Garden Route (South Africa) Lockdown

For once humans are caged, and nature is free.
Before boredom may sets in and you want to dissect your spouse. Step out into our yard/garden and inspect for every plant for some or other critter that may be lurking there.
You may surprise yourself and add a species or 10 to your life list.

Include birds as well. We always look at that dove on the fence, or gecko on the wall and think “just another one”.
Now is the time that we document all these “common” creatures for future history.
Keep well within the legal regulations and be safe.

Good morning to everyone
.
Thanks to a little thing called COVID-19 we will have to postpone all workshops and training sessions. We will keep you posted as things go along.

There is however no need to stop yourself from learning the ropes.
* Please feel free to send us your email address, or Whatsapp number and we can pass on training material to you.
* Youtube has numerous videos as well on how to do things.
The iNaturalist web site, under help also has lots of information.
* Or contact us to assist.

In the mean time. Log into iNaturalist, and play around online. No harm in that. Get yourself acquainted and start to practice.
Walk around your house and take pics of all critters, or birds you see and upload.

Be safe, and have fun.
The clock is ticking towards the City Nature Challenge.
45 Days to go!

This is your chance to show the rest of the world why we call this area the Garden Route.
Have you downloaded your app, and started to practice? It is free, fun and educational.

Pop us a message if you have any questions or follow our iNaturalist project page for updates on training sessions in your area.
https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2020-garden-route
I have a backlog of photographs to upload on iNaturalist, will it count if I add them during the time of the challenge? or is the challenge limited to observations made during the the challenge? 🌿🐝🌷

City Nature Challenge: Garden Route. Proudly participating in the City Nature Challenge (CNC). The next CNC will be in April 2022. Be part of the fun to show off the Garden Route and learn more about the environment around you.

The weekend is over.
Now to upload all those observations you took. You have until 09 May 21 to upload all your observations. Get it in early so that identifications can be made.

[05/03/21]   Multiple observations in one post. Please no.

Please make sure that you only upload one species per observation.

There are numerous observations with multiple species in it. These must be split into individual observations.
If you suspect you may have done it, please go and check. If you need assistance in correcting it leave a comment on this post and we will assist you.

So, if you have 3 photos of plant A, and another 2 of plant B, One observation contains the first 3 photos. And the next observation the second 2 photos.

If you add multiple species to one observation it makes it impossible to add an identification. Thus you will never get a answer to your question.

How is the Garden Route CNC faring?
Currently the GR is 20th place world wide in observation, and 10th position for species. Considering that there are more than 450 places taking part not to shabby.
And in Southern Africa the GR is 2nd position for both observations and species.

City Nature Challenge 2021: Garden Route

This is the weekend for you to put your photo taking skills to the test.
No observation is unwanted (other than pets, boyfriends etc). Everything nature welcome.

* Get to bed early to rise early! (Next opportunity to sleep will be 10 May)
* Send the children to friends. Or better yet, get the children and friends (and husband if you want him around) in on the action.
* If your camera/phone is GPS enabled, make sure it is on.
* Vehicle charges for cell phones, and spare batteries packed. No excuses!
* Make sure you have data aplenty.
* If using a cell phone for observations make sure that the observation is uploaded and synchronized before logging out. Otherwise, it just shows as a blank.
* Plan your excursions for the 4 days. Do not wait to wake up in the morning to decide over a coffee where to go. Have the coffee packed in your vehicle and drink a cuppa with the sunrise in the field.
* Remember to pack padkos. You do not want any excuse to return home earlier than after dark.

---- 04 May 2021 to 09 May 2021 ----
This is your time to upload your observations and do identifications.
Remember: If you do not know what it is, do not stress. Someone will come along and ID it for you. Just get the observations loaded.
NB: Plan for and around Eskom

---- 10 May 2020 ----
Plan and put in a day leave so you can sleep.

---- 11 May to CNC 2021 -----
Keep up the good work and carry-on observing things around you.

---- 2022 ----
Start all over again.

Follow the fun on Facebook and the relevant projects to track the progress.

City Nature Challenge 2021: Garden Route

1 Day to the start of the City Nature Challenge. (less, as it starts at 00h00 tonight) The clock is ticking.

Are your camera batteries charged? Have you planned your trips and outings? Your spouse and children are all welcome to take part. So, include everyone in your trips. They may spot something you do not.

Throughout the day things change, so always have your camera handy.

That wood pile could also harbour an insect or 3. So plan to repack it.
Get some fresh air and visit your urban parks. Who knows what you will find.

Enjoy, and be safe

City Nature Challenge 2021: Garden Route

Tips for uploading observations over the City Nature Challenge period.

Some tips and common mistakes made while uploading observations.

• M̲u̲l̲t̲i̲p̲l̲e̲ ̲s̲p̲e̲c̲i̲e̲s̲ ̲i̲n̲ ̲o̲n̲e̲ ̲o̲b̲s̲e̲r̲v̲a̲t̲i̲o̲n̲:̲ ̲You may have taken several observations and now want to upload. One observation is for one species. So, if you have a plant, and insect, and another plant, please make sure that they are in different observations. You will not get a positive identification as other users will ignore it because it contains multiple species. Also, where you could have had several observations to your count, you now only have one.
• M̲u̲l̲t̲i̲p̲l̲e̲ ̲p̲h̲o̲t̲o̲s̲ ̲o̲f̲ ̲o̲n̲e̲ ̲s̲p̲e̲c̲i̲e̲s̲ ̲a̲t̲ ̲o̲n̲e̲ ̲s̲i̲g̲h̲t̲i̲n̲g̲:̲ You may have taken several different photos of a plant to show the leaf, growth form, flower, or seed. Make sure that all these are in one observation. Do not save them individually. This would result in one observation, now becoming many, and clutters the system forcing you to delete and combine.
• S̲a̲m̲e̲ ̲s̲p̲e̲c̲i̲e̲s̲,̲ ̲d̲i̲f̲f̲e̲r̲e̲n̲t̲ ̲l̲o̲c̲a̲t̲i̲o̲n̲s̲:̲ If you take a photo of a plant at one site, drive a kilometre on, and take another photo of the same plant, that will count as two observations. Thus, two separate instances.
• A̲p̲p̲ ̲s̲y̲n̲c̲h̲r̲o̲n̲i̲z̲a̲t̲i̲o̲n̲:̲ ̲Make sure that when you use the App on your cell that you allow it to fully synchronize before logging out. It could result in the system registering the observation, but without a photo it is not verifiable and will not be counted as it does not have a photo.
• A̲u̲d̲i̲o̲ ̲c̲l̲i̲p̲s̲ Do remember that audio clips are also acceptable, so if you got frogs clicking or croaking in a pond, or a bird chirping in a tree you may upload that audio clip as well – MP3 format.
• L̲i̲m̲i̲t̲ ̲u̲p̲l̲o̲a̲d̲ ̲b̲a̲t̲c̲h̲ ̲n̲u̲m̲b̲e̲r̲s: Upload small batches of observations at a time. The iNaturalist system will be under pressure and loading a large batch may cause your system to hang, resulting in you having to start again. Suggest ten observations at a time, save, then the next.
• N̲a̲m̲i̲n̲g̲ ̲y̲o̲u̲r̲ ̲o̲b̲s̲e̲r̲v̲a̲t̲i̲o̲n̲:̲ If you upload something and have no idea what it is. Do not leave the name blank. Identify it into the main groupings, e.g., Plants, Birds, Insects, Mammals or Fungi. This will help those trolling the observations to pick them up and add an identification. Leaving it blank could result in it getting lost and only being discovered once it is quieter and too late.
• S̲e̲l̲e̲c̲t̲i̲n̲g̲ ̲c̲o̲m̲p̲u̲t̲e̲r̲ ̲n̲a̲m̲e̲:̲ Do not always accept the name suggested by the site, unless you are sure it is that. If you are unsure, rather put into a higher grouping and let others that know name it. So, you upload a spider, and the system suggest some weird name. You do know it is a spider, so rather enter it as such. The name the system suggests may be from a different continent.
• N̲a̲m̲e̲ ̲r̲e̲g̲i̲s̲t̲r̲a̲t̲i̲o̲n̲ ̲o̲n̲ ̲o̲b̲s̲e̲r̲v̲a̲t̲i̲o̲n̲:̲ When you enter the name of your observation. Wait for the system to give you a drop-down list which should include what you entered. Select from the list to register the name.
• P̲h̲o̲t̲o̲ ̲c̲l̲a̲r̲i̲t̲y̲:̲ Make sure that your photo is identifiable. If you can not see the bird or insect, neither can the other users.

How many observations can you upload? This will depend on how many hours you have in the day. No number is to few, but the more the better.
