🎀 My cancer "Warrior"-journey 🎀

Hi, my name is Desre. I am 25 years old and I am currently walking a path in my life that was not part of my plans. I am still young and have always been very healthy. I didn't think cancer was in the cards for me, but then it happened to me.

You will see that the word cancer is not capitalized in the main heading because I'd rather give the "power" for the word "Warrior".

Here is my story ~

In May 2022 I started feeling a k**b in my left breast. I made an appointment with my GP and after a sonar it was determined to be a non-malignant tumor. Around October 2022 the same breast started to feel different together with another k**b and some other symptoms such as acne, rashes etc. I thought it could be due to hormonal imbalance. The first gynaecologist was only available in February 2023.

Upon my visit with the gynae in Feb 2023, she insisted on an appointment with radiology. The next day at my appointment, the doctor was very worried with what he saw. The doctor insisted to do a biopsy immediately. With the results received by Friday, the doctor insisted on more tests. The Monday morning after, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

The same week I was booked for an operation to insert a port as I will be undergoing chemotherapy. I went for my first chemo session the next day.

One cannot phantom the mixed emotions to experience when you get diagnosed with a life-threatening disease. It is something you can literally never imagine. All the information coming your way is overwhelming and to take it all in at once can leave you feeling like an empty shell. It is an emotional, but yet encouraging journey. I am blessed with so many caring and loving family and friends.

In total I had to undergo 16 sessions of chemotherapy for a duration of 3-4 hours each over the course of 6 months. My hair started to fall out by the 3rd session and I had realize when I stare at myself in the mirror that I am more than just a woman who dresses well, with beautiful eyes and a bush of beautiful hair. I had to learn to live with many emotions and to love myself for me.

After every chemotherapy session I experienced some side effects. I learned things about my own body that I never thought I'd had to. I have had the best support from family and friends and other lovely patients at Eden Oncology in George during my chemotherapy sessions, as well as the support of doctors and nurses.

I still worked and enjoyed weekends. Friends and family shaved off or sprayed their hair pink to support me as well as a fundraising was held to raise funds for all my out of hospital bills. Today when I look back, I realize that everything happens exactly as it should and that the Lord puts people in your path for a reason. I am truly blessed with the support of everyone in my life.

My last chemo session was the 10th Jul 2023.

August 2023 I underwent a double mastectomy operation at MediClinic, George. We had tests done in America earlier in the year which indicated that I am positive for the "BRCA2 cancer gene". Hence the double mastectomy. The chances were high that I would later get cancer in my right breast as well. I have a high risk of 5 types of cancers for the rest of my life.

The plastic surgeon, Dr. Verster, started reconstruction right after the mastectomies. I have expanders in both breast pockets at the moment and undergo for saline injections every 2 weeks to stretch my skin enough for implants.

The accident did hit me further because somehow in the hospital a spine cushion in my lower back was shaved. The gel leaked out and hardened around a nerve in my back, which caused me to be in terrible pain. After many tests, my neurosurgeon Dr Bezuidenhout performed a back operation on the 29th Sept 2023. I now wear a back brace and am still on the road to recovery.

As soon as my implant-surgery is done, the doctor will also cut out about 3 glands under my left arm to confirm microscopically that the cancer has not spread and that I am clear of cancer. This surgery is expected in December 2023.

I am not yet married nor do I have children. I will never be able to breastfeed. Chemo makes you sterile so I am injected once a month so I stay in menopause. Unfortunately, the injections also give side effects such as the well-known hot flashes. I also see an oncologist gynaecologist one of these days because I am at risk for "ovarian cancer" which means they will also want to take out my ovaries around the age of 30.

This journey has taught me that there are still good people on earth. I receive visits from our pastor and church-office calls regularly to follow up. My employer supports me. My parents are there for me every moment and I can't even describe how grateful I am for them. Friends drive me around when necessary and buy me beautiful gifts. Most in-hospital visits are covered by medical aid, however most other visits are paid out of pocket and the bills add up.

Meanwhile, I became an aunt this year and now, even more so, I fight to live for my nephew every day; he is one of the main reasons why I want to continue with this path that lies ahead of me. Thanks to the Lord, family and friends I am still standing. I still fight. I pray every day. The cliché that life is short is a reality for me these days. This road is hard but I know I will come out of this stronger!
