Say no to poison.

There is no such thing as "Eco-friendly" poison. What killed the rat will kill whatever eats the rat unfortunately.

This is why the Barn Owl (Tyto alba) is such a good species to have for conservation because a family of 5 Barnies can eat on average around 3500 mice and rats in a single year.

Its important to note that when an owl is on your roof, it is not because someone in your family is going to die. It is not because a sangoma put a spell on your family. The owl is merely using your roof as a height advantage to scout for food.

Ensuring your garden is kept neat of rubble, rubbish and debris, your chances of attracting mice and rats will be reduced as well as the chances of an owl or snake visiting your property.

New admission

This young Black Eagle (Aquila verreauxii) came to us yesterday when it was seen on the road in Loxton, Western Cape.

It will be a long rehabilitation process to get this eagle to fly and hunt successfully and sufficiently on its own, but we aim to do it as quickly and effectively as is possible.

The colours on this boy are absolutely amazing. In around 7 years he will be more completely black and white than the current "crowned eagle" look he is going for. πŸ¦…πŸ˜

*The hood keeps him calm so that we can work with him

We love what we do but cannot do it without the help of donations from the public.

This past weekend was a busy weekend regarding owls that have been spotted 'injured' or grounded.

We are approaching owlet season so the babies will most likely be on the ground being fed by the parents. Unless they are in imminent danger from humans, dogs or anything else, it is best to leave them be.

Serious injured can be caused to anyone who wishes to catch these babies themselves by either the babies themselves or from the parents. These babies have "K-shaped" toes which allow them to grab onto the bark of a tree and by flapping their wings, they can crawl back up into a tree to get out of dangers way.

If you happen to spot an owl or owlet on the ground, please ensure that a photo can be taken safely and get in contact with your nearest rehab centre. They will advise otherwise on the best course of action.

Owl boxes for Spotted Eagle owls , Barn Owls and African Wood owls available at our centre- get in touch πŸ¦‰

*Not for sensitive viewers*- dead bird post.

This Black Sparrowhawk (Accipitor melanoleucus) was collected on Monday and brought into the centre with skin lesions to his face and feet. Upon closer inspection, it was found that he had in fact been suffering from a mite infection under his skin and what looks like to be bruising under his right wing on his abdomen. By looking at the coloration to his feathers, it can be said that he was a second-year bird.

β€œKnemidokoptes mites are subcutaneous mites that are found in the skin of the face, legs or body of avian hosts, the symptoms of which can range from feather loss and skin lesions to beak deformities.

Although known to infect multiple species of Passeriform birds (birds that are regarded as perching or songbirds due to the arrangement of their toes), very few cases have ever been reported in birds of prey.

An unusually high number of Black Sparrowhawks of the Cape Peninsula were identified as being affected by these mites, with obvious symptoms such as baldness and leg lesions. This is the first record of a possible epizootic event caused by Knemidokoptic mites in a wild population of a bird of prey…The infections affect on individual fitness was explored and it has been found that it had a significant negative effect on breeding success and productivity...These results therefore suggest that this infection has the potential to affect the stability of this population over time, due to its effect on reproductive success. Although this species is not endangered, this possible epizootic event is of interest to the study of bird-parasite systems, specifically how this study ectoparasite can negatively affect the fitness of their hosts.”

New admission

I struggle to find words to express my deepest sadness and anger at some humans. πŸ’”

This Forest Buzzard was brought in to us when it was found running along the side of the road.

The first thing that comes to mind when you are told a bird was seen running along the road is BROKEN WING(S)?

Here is where it gets complicated. See this bird is a healthy, feisty bird. The only thing wrong with it, is its feathers are missing. 😳😠

It barely has primary and secondary feathers on its wings but in the first photo, you can see where my hand is holding onto feathers, that is where his beautiful tail feathers should be. They were cut about a cm from his skin.

This stunning boy will have to be with us for a very long time as we wait for him to molt out his feathers and push out brand new ones. Only then can he be released. 😭

We love what we do but without the help from the public we cant continue our fight to save the raptors.

A sad outcome but a must read! πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™

On Saturday the 22nd of May, these 4 Barn Owlets were brought to us.

Unfortunately, they were hand reared, which resulted in two having to be euthanized due to the severity of their deformities. The deformities that were seen were the wings not being straight as a normal owl's wing should be, as well as skew legs. These deformities are the result of an incorrect diet with little to no calcium.

We urge those who come across any baby bird, to PLEASE follow the little diagram provided for the best outcome for our little feathered friends. Often when babies are on the ground- in the case of Spotted Eagle Owls, mom or dad is still feeding the baby and the baby is just curious, busy exploring the area.

We know they often look cuddly and adorable, and we know that people often only have the best intentions when it comes to helping the sick, weak and baby animals. HOWEVER, please do NOT go search how to raise them, as google often has wrong information telling you to feed birds dog hair or cotton balls to help them cast. This is wrong! The only way to ensure a positive outcome for our wildlife is to leave it to the professionals.
