Today, 27 years ago, South Africa held its first democratic elections on 27 April 1994.

We remember and celebrate our heroes, who through their sacrifice achieved the freedoms we enjoy today. We also recognise our responsibility to not only protect our freedom, but the freedom of others.

Happy #FreedomDay South Africa! 🇿🇦

#GBCSACaseStudy | A closer look at the 35 Lower Long Building in Cape Town that achieved a 4-Star Design Office v1.1 rating.

The building, situated on De Waterkant, incorporated several sustainability features, including a high-performance double-glazed specification with increased internal cill height raised to desk height - to reduce both solar gain and radiant heat which significantly lowered HVAC requirements.

House Howard, Rondebosch

The place was a Tudor delight; very old and dark. Heritage and I (coz I also live in a Tudor) wanted to restore it as authentically as possible but Mom had other ideas…

The visitor’s entrance sequence was restored to a classical access path on one side of the north facing games lawn with service entrance via the new garage. The Entrance hall was pushed out and the new front door was set within a glazed frame to create a more generous light filled hall. The kitchen was modernized and opened up to incorporate the snug TV lounge. The old formal lounge was revived through opening it up to the new entrance hall and restoring the old hearth, illuminating it with discreet new skylights on either side of the chimney breast.

Fossil fuels are set to dominate Africa’s energy mix UNLESS ACTION is taken to shake up the way renewables projects are developed and financed, according to a new study.

Although some countries on the continent, such as Egypt, Kenya and South Africa, have begun to lay the ground for increasing the share of renewables on the grid, the disparity between other African countries and developed nations is stark. As of 2020, the UK is home to more solar power capacity than the entire sun-baked continent of Africa.

There have been a range of obstacles on the continent, from political interests to lack of infrastructure.

“For our smart cities research, we will be working with a team of academics including social and environmental scientists, economists, urban planners, architects and lawyers. We need to redesign and integrate living spaces to promote social cohesion. We need to restructure urban planning so that people can live closer to work, reduce travel expenses, take the pressure off roads and lead more affordable, environmentally conscious lives.”

Prof Mark Swilling launched his new book, The Age of Sustainability: Just Transitions in a Complex World. The book provides an interpretation of the global economic and ecological crisis from a distinct African perspective and examines how we understand the underlying dynamics of the transitions that are unfolding. Without this understanding, we enter the future in a state of informed bewilderment. The book refers quite a bit to the Lynedoch Eco-Village, and ends off with a reflection on our learning practice.

House Efsthatiou, Bishopscourt

House Efstathiou suffered from dated planning and space flow and was disconnected from its pool.

The dark and pokey entrance sequence was opened up to create a new hallway and guest suite. The old terrace stair down to the pool tucked in under the wide eaves was internalized with a new curved glass screen – flooding the playroom below and study above with light.
The kitchen was modernized and the living areas were cleared of internal walls to open up the space and flow onto the newly built deep covered veranda terrace; wide enough to accommodate an outdoor dining and lounging area, complete with fireplace and sliding louvered screens all round. From here the views over the pool and cascading gardens lift to the amazing mountain views typical of the Bishopscourt area.
