How is this for speed?

What speed will I get with my internet line?
First of all I would like to discuss how ISP's (Internet Service Providers) work.

Tereco is the data Centre here in Johannesburg. This is the main centre where from all ISP's get their internet connections. They will distrebute the internet from here, to your premises (home / business).

All connections are syncronous, which means that the speed up is the speed down. This solution is usually very expensive and gets broken down to smaller sized packages to make it more affordable. This is where we talk about CONTENTION.

CONTENTION means the following:
Lets say your ISP has a 10Mbps line which is syncronous, then they will under devide that line to certain amount of people. This affects your speed as well as your price youre getting it at. Telkom usually contend their lines between 50 - 100 people at their exchange. This means that you will be sharing whatever broadband package youre subscribed to with between 50 - 99 other people in your area. This is where you see contention as 1:50. This is why you wont get a 10Mbps if you subscribed to such a package. Unless you have a 1:1 contention package which means that you alone is on that package.

Contention is not usually discussed and ISP's will usually say that your speed is up to 10Mbps.

I will discuss in the next post how you can work out your speed according to your broadband package.

Although some of the information on this Linecast page might be very technical, I am trying to make things as easy as possible to understand. I have noticed that allot of people don't understand how internet speed works and what speed you should get when connecting to the internet. Even how fast a file will download and how long it will take. I will go into detail on this. Please let me know if you found the information beneficial and if you would like to know something.
