Life in Australia vs the UK: A Comprehensive Guide for Expats 15/05/2026

Do you want to know more about life in Australia vs the UK?

If you’re considering a move from the UK to Australia, like I did back in 2013, you’re likely weighing up the pros and cons of life in each country. Or you might be weighing up a move from South Africa to the UK or Australia – both popular destinations for South Africans wanting to move overseas.

Both Australia and the UK offer a high quality of life but in very different ways. In this post, I’ll compare and contrast the key factors of each country to help you understand what your life might look like in Australia if you’re thinking of moving from the UK.

I have a bit of a unique perspective on this, as not only have I lived in the UK and Australia, but South Africa as well. With South Africa being my country of birth, I’m able to see the pros and cons for the UK and Australia, without being biased towards either one due to my inner patriotism (Bokke forever!).

Getting Used to the Australian Way of Doing Things 📝

Australia is beautiful, but it comes with a learning curve you can’t skip.

From government systems to work culture, everyday life, friendships, and even schools, everything has its own rules. And most of the time, those rules are… unspoken.

Some examples I can think of are:

• Workplaces may be casual in style but still expect results (and long hours)
• Schools have different systems and parent expectations
• Friendships can form slowly — sometimes painfully slowly
• Government processes often take longer than you expect (although still quicker than South Africa 😜)

At first, you’ll feel like you’re always catching up. You’ll second-guess yourself. You’ll wonder if you’ll ever feel “normal” here.

And then, slowly, it clicks. You start understanding the rhythm. You feel confident navigating the systems. You find your tribe. The chaos fades, replaced by routine and comfort.

It takes time. Be patient. This is normal.

You’re adjusting, learning, and building a life here 🌱

How Your First 5 Years in Australia Might Feel 🗓️

The first five years after moving? Expect a rollercoaster. 🎢

Year 1: Survival mode. Everything is new, overwhelming, and exhausting. You’re focused on logistics, stability, and basic routines.

Year 2: Slight breathing room. You understand more but feel the emotional weight of leaving home.

Year 3: Confidence starts to build. You know how things work, and life feels less chaotic.

Year 4: Routines settle. Friendships deepen. Work feels more stable. You start planning for the long-term.

Year 5: Grounded. You start feeling at home. Life here feels real. Australia is home, even if you’ll always carry pieces of your old life.

Five years is a guideline, not a rule. Everyone’s journey is unique.

But most people notice by year five that they’ve built a life here, stronger and more resilient than they imagined 🥰

The Hard Part Doesn’t Last Forever 🌱

When you’re deep in the migrant struggle, it can feel endless.

Paperwork. Homesickness. The constant mental load.

But here’s a truth that takes a while to believe: it doesn’t last forever.

You will eventually:

🔍Know how systems work without Googling everything
🤯Stop stressing about every little social cue
💪 Feel calmer, lighter, and more confident in your life

It’s not instant. It’s not linear. Some weeks feel amazing. Some months feel impossible.

The turning points are subtle. Maybe it’s laughing with a new friend. Or watching your kids adapt faster than you imagined. Or finally knowing the quickest route to the shops without checking Google Maps.

If today feels heavy, hold on.

One day, you’ll wake up and realise you’re thriving. Slowly, quietly, your hard part is loosening its grip.
