. There’s sure to be a few surprises!

Don’t forget to visit Fynbos Paradys Blommemark for lectures on the beautiful fauna and flora in our area. Our famous proteas will be on sale, and Hennie Booyens, our homegrown horticulturalist, will be ready and eager to answer your questions.

The Diaz Express will also be running from Great Brak River to Hartenbos and back. Come see our land at its finest.

On the literary front, Spies Krige will be discussing his upcoming book on the history of the area, which will formally launch in November this year, so you’re in for a rare sneak peek!

If you’re looking for handcrafted gifts, Palette & Taste is the best time to shop. The Mercantile South Africa will be open and offering a wide range of local and handmade products, such as home décor, gifts, clothing and novelties.

The famous street artist, Fourie Ackerman, will be at Periwinkel to show off his artwork and craft programme for children. Also at Periwinkel between 11:30 and 13:00 will be Steven Montgomery, balloon animal artist. The kids will love him!

Don't forget – there's so much more to experience in Great Brak River. There will be hot air balloon and helicopter rides available, weather permitting, and quad bikes can also be rented out. Ilita Lodge - Accommodation, Events and Conferencing, one of our local favourites, will be hosting a 07:00 Pilates class and at 08:00 until 10:00, a wellness morning, free workout and relaxing yoga session will be hosted at Mooiuitsig Kombuis.

Our programme for the day is extensive, and ideal for the whole family. Maps and a list of participating vendors will be available on the day so you can plan your adventure. It truly will be a day of flavour, fun and appreciation – be it of art, delicious food, our culture or discovering some amazing local gems.
