After a late start to the winter down here in the southern Cape, the chill and rain has certainly arrived in a big way. That said, today was a fine day out at the farm with plenty of sunshine and mild temps. It’s always a treat to pot about and chat to customers who braved the slightly washed away road to visit, shop and enjoy the peace and quiet of the farm. The Fiesta Red nectarine is currently in blossom, and will soon be followed by the other deciduous trees in stock. Can’t wait!

We shared organic naartjies at @redbarnfreerange today - the joy of having surplus produce from one’s garden.

Once again it feels like Spring is in the air … and the figs seem to agree. (Winter is forecast to make a dramatic return in the Cape on Monday.)

Potager is running a special on two-to-three-year-old (20 litre) deciduous trees in the southern Cape this month. It's the perfect time to be planting any tree. The buds of these beauties are about to burst and, in no time at all, they'll be covered in blossom, followed by fresh foliage. And then they'll start the miracle of producing fruit. Yum!

Everything's good about where Potager's based ... the people, the chickens, the worms ... I've not yet met Sherm and Shelby but I've met their magnificent off-spring and they've done rather well making black gold. Worms for the Win!

Potager’s Kitchen: Our lovely old orange and naartjie trees are full of fruit. As the fruit is completely organic, I happily use their peels without worrying what’s ‘on’ them.

Every year I prep a few bottles of what I call ’Van der Naartjie’ liqueur so that it will be ready to enjoy or gift in the festive season. It’s really easy: peel your naartjies - as many as you feel you need (I use five or six for a large batch of 1.5 litres). Eat the juicy flesh. Yum! Then place the peels in a large jar filled with brandy. Leave to brew for a few weeks, and shake up the mix every so often until the oils from the skins fully infuse the alcohol. Then remove the skins, add two cups of sugar (or more/less to taste) and stir until the crystals are dissolved. Store in bottles and enjoy.

Proper Van der Hum recipes include spices such as cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and also a little rum. However I find that homegrown naartjie skins flavour the brandy so beautifully that the added spices are quite unnecessary. Naartjie brandy is also delicious when added to a hot toddy.

Now I’m off to go peel lemons to make limoncello with a vodka base …

There are four hens in this pic. Four! What is it about laying boxes and the gals all wanting to be in this ONE at the same time when there’s another perfectly cosy one right next door?

Doing Waste in a Whole Different Way as Organic Waste Ban Looms

In six months the landfill ban of organic waste comes into effect in the Western Cape. What are your plans for handling your kitchen and garden waste in the future? If you'd like a Yolo tumbler, we can arrange it. Or perhaps you'd prefer a worm farm, or bokashi bucket. Ask and we'll supply. We also sell chippers and tools. Our prices are competitive, especially in an economy where we're all under pressure.

Doing Waste in a Whole Different Way as Organic Waste Ban Looms The Organics Recycling Association of South Africa take a look at the ways we can work with our organic waste before the landfill ban takes effect.

The unseasonably balmy and dry conditions have brought forth the first spring-not-spring flowers in the nursery … and this evening a proper winter storm has rolled in from the west. Much awaited rain!

Potager’s Hens: They have taken quite a few more months than expected but three out of Hen’s five hens have started to lay. These mixed-breed babies haven't matured as 'quickly' as the more commercial layers we’ve had in the past (Lohman Browns and Boschvelders). That’s ok - collecting one’s own home-laid eggs is just wonderful whenever they happen. And, as a friend suggested, the little pullet eggs are perfect for ‘little omelettes’ and ‘little quiches’. The hens also provide mesmerizing company when one wants to sit and contemplate them as they work the soil looking for goodies, and as they turn garden and kitchen waste into garden gold.

The laying box has been a bit of a challenge as we’ve tried upcycling various containers for them. And then a friend gave us a bright blue steel drum that previously contained macadamia nut oil. After a good clean, C cut three holes, added clip-on rubber trim to protect the hens (and us) and then installed it in the run. It is filled with untreated pine shavings and, ta da, the girls have a a roomy laying box in which they can do their amazing thing.

We’re all out of isolation tomorrow, parents are now recuperating and there is much relief all round. Thank you for your good wishes and thoughts. I can’t wait to get back to the farm to check on my leafy green lovies (my trees). That’s tomorrow ... today I had a scavenge around my winter garden. It’s certainly not looking its best, partly due to the season (and wind and unseasonal dryness) but mainly because of the amount of time I’m putting into the business. Anyhow, as most gardens happily ignore our human limitations, I was blessed to find these gems: Italian parsley, rosemary, tarragon and chilli. I made a green pesto for our communal Sunday roast. Comfort food deluxe!

It’s cold and blustery here right now, and we’re still in isolation. I’ve doing some sorting and I was so pleased to re-discover this little gem from my grandfather Fred’s book collection. It's a Rigby Instant Book and it’s a rather timeous treasure to find as next week I plan attend to my espalier, maintain the trees that we planted last season, and the new ones we’re planning to plant soon. I need to train, prune (where applicable), mulch and feed so that the orchard is ready to burst into flower and reward us with fruit in the warmer months.

Potager’s kitchen: We have Covid in the house and so I’ve been preparing carrot-ginger-orange shots each day. While we had to buy in the carrots and ginger (ahem), the addition of whole organic oranges off our beautiful old tree has certainly zinged up the concoction. Yummy goodness.

The garden is proving to be a special place to take in some winter rays and enjoy fresh air as we ride this thing. It may not be getting any tending right now but gardens are good that way - they often give us way more than they get from us. Now for everyone to get better.

Keep safe out there!

Happy Winter Solstice! Today we have galeforce (or pretty close to galeforce) berg winds. It’s warm and it’s dusty and these conditions are quite common in winter in the southern Cape. My oranges are clinging on for dear life - many have already fallen #marmalade. I’m glad I’m not a commercial fruit farmer right now - this wind is brutal for buds and leaves.

Look! A gift just found on a young lemon tree: an egg sac or ootheca of one of our resident praying mantises. The tree is safely put aside until the babies (nymphs) hatch in spring and we can welcome more bug predators to our garden.

Potager: [noun] A kitchen garden.

Can there be anything better than harvesting vegetables, herbs and fruits from your own garden space of whatever size you are fortunate to own or rent? Goodness, recreation, sustainability, self-sufficiency, economy, wholesomeness - who needs a reason to get growing food? Start with what you enjoy eating, and take it from there.
