How much do you know about Van Gogh’s Sunflowers? 5 surprising facts about this famous art work.

Van Gogh Museum

How did Vincent van Gogh become the painter of Sunflowers? Vincent was so pleased with his latest version of Sunflowers that he painted it twice more. It may seem odd that Vincent copied his own work, yet it was something that he did more often – particularly if he was pleased with a painting. In this case, he had another reason. His friend Paul Gauguin wanted to have the painting, but Vincent didn’t want to part with it. As you can see, the works were not identical: there are 16 flowers on the first painting, but only 15 on the other two.

‘It’s a type of painting that changes its aspect a little, which grows in richness the more you look at it’, wrote Vincent to his brother Theo. People have now been looking at Vincent’s Sunflowers (1889) for more than 130 years. Not only us, for our enjoyment, but also our international team of specialists. They were looking to determine the condition of the painting. And most importantly: to establish how we can preserve the painting for future generations.

‘… today’s palette is definitely colourful — sky blue, pink, orange, vermilion, brilliant yellow, bright green, bright wine red, violet. But by intensifying all the colours one again achieves calm and harmony. And something happens like with the Wagner music which, performed by a large orchestra, is no less intimate for that’, wrote Van Gogh.

Finally, a place to call his own! The Yellow House needed to be somewhere where artists felt at home. Vincent got straight to work! He bought beds and chairs, all paid for by Theo. Vincent painted in between times, sometimes working nights on end and even for 12 hours at a time. ‘I hope that your efforts will succeed in making your house a place where artists will feel at home’, wrote Theo.

When Theo van Gogh died, his widow Jo van Gogh-Bonger was left with their one-year-old son, 350 paintings and 550 drawings by Vincent van Gogh. She decided that it was her job to spread the word of Vincent’s art. For example, by selling it specifically to museums and collectors, such as Helene Kröller-Müller.
