This is a honey bee. The pollen on her legs is from dandelions. Her tongue is sticking out due to what killed her that was on the dandelions.
It’s spring, dandelions are the bees first food. This bee is dead from w**d killer spread on what we see as w**ds, but what nature sees as food. Please don’t spray for w**ds until you see the blackberries blooming. In this area, w**ds, flowers and fruit trees are bees only source of food until middle of June. There are FAR more w**ds than flowers or fruit trees, so it's their only food source. No bees, no food crops for us and we all starve.

🍯 Honey instead of sugar!

Honey provides a wonderful flavour when used as a substitute for sugar in tea and coffee, but what, if any, are the benefits besides the flavour?

Refined sugar is produced from sugar cane, which is cultivated mainly in tropical areas. The environmental impacts of sugar cane production include loss of natural habitat, intense use of water, heavy use of agro- chemicals which cause pollution by runoff as well as air pollution. Transport, shipping and packaging all contribute to a large carbon footprint and environmental impact due to the demand for refined sugar.

Honey is naturally produced by honeybees in the wild, and the process of honey "cultivation" by small-scale beekeepers is a mutualistic relationship between the bees and humans - the happier the bees are, the better the beekeepers do. The bees are tended to, their hives maintained, they are put in areas with plenty of food and water available and the beekeepers do all they can to prevent disease, pests and predators bothering them. The environment is benefitted by pollination services provided by the bees 🐝 🌻🌼🏵

Honey is comprised of fructose (40%), glucose (30%), water, carbohydrates and various minerals (iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium), whereas sugar is 100% carbohydrate. Honey is sweeter than table sugar due to the high level of fructose, and has a higher calorie level, but a lower GI value which means it does not raise blood sugar levels as quickly. For diabetics, there is no benefit to using honey instead of sugar as both will raise blood sugar levels.

A lot of people call me a w**d but I'm a friend and come to help you!
When you see me, remember that I'm the ONLY one who wants and can grow in that particular spot.
Because:
Either the soil is too compact/hard / stomped and I want to loosen it for you with my roots.
Or there is too little calcium in the soil - don't worry, I will replenish that for you with the dying of my leaves.
Or the soil is too acidic. But I will also improve that for you if you give me the chance.
Or a mixture of the above reasons, of course 😊
I'm here because your soil needs my help so best you let me grow without disturbing me! When everything is fixed, I will disappear again, I promise!
Are you trying to remove me prematurely with my root? However meticulous you are, I will return 2x as strong! Just until your soil is improved.
You can even tell by my growth at which stage my help is at. If my leaves are flat on the ground then I'm far from ready but if they all reach up then I'm already a long way on my way.
Something completely different is that I am 1 of the first bloomers in spring so I will announce spring/summer for you.
During the day when it's hot, I open my flowers but in the evening when it cools off I close them again quickly. In fact, if it's not hot enough during the day I won't open them at all!
My flowers are some of the first food for insects after hibernation and unlike most other plants, I have pollen AND nectar, not merely one OR the other! And I am generous with them! 🤪😉
My flowers are even delicious for you people by the way, did you know? I used to be called ′′honey (or gold) of the poor′′ because my flowers are so sweet in e.g. jam, sauce or salad!
But wait until the end of May or later before you start picking and even then, don't pick everything yet! The biodiversity and bees will be very grateful!
Have a dandy day 🍯🐝💛🤍

The worker bee 🐝
~
The worker bee is usually the type of bee we see outside the hive, they are smaller in size than the drone bees and queen bees. 🐝
~
~
~
They are always female and have many jobs around the hive, she will have a few jobs depending on how old she is, such as feeding the larvae and young drones.
~
~
~
Some workers are responsible for making honeycomb, storing and making honey!
~
~
~
Older bees go collecting pollen and foraging for nectar for their honey. Worker bees play a very important role 🐝💛🤍

DON'T MOW, LET IT GROW! 🌿🌳🌾

‘Grow, don’t mow’ spring flowers!
🌿

As winter comes to a close, the warmer weather creates a favourable climate for spring flowers to start blooming. The City is giving residents an opportunity to weigh in on the great mowing debate.
🌿

Cape Town lies within the greater Cape Floral Region in which the rare Fynbos and Renosterveld vegetation groups can be found. This is recognised as one of the most special places in the world because of its plant species.
🌿

Fynbos Biome has the highest concentration of plant species in the world, estimated at approximately 9 500 species, 70% of which grow nowhere else on earth. The City has ensured that areas rich in this vegetation are protected and currently maintains 17 nature reserves and various conservation sites.
🌿

Unfortunately, protected sites represent a small percentage of the area where fynbos is found across the city.
🌿

To advance conservation efforts, the City has adopted a ‘No Mowing Policy’ for specific sites during the growing season which starts in July/August and ends in November annually.
🌿

Mowing is suspended during this period at identified Public Open Spaces, greenbelts and road verges that contain remnants of the critically endangered vegetation and areas of high prevalence of biodiversity. This allows for annuals, perennials and geophytes to flower, mature and seed during spring.
🌿

‘When left undisturbed, these ordinarily plain stretches of grass and sand become brightly colourful, blooming small flowers.
🌿

There is great focus being placed on educating internal and contractor staff to be sensitised to the requests from residents in order to limit the risk of accidental mowing.
🌿

Residents are encouraged to submit applications for the City to avoid mowing grass in a certain park in their area in writing to [email protected].
🌿

However, it is important that the letter is supported by the local community and that there is consensus between the neighbours who will see uneven grass and spurts of growth left unattended to facilitate the growth of the flowers.'

🛠 TOOLS OF THE TRADE 💨

Part 3/3
Bee Suit 👖🥾

Beekeepers may be very skilled... but a suit is essential in keeping bees, they are generally made with thick fabric, such as denim and are worn over your normal clothes to provide a strong layer of protection from the bees. The mesh veil is very important, protecting your face and neck while allowing you to see what you're doing. Last but not least, a good pair of strong leather gloves and boots to provide coverage over ankles, so one is well protected 🛡📍

🛠 TOOLS OF THE TRADE 💨

Part 2/3
HIVE TOOL 🛠

🐝 The Hive tool is another essential piece of equipment and is used to open up hives by prying apart the different Hive components, and to remove the frames during inspections, scratching off propolis and wax 🐝🐝

25/10/2021

🛠 TOOLS OF THE TRADE 💨

Part 1/3
Smoker 💨

🐝 Smoking has been done for centuries, only in the late 1800's did we create a specialized tool to create smoke for Beekeeping. Bee smokers work by filling the chamber with flammable material such as herbs, wood and cardboard, then setting it alight and pumping a bellows in order to create smoke. It's not completely clear as to why this calms the bees, but a theory is that smoke masks the smell of danger pheromone that they release when their hive is disturbed 💨🐝
