The heritage and heart-space of a culture and community can be shared dynamically through art and storytelling. The large collection of cartoon-like creatures created by artist Phillip Rikhotso takes us on a whimsical journey through the artist's colorful mind, a fantasy world of characters and imaginary places, deeply rooted in African folklore and inspired by his Tsonga heritage.
Visitors to the exhibition can expect to be involved in an active, creative process of storytelling...Take a walk through a labyrinth of mirrors and where you become part of the Tsonga Tales told through the fabulous fantasy figures of Phillip Rikhotso. Weaving in and out of a hall of mirrors and a wall of screens, these colourful characters come alive and tell their unique stories with you as their accomplice or friend. Out in the gardens, ablaze with the hues of Spring, gather around the storytellers to hear the folklore and myths that these wild and wonderful creatures have to share.
Garingani wa Garingani…..you’ll hear about the treacherous hadedas a long long time ago. Don’t ignore the jealous mother-in-law or the wild and wonderful horned creatures with buck teeth… they will enchant you with their tales. This is not a stale and passive experience of viewing art behind a dusty glass case, it is a celebration of the stories that wind their way through the generations, connecting us all.
Garingani wa Garingani interactive Art Exhibition will take place on 24 and 25 September 2022 at the Cheerio Gardens Events Venue.

It’s almost Spring.. time for friends, family and fun! But just as quickly as it began, the long weekend is over and the work deadlines are looming.
Take a long, deep breath and visualize a calm and beautiful place where you can unclench your shoulders and feel your body unwind. This fantasy is closer than you think... just a few hours drive, heading north to Limpopo, Shiluvari Lakeside Lodge is hidden away in the banks of the Albassini Dam encircled by distant mountains.
You can laze on the loungers after a dip in the pool, step up for a sunset cruise across the welcoming waters of the Albassini Dam, sip sundowners on the cool, wide stoep and delight in the serenity.
Shiluvari has a distinctive Shangaan vibe going on from the colourful, funky furniture to the art from the area. Chill out at Shiluvari or hike, bike, bird and explore the Soutpansberg mountains or the incredible art and craft on the nearby Ribola Art Route.

Amorous Maswanganyi has a big smile to match his generous heart. This talented young artist captures in wood, the cultural issues erupting from the space where modern and traditional South Africa meet. A social commentator in corkwood and paint….quirky and whimsical, playful and hopeful. Amorous, a youthful observer of life in all its tumult and turbulence, beauty and bafflement, carries the stories of teenage pregnancy and youthful crimes into the wood.
A colourful, quirky vessel for his message, his characters have a voice, a personality, a presence. The Doctor and the overworked nurse, the shy pregnant school girl and her best friend there to support her, it all comes together to tell a unique story. Amorous, through his innocent eyes, has become a voice for his generation and a commentator on the world that is constantly shaping us.
Experience life through the eyes of the Ribola Art Route artists, crafters and musicians. Come closer and fall in love.💕

This trio of sculptures by Noria Mabasa are currently being shown as part of the Norval Foundation’s ‘When Rain Clouds Gather: Black South African Women Artists, 1940 - 2000’ exhibition. Originally motivated by enigmatic dreams in which an ancestral elder woman spoke with her, Mabasa turned to clay and wood in the 1970’s as her chosen mediums. The aforementioned materials were, at the time, the preserve of male sculptors. In work that combines both figurative and functional languages, Mabasa often speaks to themes of Venda mythology, spirituality, and the realities of the lived experience that are so tenderly ingrained into the exhibition.
