Auto-Assessments

Deadlines for 2022 tax season opening 1 July.
24 October - Taxpayer excluding provisional taxpayer
23 January - Provisional Taxpayers
Auto Assessments - 40 working days after opening (thus 26 August)

SARS will issue auto-assessments again this year to a large number of taxpayers, using data that they have received from 3rd parties, such as employers, financial institutions, medical schemes and retirement fund administrators. You should receive a notification by SMS from SARS at the beginning of the tax season if you have been auto-assessed.

Previously, you had to ‘accept’ the auto-assessment, or ‘edit’ to reject it and file your tax return. This year, SARS have said that if you are in agreement with the auto-assessment, no action is required. If you are not in agreement with the assessment, you can access your tax return eFiling, complete the return, and file it.

If you are unsure of your auto assessment, pleas contact your friendly tax practitioner.

A lovely little girl was holding two apples with both hands. Her mum came in and softly asked her little daughter with a smile: my sweetie, could you give your mum one of your two apples? The girl looked up at her mum for some seconds, then she suddenly took a quick bite on one apple, and then quickly on the other.

The mum felt the smile on her face freeze. She tried hard not to reveal her disappointment.

Then the little girl handed one of her bitten apples to her mum, and said: mummy, here you are. This is the sweeter one.

No matter who you are, how experienced you are, and how knowledgeable you think you are, always delay judgement. Give others the privilege to explain themselves. What you see may not be the reality.
