The Tea Junxion

The beautiful (if slightly spooooky looking) 'Spider Lily' (bot. Hymenocallis) produces just one flush of flowers per annum - in March. They seem to simply appear without any real warning - suddenly tad-DAH! the plant is covered in gorgeous white flowers. πŸ˜€
The Spider Lily plant is green all year round, is fairly waterwise and multiplies by means of rhizomes.

The van Rooyens of Groot Brak enjoyed some of our delicious treats last week as part of their 58th wedding anniversary celebrations!
Fifty-eight years? WOW!!!
Huge congratulations to you both!

This Giant Stapelia was recently in bloom at tThe Tea Junxion. The flower emits an odour that attracts flies and beetles, thereby aiding pollination. Some carrion flowers actually trap the insect for a while to ensure pollination.

These cheerful holidaymakers are an extended family group from Europe on their first visit to our beautiful country. Taking full advantage of the gorgeous summer weather they stopped off at The Tea Junxion for refreshing drinks as well as some of our delicious sweet treats!

The Tea Junxion

Marc, a visitor from Switzerland, cycled into The Tea Junxion this week for cold refreshment and a bite to eat after negotiating the first 2 river passes on the Seven Passes Road which runs from George to Knysna.
Using back roads wherever possible, he is cycling from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth after which he will fly back to CT to meet up with a friend for a much more leisurely exploration of CT and surrounding winelands.
We were amazed at the tiny amount of 'luggage' he's carrying for the 2 week journey but he explained that every kilo you can leave out of your luggage is one kilo less to get up steep hills so minimalism is definitely advisable!
I told him about Ed (see a previous fb post) and the bottle of red wine he always has in a side bag of his bicycle. Marc looked truly horrified at the additional kg+ that it added to the weight. πŸ˜„
It was lovely to meet you, Marc - may you go well!

These 3 lovely ladies visited the Tea Junxion this week and we just love their story!
50 years ago they met in primary school in Pietermaritzburg and to this day are firm friends.
They are now scattered around the planet - 1 lives in America, another in Australia and the 3rd in South Africa - but make a point of meeting up at least once every 10 years. To date they've met twice in America, once in Namibia, this time South Africa and they plan to meet in Australia in 5 years time to celebrate that friends 60th birthday together.
How often 'life' gets in the way of friendships but these friends have not allowed that to happen.
We salute them and wish them many more happy meet ups!

Today our little tea garden reached 100 likes on fb. 😁
A huge 'THANK YOU!' to everyone who has visited us and those who have liked this page! We love you!

PS. Right now Durante 'Sapphire Showers', Day Lilies and Tibouchina, amongst others, are all dressed up in their gorgeous plumage and creating beautiful displays in our garden.

Last year Jonny, from County Cork in Ireland, rode his 450cc Suzuki from home, across England, down through Spain, then to Morocco and down the entire west coast of Africa all the way to Cape Town!

Leaving the bike in CT he went back home to work for a few months and then in early last month he left Cape Town and started the journey up the east coast of the continent!

Using roads less travelled he came upon The Tea Junxion and stopped in for refreshments.

Softly spoken and with a lilting Irish accent, Jonny is doing what so many of us only dream about but never do.

Go well, Jonny - may the Angel of Nomads be with you!

Today our beloved Finlay died.

We have lost our friend, protector and faithful companion. Visitors to The Tea Junxion and nursery will remember having been greeted in the driveway with a tail wag and then guided into the gardens by him.

He loved to take himself for walks down 7 Passes Road for a swim in the Silver River or to visit a friend. People were forever telling us they'd seen him here or there, often several kilometres away from home.
Just recently he spent the night with a family in George after someone, thinking he was lost, picked him up (right outside The Tea Junxion!) and took him home. We were distraught but fortunately he was located early the next morning.

At 7 he was not an old dog and we had no clue that he wouldn't live for many years yet. Sadly that was not to be and once his organs became compromised all hope faded and he had to be released from any more pain and suffering.

His absolute most favouritest thing was going to the beach. Playing on the sand, swimming in the waves were such huge fun and he would begin to psych himself up in the late afternoons in the hopes that he was about to be taken to the beach!

Finlay at his happiest is how we will remember him - and with much love.

Hamba kahle, beautiful gentle Finlay.

After a tough training ride on the 7 Passes Road this cheerful group of cyclist friends treated themselves to some of the deliciousness on offer at The Tea Junxion.
On Saturdays and Sundays we open super early so that we can offer refreshments to our cyclist friends!

It's the holiday season and this Cape Town family are regulars - they come to The Tea Junxion every year during their holiday! 😁
Enjoy your holiday, guys - looking forward to seeing you next year!

This gorgeous bloom almost hurts the eyes with its brightness and sheer beauty. The Zygo cactus is not much to look at but once a year it produces this stunner which is about the size of a dinner plate! The flower only lasts for 2 days and so we appreciate it all the more when it graces our garden sometime around November each year.

Meet Ed!
He popped into The Tea Junxion recently for a breakfast muffin and coffee before setting off again for his next overnight stop on his bicycle journey from Cape Town, up the east coast of SA, to Pietermaritzburg. He's taken 2 months off work to do this trip and plans to surprise friends by pedalling up to their farmhouse outside PMburg and saying he's just popped in for coffee! πŸ™ƒ
We love the bottle of red wine stashed in the bag next to the back wheel πŸ˜‚
Cheers to you, Ed!

The Tea Junxion is set under trees in our beautiful garden designed and maintained by Flo Owen, specialist landscaper and owner of the Tea Junxion tea garden and succulent nursery.
